Deacon Lachlan
Last Sunday in Rome, Pope Francis canonized seven new saints. Among these seven were Pope Paul VI, who many of us will remember, and Archbishop Oscar Romero, the Archbishop of San Salvador, capital city of El Salvador, whose life and death some of us are very aware of. I mention these two newly canonized saints….not because they are more important than the others, but because they lived during our lifetime….at least for a good many of us…..we can more readily see the contrast in the lives of these holy men….a huge
contrast….but in the end they have both joined the ranks of canonized saints. (Here is a picture of the two saints taken in 1978) Oscar Arnulfo Romero was born on 15th August 1917 in Ciudad Barrios in the San Miguel department of El Salvador. He was one of 8 children. The family, as you can imagine were very poor. His father taught Oscar some basic carpentry, because it was expected that he would contribute to the upkeep of the family. He also worked for a while…when he was about 13….with his brothers…in a gold mine….a hard, dangerous occu-pation. He entered the seminary, and studied in Rome, where he was ordained in
1942. He returned to El Salvador in 1943, and held various positions until 1970 when he was appointed an Auxiliary Bishop of San Salvador……then in 1974 Bishop of Santiago de Maria. In 1977 he became Archbishop of San Salvador. The government were happy with his appointment, because the country was in a political turmoil, and the government and army felt that he wouldn’t rock the boat. As the injustice and oppression of the poor increased, Saint Oscar spoke out more and more against the government. He was as-sassinated on March 24th 1980 while celebrating Mass at a small chapel attached to a hospice for the termi-nally ill. As he elevated the host at the consecration he was shot through the heart and died almost immedi-ately. A true martyr. Pope Saint Paul was born Giovanni Montini in Sarezzo, in northern Italy, into a family of local nobles. He en-tered the seminary in 1916 and was ordained a priest in 1920. He studied at the Gregorian University, the University of Rome and the Accademia dei Nobili Ecclesiastici. His organizational skills led him to a career in the Curia, the papal civil service. He worked in the Curia while Archbishop Eugenio Pacelli ….later Pius XII…. was the Secretary of State. At that time (1930’s) there was a great deal of political intrigue in Europe, and Giovanni Montini was involved in a number of diplomatic initiatives. Much of his priesthood was spent working in resolving political issues. In 1953 he became Archbishop of Milan. In 1958 he was made cardinal by Pope John XXIII and succeeded John as Pope in 1963. He presided over much of the Second Vatican Council which had been started by John XXIII. A very different life than Oscar Romero, but both men recognized as saints… for their lives of ho-liness….and for their efforts….each until the day he died….to spread the gospel message and to build the Kingdom of God. May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen

Sunday Scripture Reflection
PARISH OFFERING The collection for last week,
Sunday, October 14th, 2018 was $9,274 Your kindhearted generosity to
Holy Spirit Church is very much appreciated.
October 21, 2018 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time “What do you wish me to do for you?” Jesus
asks a similar question in different Gospel passages, but the request of James and John is not repeated on any other occasion. “Grant that in Your glory we may sit one at Your right and the other at your left.” They ask not for knowledge of God, not for crooked limbs to be straightened nor for the blind to see. They ask for power and authority. Jesus’ response should trouble them. “You do not know what you are asking.”
“Can you drink the cup that I drink?” Jesus asks. “They said to Him, ‘We can.’” But what is Christ’s cup? Could James and John have possibly known it or understood it here at the height of Jesus’ ministry? Jesus’ cup is the cup of trial, of difficulty, of public ridicule. His final, thirsting sip occurs as He hangs on the cross. In Christ’s kingdom, drinking His cup and participating in His life are not the sharing of power the way we are ac-customed. Jesus flips their paradigm. “Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.”
The cup of Jesus is the cup of giving oneself. “The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.” As Christians, how easy it can be to want the acclaim of good deeds, the gratitude for volunteering, the attention for donating to the church. “It shall not be so among you.” If you are overlooked, offer thanks to God for imitating Jesus, rather than bitter complaint at someone else’s oversight. Look for opportunities to do good deeds unnoticed. This week, consider one way you can drink the cup of Jesus!
