A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Second Sunday of Advent December 8, 2019

“Everything written before our time was written for our instruction, that we might derive hope from the lessons of patience and the words of encouragement in the Scrip-tures…the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him, a spirit of wisdom and understanding. A spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord…” How special are the words of scripture helping us to really live the advent season. The promises and prophecies of the first testament direct our attention to the coming messiah and ask two things of us: patience and encouragement. These are gifts already packaged to be wrapped during this holy season. What are the gifts? Because of Jesus’ coming we refer to them as gifts of the Holy Spirit offered to us at our Confirmation. During this week, unwrap each one, opening your heart to a different gift each day. May wisdom direct you, understand-ing guide you to see the need of the Savior, counsel in giving care and support for someone in need, strength to focus on what really matters and respect for the Lord who comes to save us. These are steps to be taken this second week of advent.

The Power of Satan

Indeed, anyone who does not believe Satan, (the Devil), has power, should reconsider his/her be-lief. The power of Satan is real. Nonetheless, it is not infinite. As it is noted in our Catechism, Satan is “only a creature, powerful from the fact that he is pure spir-it, but sill a creature (Catechism # 395).”Satan can-not, (even thought he surely desires), prevent the building up of God’s Kingdom on earth. In addition, we should believe Satan can act in the world. He does so “out of hatred for God, and his kingdom in Christ Jesus (Catechism #395).” Sa-tan’s actions “may cause grave injuries - of a spiritual nature and, indirectly, even of a physical nature - to each man and to society...Ibid).” The actions of Sa-tan are “permitted by divine providence (Ibid).” It is unknown to merely human creatures, the reason di-vine providence “should permit diabolical activity, but we know that in everything God works for good, with those who love him (Ibid).”

Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe On Wednesday, December 11th, there will be a Vigil Mass, and Eucharistic Exposition and Benediction, beginning at 7:00 p.m. (Spanish) On Thursday, December 12th, there will be a Mass at 7:00 pm. (Spanish)
