FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN:

Once again we emphasize the importance of having a Health Care Proxy, a person to whom you designate permission to make !decisions for you in lifethreatening illnesses when you are unable to do so. Such a person (spouse, child, neighbor, friend) should faithfully follow your desire and your direction in such matters as the continuation or discontinuation of lifeprolonging techniques. Since the time of Pope Pius XII, the Church has made the distinction between ordinary and extraordinary means of preserving life.!Ordinary means (such as nourishment, acceptable health procedures, use of drugs that have a reasonable likelihood or helping the !person) are mandatory. Extraordinary means (experimental procedures, drugs or treatments) are not. Your Health Care Proxy should be familiar with your wishes and should have a copy of the proxy form that you fill out.!We have put in our bulletin several times a standard Health Care Proxy form issued by our Archdiocese. We present it here for your use again. The forms are in the back of church. If you have any questions about this, please see one of our priests.!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

WELCOME BACK, FATHER JAMES!

We are happy to have Father James Nathan with us during the months of July and August. Father was with us last summer and we are delighted he can be with us again. He is from Sri Lanka (as is Father Joseph) and is studying in Rome. We welcome him back to St. Theresa’s and we know you will be delighted to see him again.

POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER FOR THE YEAR OF MERCY

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him.!Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.!Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!”!You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified.!You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.!Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and !restore sight to the blind. !We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever !and ever. Amen!

Invite a Friend ! Over the last 20 years many of our parishioners have had good friends that have moved out of the area. While these people lived in Pelham Bay they had a strong devotion to St. Theresa. Why not give these people a call and invite them to spend a night at the feast with you. The Friday of the feast (July 22nd) would be a great day to do that as many of the priests and !deacons that have served our parish in those 20 years will be in attendance at the Mass at 7:00PM.! ! Thank You We ask all of our parishioners to join us and say thankyou to those individuals that own homes or live within the !immediate area of our feast. We realize that at times during the week of our feast those local residents are inconvenienced. We thank them for their understanding & patience. We ask these homeowners to contact the rectory if they feel that there is any condition that needs to be addressed.!!

JULY 10, 2016!

MESSAGE OF POPE FRANCIS FOR THIS SUNDAY: Today’s Gospel is the famous Parable of the Good Samaritan. Who was this man? He was an ordinary person coming down from!

Jerusalem on his way to Jericho on the road that crosses the Judean Desert. A short time before, on that road a man had been attacked!by brigands, robbed, beaten and left half dead by the wayside. Before the Samaritan arrived, a priest as well as a Levite had passed by, that is, two people associated with worship in the Lord’s Temple. They saw the poor man, but passed him by without stopping. !Instead, when the Samaritan saw that man, “he had compassion” (Lk 10:33), the Gospel says. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; then he set him on his own mount, took him to an inn and paid for his board and lodging...in short, he took care of him: this is the example of love of neighbor. However, why does Jesus choose a Samaritan to play the lead in the parable?! Because Samaritans were despised by Jews on account of their different religious traditions; and yet Jesus shows that the heart of that!Samaritan was good and generous and that unlike the priest and the Levite he puts into practice the will of God who wants mercy rather than sacrifices (cf. Mk 12:33). God always wants mercy and does not condemn it in anyone. He wants heartfelt mercy because he is merciful and can understand well our misery, our difficulties and also our sins. He gives all of us this merciful heart of His! The Samaritan does precisely this: he really imitates the mercy of God, mercy for those in need.! A man who lived to the full this Gospel of the Good Samaritan is the Saint we are commemorating this week: St. Camillus de Lellis, Founder of the Clerks Regular Ministers to the Sick, Parton of ill people and healthcare workers. St. Camillus died on July 14, 1614: Be “Good Samaritans” as he was! And I hope that doctors, nurses and all those who work in hospitals and clinics may also be inspired by the same spirit. Let us entrust this intention to the intercession of Mary Most Holy.!

SUMMER ATTIRE AT MASS:!!

