It is worth noting that the New Testament writers never made one attempt to explain the Trinity. Indeed, they did not even use the word. They simply spoke of God in three different ways and let it stand at that. Sometimes they said God the Father, sometimes God the Son, and sometimes God the Holy Spirit. And sometimes they used all three expressions together but always without explanation. The Scriptures tell us that God by His very nature is outgoing, that He reaches out to people. He is a Father, and any father, worthy of the name, is involved with his family. He provides for them and gives to them; he feels what they feel; he shares their joys and sorrows, their triumphs and failures. God as a Father is fully involved with the human family. His nature is to give; He is always reaching out, holding nothing back. He is not a lonely, isolated aristocrat, but a loving, involved Father, whose very nature is to give. God has become concrete in history, in and through the life of Jesus Christ, His Son. Jesus was, of course, a real person, a human being. On that point the New Testament is unmistakably clear. Those who knew Him best saw Him first as a man, an incredible, remarkable man, but nevertheless a man. Then somewhere along the way, they began to see something else in Him. Peter was the first to express it. He said, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God." Then others began to see and to say the same thing. Thomas called Him "my Lord and my God". John wrote of Him: "In the beginning was the Word, the Word was in the presence of God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us, and we have seen His glory, the glory of an only Son coming from the Father." That was the essence of the message which the early church went out to share with the world. They called it the Gospel, which means "the good news". Jesus had given them a great ethic, the greatest ethic that the world has ever heard, but that was not the good news. Jesus had taught them a great theology, but that was not the good news. The good news was that God had invaded human history in and through the life of a Galilean

carpenter. They had seen Him with their eyes. They had heard Him with their ears. They had touched Him with their hands. Never again could they think of God as an abstraction. God, for them, had become concrete and specific in the life of a man. Francis Thompson was right when he called Him "The Hound of Heaven". He is on our trail. He has taken the initiative. He has moved out of eternity into time and space. He has become one of us. God in the person of His Holy Spirit is always with us. He is the Father in Heaven, who is from everlasting to everlasting. He is the Son, who lived in Galilee more than two thousand years ago. But both of those concepts, as true as they are, leave God a long way off and a long way back. The message is not complete until we speak of God as the Holy Spirit, who is both with us and within us. God is forever our contemporary, our constant companion and helper, and guide and friend wherever life may lead us.

When Theodore Roosevelt was president of the United States, he had a favorite political story. He said he knew it was a true story because he made it up himself. It was about a congressman who had been accused of not supporting the Monroe Doctrine. The man quickly began to explain. He said, "I believe in the Monroe Doctrine. I support the Monroe Doctrine. The only thing I said was I do not know what it is." That is a fairly accurate description of how many people feel about the doctrine of the Trinity. They accept it; they believe it; they are devoted to it, but they are not at all sure what it means. The concept of the Trinity is inherent to our Christian faith. We recite the Creed that says: "I believe in God the Father...and in Jesus Christ, His only Son...I believe in the Holy Spirit." We sing about it in our hymns: "Holy Holy Holy, merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity." One theologian, who had obviously struggled long and hard with the subject, said: "The Trinity is a doctrine, which if a person does not believe it, he might lose his soul. But if he tries to understand it, he will probably lose his mind." When the New Testament writers tried to report their experiences with God, they found it necessary to say, "Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." They believed in only one true God, but they had experienced the one true God in three ways. They had known Him as God the Father in Heaven, creator of all things. Then they came to know Him as God the Son, who for a few years had walked with them on the earth. And finally they had come to know Him as God the Holy Spirit, who was with them always because He lived within their hearts. In the New Testament, the Trinity is not so much a doctrine that is believed as it is an experience that is lived. And it should be the same in our lives. Our Gospel says, "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son." This is the central theme of the Trinity; the eternal God has made Himself known in the person of Jesus Christ. We know, of course, that Jesus was human. He got tired and needed rest. He got hungry and needed food; thirsty, and needed water. He lived a real life and

TRINITY SUNDAY

He died a real death. He was bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh. But when it was all over, those who knew Him best realized that they had met God in the life of a Galilean carpenter. The first chapter of John's Gospel says it like this: "In the beginning was the Word; the Word was in God's presence, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us." This meant God has moved into the neighborhood and lived with us. He put up His tent right next to ours. God the Father in Heaven can seem a long way off. God, as revealed in Jesus of Nazareth, can seem a long way back. But God the Holy Spirit is not only up there in Heaven and back there in history. He is with us here on the earth, right now. Perhaps an analogy would help. If I were to ask you, "Where is the sun?" You might answer, "It is up there in the heavens, ninety-three million miles away." And your answer would be correct, but it would not be complete because the sun is all around us. So it is with God. He is up there in Heaven, and we have caught glimpses of Him among the stars. He is back there in history, and we have seen His glory shining on the face of Jesus Christ. But let us never forget that He is the one in Whom we live and move and have our being right now---today. There is one true God, whom we have come to know in three different ways, the Trinity of experience.

GOD JUST SMILES When you can’t put your prayers into words,

God hears your heart.

When you feel abandoned, empty and upset,

God fills you with love.

When you are afraid and losing your way,

God walks with you.

