WHO DO YOU REPRESENT?
One Sunday as they drove home from church, a little girl turned to her mother and said, "Mommy, there’s something about the pastor’s message this morning that I don’t understand." The mother said, "Oh? What is it?"
The little girl replied, "Well, he said that God is bigger than we are. He said God is so big that He could hold the world in His hand. Is that true?" The mother replied, "Yes, that’s true, honey." "But Mommy, he also said that God comes to live inside of us when we believe in Jesus as our Savior. Is that true, too?" Again, the mother assured the little girl that what the pastor had said was true. With a puzzled look on her face the little girl then asked, "If God is bigger than us and He lives in us, wouldn’t He show through?"
Good point, little girl. If God is really living inside each of us, He ought to be “showing through.”
St. Paul tells us “we are ambassadors for Christ.” An ambassador is someone who represents his country in a distant land. The United States has ambassadors, or diplomats, in virtually every nation on earth. Ambassadors play the essential role of representing our nation’s interests. They are the President’s voice to people in foreign lands. They are authorized to act on the President’s behalf. They have the power to negotiate treaties, solicit favors, extend sympathies, offer congratulations, give thanks, and right wrongs.
Christians are ambassadors for Jesus Christ. We are representatives of the greatest king and kingdom known to humankind. Our true citizenship is in heaven. While on earth, we represent Jesus Christ, and the interests of His Kingdom.
We are in the Year of Mercy. During this holy year we are to know about God’s mercy, experience God’s mercy more deeply, and give God’s mercy to others. This is the responsibility of an ambassador of Christ. An ambassador reflects on the agenda, convictions, truths, and causes of the one he represents. We represent Jesus Christ.
There are some places where it might be fun to be an ambassador. But there are other places where being an ambassador may not be so much fun. Could you imagine being an ambassador to Afghanistan? North Korea? Iraq? Generally, ambassadors are afforded respect and protection even while visiting hostile nations. But there are some hot spots around the world where not even ambassadors are welcome—places where people are so hostile that the life of the ambassador is in danger.
This same thing is true for the ambassador of Jesus Christ. It is easy to speak for Jesus Christ in a church setting among friends. But as ambassadors, we need to be willing to speak on behalf of Jesus Christ to those who are hostile to the Gospel message.
Does anybody know that you are an ambassador for Christ? Is Jesus Christ showing through you?
Fr. Dave