Please show respect for the presence of Our Lord and for the !Holy Sacrifice of the Mass by dressing appropriately for Mass on Sunday. Known as the “Lily of the Mohawks”, and the “Genevieve of New France” an Indian virgin of the Mohawk tribe, born according to some authorities at the Turtle Castle of Ossernenon, according to others at the village of Gandauoge, in 1656; died at Caughnawaga (Kahnawake), Québec, Canada, 17 April, 1680. ! Her mother was a Christian Algonquin who had been captured by the Iroquois and saved from a captive’s fate by the father of Tekakwitha, to whom she also bore a son. When Tekakwitha was about four years old, her parents and brother died of smallpox, and the child was adopted by her aunts and a uncle who had become chief of the Turtle clan. Although smallpox had marked her face and seriously impaired her eyesight and her manner was reserved and shrinking, her aunts began when she was yet very young to form !marriage projects for her, from which, as she grew older, she shrank with great aversion.! In 1667 the Jesuit missionaries Fremin, Bruyas, and Pierron, accompanying the Mohawk deputies who had been to Quebec to !conclude peace with the French, spent three days in the lodge of Tekakwitha’s uncle. From them she received her first knowledge of Christianity, but although she forthwith eagerly accepted it in her heart she did not at that time ask to be baptized.! Some time later the Turtle clan moved to the north bank of the Mohawk River, the “castle” being built above what is now the town of Fonda. Here in the midst of scenes of carnage, debauchery, and idolatrous frenzy Tekakwitha lived a life of remarkable virtue, at heart not only a Christian but a Christian virgin, for she firmly and often, with great risk to herself, resisted all efforts to induce her to marry. !When she was eighteen, Father Jacques de Lamberville arrived to take charge of the mission which included the Turtle clan, and from him, at her earnest request, Tekakwitha received baptism. Thenceforth she practiced her religion unflinchingly in the face of almost !unbearable opposition, till finally her uncle’s lodge ceased to be a place of protection to her and she was assisted by some Christian !Indians to escape to Caughnawaga (Kahnawake) on the St. Laurence. Here she lived in the cabin of Anastasia Tegonhatsihonga, a Christian Indian woman, her extraordinary sanctity impressing not only her own people but the French and the missionaries.! She lived a life of prayer, penance and service to the sick and suffering. Upon her death devotion to her began immediately to be !manifested by her people. When she died, the smallpox marks on her face miraculously disappeared, prompting people to say that !Kateri had looked at heaven and her face became bright and clean. Many pilgrims visit her grave in Caughnawaga (Kahnawake) in !Canada. She is also honored at her place of baptism in Fonda, New York and at the Shrine of the North American Martyrs in !Auriesville, New York, the place of her birth.! On June 22, 1980, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II; her feast day is celebrated on July 14th. Blessed Kateri was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, 2012.! Kateri said: “I am not my own; I have given myself to Jesus. He must be my only love. The state of helpless poverty that may befall me if I do not marry does not frighten me. All I need is a little food and a few pieces of clothing. With the work of my hands I shall always earn what is necessary and what is left over I’ll give to my relatives and to the poor. If I should become sick and unable to work, then I shall be like the Lord on the cross. He will have mercy on me and help me, I am sure.”!

PRAYER TO ST. KATERI TEKAKWITHA

St. Kateri, Star of Native People and Bright Light for all! We thank God for your heroic courage, constant perseverance! And deep love of the Cross. Pray for us that our love for Christ may deepen. And may we imitate you in following God’s!

Will even when difficulties arise. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!

! St. Benedict was born at Nursia in Italy. When he was a young man, his father sent him to study in Rome. During that time Benedict knew that God was calling him to the life of a monk. Benedict went to live in a cave near a little town called Subiaco. He remained there for three years, living in silence, prayer and penance. Soon others came to ask if they could share his life. Gradually the group of men who wanted to become monks could live. About the year 529, Benedict started the famous monastery of Monte Cassino.! Benedict helped his followers to live a holy life by giving them a rule. The rule was a book that told the monks the ways in which they could best live together to love God. Benedict used the Bible and the writings of holy persons as help in writing the rule.! Benedict said that the monastery (the house where the monks lived) was a school for the service of the Lord. A monk called an abbot would be the head of the monastery. The monks would spend their day praising God by praying together, doing spiritual reading, and sharing in the manual work. The monks would share everything they had.! Benedict died at Monte Cassino and was buried there with his sister, Saint Scholastica.! Little by little, the Rule of St. Benedict spread throughout western Europe. Today there are many men and women all over the world who call themselves Benedictines because they try to love God in the way shown to them by St. Benedict in his life and his rule.! The monastery of Monte Cassino has been destroyed and rebuilt three times. Invading tribes destroyed the monastery in the year 600 and again in 900. It was also ruined during World War II. Today it is again rebuilt and stands in memory of St. Benedict’s life and work. In 1964, Pope Paul VI named St. Benedict the patron saint of Europe.! The motto of the Benedictine Order is Oraet LaboraPray and Work. “You should prefer absolutely nothing to the love of Christ, who will lead us all together to eternal life” (CH 72, Rule of St. Benedict). !