But, when you try to explain the Blessed trinity

to someone,

God just smiles. Today is the Feast of the Most Blessed Trinity... Anthony Wilhelm in his book Christ Among Us wrote the following about the Blessed Trinity… “Ít is good to remember that the Blessed Trinity is a mystery. We can know something about the Trinity, but in the final analysis, very, very little. Life is full of mysteries--the ultimate composition of an atom, what life itself is---and so we should not be surprised that the inner life of God is the deepest of all mysteries. Whether or not one can accept our belief in the Blessed Trinity depends on God’s gift of faith. The mystery of the Blessed Trinity is, there is but one God, but in God there are three divine, completely equal Persons, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Each of these three persons is really distinct from the other two. Each is wholly God, equal to the other two. One did not come before the other. There is only one God.” I’m sure that is very clear. But one of the great lessons we derive from Christ’s teaching about the Blessed Trinity is that God is not unlike us. Rather, God is three Persons, a family who love one another with a joy and happiness we can hardy begin to imagine. I told you it was a mystery. So, thank God for our gift of faith. Once again when you try to explain the mystery of the Blessed Trinity to someone, “God just smiles.”

CHAPLET OF THE DIVINE MERCY

Everyone is invited to come and pray the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy every Saturday

after the 8:00 a.m. Mass, followed by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until 9:00 a.m. Join us!

IN REMEMBRANCE Next Monday, June 12, 2017 at 12:00 noon, the Church of the Epiphany will join other churches in and near the Village of Pinecrest in tolling their church bells 49 times in remembrance of the 49 victims of the shootings in the Pulse Club of Orlando.

The families of the victims of the Pulse Club shootings want their family members to be remembered on the anniversary of these senseless shootings. These families want the toll of the bells to remind people of our need to spread love-not hate. The Church of the Epiphany encourages everyone who hears the toll of bells on June 12, 2017 to say a prayer for these 49 victims and to pray for peace.

You know the story as Jesus told it. A rich man called together his servants and divided his wealth among them. He gave one five thousand pieces of silver, another two thousand, and a third one thousand. The man then went on a journey and stayed gone a long while. When he came home, he called his servants back together to find out what they had done with his money. The first two men reported that they had doubled their holdings, and both of them were highly commended and rewarded. But the third man told how he had buried his endowment in the ground, and therefore, had nothing to show but the original thousand pieces. In response to this, his master said, "Take the thousand away from him and give it to the man with ten thousand." Those who have will get more until they grow rich, while those who have not will lose even the little they have." Now, what did Jesus mean by this story and especially that last part, which some people have found rather disturbing? On the surface, it seems that He is endorsing the idea that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. In this parable, Jesus was not discussing economics. He was simply stating a law of life that applies to all of us, rich and poor alike. Each of us has an endowment entrusted to us by God. We do not all have the same. Some have more; others have less, but all of us have something. Now before you start finding injustice in that, stop and consider what a dull world this would be if we were all alike. Not only dull, it would be impossible. Life would just sort of grind to a stop and die of boredom. We've been hearing a good bit lately about a scientific technique called "cloning." I don't understand anything about it except it has something to do with genetic engineering. The idea seems to be that someday scientists will be able to control the hereditary process so that a child is an exact copy of the parent. Well, the great Giver of Life didn't see fit to do it that way. He made us all individual---separate, distinct and different, no two of us alike, and I suspect, it will always be that way. At least, I hope so because much of the beauty and charm and

R I C H G E T R I C H E R ?

vitality of life is found in the variety of the people---a world of billions, all of them made in the image of God, and yet each one is unique. Every time God makes a baby, He breaks the mold and throws it away. You are not a copy. You are an original that has never been copied. So, there is no one else in the world exactly like you! Jesus said, "He gave one five thousand pieces of silver, another two thousand, and a third one thousand." All of them were different, but each of them had an endowment held in trust for their master. That's how it is with you and me. Each of us has a little piece of God's great gift of life and a little segment of time to see what we can do with it. That is what Jesus is saying: we all have an endowment entrusted to us by God. The second lesson can best be stated in the little catch phrase, "Use it or lose it." This is what Jesus meant when He said, "Take the thousand away from him and give it to the man with ten thousand." He was not espousing economic injustice. He was simply stating a basic law that applies in every area of living. It is this: life cannot be hoarded. All of its capacities and possibilities are intended to be used and invested. If we refuse to do that, one day we will realize that they have slipped away and we do not even have them any more. Consider, for example, your capacity to love. You were born with it; we all were. It is a priceless gift, a little part of the very heart of God. But you can't hoard it. You can't hide it. You've got to give it away. You've got to invest it in people. If you do that, it will grow, and you will have more love than you can ever use. Yet if you don't do that, if you try to keep it for yourself, it will all slip away, and one day you will find yourself wondering if you even know what love means. Jesus said, "Those who have, will get more until they grow rich, while those who have not will lose even the little they have." But He wasn't talking about money. He was talking about life, your life and mine. Give it to God. Share it with others. The more you give, the more you will have. And in the good sense of the word, you will be one of the rich who keeps getting richer. We don't have to lose it, not if we use it.
