Dear friends,
We continue our difficult journey in response to the Coronavirus. We pray each day
and ask the Lord to assist us and strengthen us and give us hope. He does. In a very
special way he gives us a special light to guide us. He even gives us His own mother
Mary, the Star of the Sea.
In my service as a Navy chaplain I spent many years at sea. I recall one deployment
as the chaplain for a US Marine Landing Force that brought me into the South China
Sea. I offered the evening prayer over the ship public address system for all the
Sailors and Marines aboard. It was just before 10 pm and I then ventured out onto
one the observation decks onboard the large amphibious ship. There was no
artificial light. The ship was underway with only a few small navigational lights.
I looked up at the night sky. I had never seen so many stars in my life. It was an
amazing site. I felt as if I could reach out and touch the stars.
God made the universe and our planet earth. We are here for a time. We are here
for a purpose. We meet the challenges of our time. Our Blessed Mother Mary knew
challenges and knew Her Son would be there for Her and for us. We place our trust
in Him.
May I share the beautiful words of the hymn, "O Purest of Creatures."
O Purest of Creature, sweet Mother sweet maid.
The one spotless womb wherein Jesus was laid.
Dark night has come down on us, Mother and we.
Look out for thy shining, sweet star of the sea.
Sweet star of the sea, sweet star of the sea,
We look for thy shining, sweet star of the sea.
May the Light of Christ dispel the darkness of these times. May our Mother Mary,
the star of the sea guide us to Her Son and intercede for us.
God love you,
Bishop Coyle

May 24, 2020
John 17: 1-11
“I am in the world no more, but these are
in the world as I come to you.”
1. With the gift of eternal life
comes the responsibility to care for the world Jesus entrusted to us. In what ways
do you use the gifts God has given you to
enrich our world? 2. Recall an incident where you
experienced conflict between the ways of
the world and the ways of God. How did you resolve it?
3. Jesus prays that we experience
the oneness with God that he enjoys. How do you seek the oneness with God
that Jesus desires for each of us?

Children’s Page
Dear Friends at Good Shepherd Parish,
A few days ago I came across an album of pictures and letters presented to me on the occasion of
my farewell at Good Shepherd and my retirement from full- time ministry almost two years ago. It
brought back many wonderful, cherished memories of my years serving you as pastor. As you may
know, after a temporary assignment as administrator of St. Anthony Parish in Rocky Point, I was
able to resume my retirement and currently live in a private residence on the North Fork. On
weekends I have been assisting the pastor of St. Francis Cabrini in Coram.
At every parish in our diocese and our country, all public Masses came to an abrupt end as the
Corona Virus spread rapidly and with lethal force. Here in New York we are still in the throes of
this pandemic and will be one of the states to open up more gradually and reach some level of
normal activity. How our lives have changed in a matter of months! Who could have even
imagined the magnitude of what has taken place? Each of us is struggling in one way or another to
cope and manage our lives in a new way. Spiritually we hunger for the Eucharist, the Body of
Christ, but we also yearn for that fellowship of believers that we call the Body of Christ.
The virtual world can take us just so far. On a deeper level we desire that personal contact that
engages all of our senses and fulfills us in a unique way. I know Bishop Coyle and the staff have
been shepherding you during this time as best they can. I don’t envy the task or what lies before
them as we move to a gradual re-entry to parish life. On more than one occasion I have thanked the
Good Lord that I am retired!
I think one of the bright spots in these dark days has been a greater awareness and appreciation of
the people in our lives whom we truly value, whether it be family members or parishioners or
friends. How often we have prayed for their well- being and safety. In some instances we have
prayed for their departed souls. This strange closeness at a time of distancing can fortify us in the
face of any visible or invisible enemy. The same applies to our relationship with God who is closer
to us than we are to ourselves. The bonds we have forged in love and faith are stronger than death
or any dreadful virus.
For all of you at Good Shepherd I wish good health and safe journey. Let us keep each other in
prayer. I look forward to being with you in person some time in the future. Until then….. Peace.
