PASTOR’S PEN
pass him by and do nothing to help. As the
apostle James states in one of his letters, "To him that knows to do good and fails to do it, for him, it is sin." He means it is just as much a sin to do
nothing when called upon, as it is to do something
that is wrong. From the teachings of Jesus and
the writings of the apostles, we get the same
message: it is a sin not to work, not to care, not to
give, not to pray, not to help.
Jesus told the people that unless they repent,
they will perish. He said, "If the tree bears no fruit, it will be cut down." It isn't necessary to see in
those statements a warning of harsh and
vindictive judgment. They are simply a recognition
of one of the basic laws of life—that we either use
what we have or we lose it. Life works that way in
almost any direction you want to look. A
neglected, unexercised friendship will eventually
die a natural death. The same thing can happen to
marriage. More of them die of neglect than are
ever killed by abuse.
The tree in the parable was given every
opportunity to produce. It was carefully planted,
tended, fertilized, and watered. Still it produced
nothing. Jesus is drawing an analogy to our life
and saying we are accountable. Most of us have
been planted in a garden and given every
opportunity for productive living. Let not one of
us ever excuse our neglect by saying, "I never had a chance. There was nothing that I could do." That
is simply not true. Everyone of us has some
endowment from God that we can use in His
service.
But we must learn to care, to deliberately,
consciously become giving, loving, sharing
people. How long has it been since you went out
of your way for someone else? When Jesus
talked about fruitful living, I don't think He meant
the big and impressive things. We are all capable
of those little unselfish deeds that communicate
concern and build bridges of understanding, and
these are the very essence of fruitful living.
For most, the word sin calls to mind a limited,
specific list of wrong deeds such as murder,
adultery, stealing, lying and profanity. This
definition of sin is, of course, accurate as far as it
goes. The difficulty is that many of us stop here,
and our understanding of sin never goes beyond
this list of obviously evil and vulgar deeds. People
of the first century apparently had a similar
problem. They conceived of sin in a narrow and
oversimplified fashion. For them, there was a
direct correlation between sin and suffering.
Whenever people suffered, it was assumed to be
a sort of punishment for sin.
Jesus did not accept such an inaccurate reading
of life. He knew people sometimes suffer, not
because they are bad, but because they are
good. Sometimes they suffer because of
accidents, and sometimes innocent people suffer
because of someone else's wrong. So, Jesus
challenged His audience to expand their
understanding of sin and suffering. He mentioned
two recent tragedies. A group of Galilean
worshipers had been slaughtered in the Temple;
and in Siloam, eighteen men had been killed by
a falling tower. Concerning both events, Jesus
asked the same question: "Do you think this means they were worse sinners than anyone else?" Then, He answered His own question: "Not at all, and unless you repent, you will also perish." Finally, He clinched His lesson with a story of a
barren fig tree. It had been planted, protected,
and watered, but bore no fruit. And the gardener
said, "I will wait one more year. If it bears no fruit, I will cut it down."
The point of the parable is obvious: there is
another kind of sin, and that is omission. Sin is not
only something bad that we do; it also something
good that we fail to do. We would probably be
surprised to discover how much that theme is part
of the thinking of Christ. You remember He told a
story of a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho
and who along the way was beaten and robbed.
Jesus told that story not so much to criticize crime
as indifference. The real culprits of the story are a
priest and Levite who see the wounded man, but

THE BEATITUDES
The Ten Commandments in the Old Testament
were given to Moses on a mountain in the desert.
They defined for the people of Israel the behavior
God expected of them. The Beatitudes of the
New Testament were given by Jesus on a
mountain in Galilee. They further define for us the
behavior and attitude we are to cultivate as
followers of Christ. These guidelines complement
the Commandments. Jesus calls us to perfection,
not a moral minimum. He wants us to go beyond
the Commandments to nurture a life of virtue. The
Catechism of the Catholic Church describes the
Beatitudes as "the heart of Jesus' preaching."
We've heard the eight Beatitudes over and over
again. "Blessed are the poor in spirit: the kingdom of heaven is theirs," etc. They sound lovely, full of
beauty and balance and music. But don't be
seduced by the poetry. That passage in the
Gospel contains the most difficult challenge of all
time. The values of the world are greed, self-
importance, selfishness, impurity, aggressiveness,
revenge and war. Our Lord takes those values,
gives them a good shaking, turns them upside-
down and puts them standing on their heads.
Then, He points down at them and says: They are
not my values. Have no doubt about it; they are
not my values. Then, He invites us to look up and
He says: “My values are poverty of spirit, purity of life, gentleness of heart. My values are mercy, justice, reconciliation, forgiveness and peace.”
What He is saying is: I am giving you a new
program. I am giving you a new manifesto. I am
giving you a new life-style. I am giving you the
values by which you should live. I am presenting
you with a challenge. The Ten Commandments
were written on tablets of stone. The eight
Beatitudes are to be written in your heart. If you
want to be a follower of mine, you have to be a
loving person, a gentle person, a giving person.
And if these values and attitudes are not being
manifested in your life, then you are not really
following me at all. Our Lord is actually telling us to
base our life on the Sermon on the Mount. It's not
an easy thing to do.
At the heart of the Scripture's readings is the
theme of trust in God. The Scripture contrasts the
fate of those who only trust in human beings, with
the fate of those who trust in God. Those who only
trust in human beings are like a barren desert
shrub; whereas those who trust in God are like a
fruitful tree planted beside a flowing river.
To trust in God is to rely on God as the one source
of life. Those who trust in God are the poor in spirit
whom Jesus declares blessed in the Beatitudes. A
very wealthy person can be poor in spirit. We can
be "detached" from material things and attached
to God. When Jesus says, "Blessed are the poor," He is not giving a blessing to starvation and
misery. Starvation and misery are evil. What is
being blessed is reliance on God. Those who put
their trust only in human things will be
disappointed; those who put their trust in God will
not. Only God can fill our emptiness; only God can
satisfy the hunger of our hearts. But, often God is
the last one we turn to, rather than the first.
During the Holy Season of Lent we might try to
meditate on the Beatitudes and make them part of
our daily lives.

THEY ARE WITH YOU ALWAYS
Don Fulford, the C.E.O. of the Association of Miraculous Medal wrote a personal story in the magazine, “Spring Bulletin of the Miraculous Medal.” It will serve as a Lenten meditation. “Many years ago, as a 16-year-old, I had plans to go out with my friends on a Friday night. Before leaving the house, I waved good bye to my Mom. She simply said, “Have fun, be good.” It turned to her and quipped back, “Can you do both”? She gave me an incredible smile and laughed as I ran out of the door. I guess I thought she would be around forever, but those were her last words she said to me. She and my Dad went out on a date to celebrate their 25 year of marriage. They were involved in a car accident, and never saying another word, she died as a result of her injuries. Over the next several years, I questioned how God could take my Mom so quickly and without warning. I didn’t understand, I was confused, I was angry, and I was left to figure it all out. As my Dad continued to heal from the accident, I would pray each might for one thing, “God when time comes, please give me the chance to say Good bye to my Dad. Over the next 34 years I made sure to tell my Dad how much I love him and when I said Good Bye it was with meaning and love. This past year, we were called to his bedside to say our final good bye as cancer took over his brain. It wasn’t easy, but we held hands in the middle of the night and I said good bye. He squeezed my hand, told me how lucky he was to have me as a son and finished by telling me he would be with me always. God had granted my request. He died a week later. When I arrived home from the funeral, my four-year-old little girl and seven-year-old son were there to greet me with big hugs and smiles. As I looked in to their eyes, I realized that my Dad was correct. He is with me forever. The gifts he had given me over the years were already being given to my children, just as Dad and his Dad’s Dad had given to him. The treasure of faith, hope and love are meant to be passed on to others. Our lives would be much different if we weren’t to love one another, if weren’t given the gifts of faith to stay strong in the darkest hours, or given the gift of hope of eternal life, and optimism when times are tough. Yes, it is always hard to say goodbye, but be not afraid, “they are with you always.”
“Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” These words were addressed by Jesus to his contemporaries, and addressed to us in today’s liturgy. We always begin our celebration of the Eucharist with s call to repentance. First reading (Exodus 3:1-8.13-15). We are shown God’s concern for his oppressed people.
Second reading (1 Corinthians 10:1-6.10-12). What happened to the Israelites in the desert is a warning for us Christians.
Gospel (Luke 9:28-36). Jesus stresses the necessity of repentance and tells the people that time is running out.
