The mission of St. Cornelius Church is to invite everyone into a loving and personal relationship with Jesus Christ through wor-ship, education, and community. We support one another’s val-ues and beliefs, and we strive to have our diverse community enrich our prayer and worship, so that we all may embrace Je-sus together. In the spirit of our patron, St. Cornelius, we wel-come all who wish to reignite their faith and journey with God.

DEVELOPMENTS
As 2018 is about to yield to 2019, I thought I would share some recent developments here at the Saint Cornelius place. LOSING A JOB? While usually a bad news prospect, in this case, it's not bad at all. As you know, since the end of September I have been the administrator of Saint Thecla Parish. Hopefully, by the time you are reading this, that role will come to an end. I have it on reliable information that a new administrator, perhaps a pastor, will be appointed to replace me in January. Aw, shucks! I was just getting used to being schizophrenic. I guess I will have to content myself with simple paranoia. (Of course, we both know that such a plan, even when the source is reliable, doesn't always come to fruition. I'll let you know if this really happens.) MUSIC DIRECTOR: The quest is accomplished! If you were part of the Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration on December 12 at 7:00 PM, you had a chance to see him in action and hear his musical gifts as a director and accompanist. Folks I spoke to after the Mass were very impressed with MICHAEL HAWES. He signed his Ministry Agreement the day before, so he is ours! So why isn't he playing at Mass this weekend? That is because he has several commitments to fulfill, and needs to let former employers know that he will be leaving them to take this position. Therefore, Michael will not be here for Christmas or New Year's nor the weekends following. His position with us will not begin until the end of January. Although he has no previous experience as a parish music director (We have been there before.), he comes highly recommended by Lindsey Adams who was director here until last August. But I have every confidence that Michael will be a good addition to our parish. By the way, he prefers to be called Michael. His bio & photo will be in the Bulletin as the time of his ministry draws closer. (We are grateful to Mike Dolan, long-time St. Cornelius Music Director, for covering the holidays at our parish. SCHOOL RENTAL: I announced to you some weeks ago that agreement had been reached between the Archdiocese of Chicago and Chicago Public Schools for the long-term leasing of the school building here at Saint Cornelius. After years of waiting and wondering if this would ever happen, CPS is anxious to get the lease signed, hopefully by January 1, 2019. At present, the lease is in the Archdiocesan Legal Department where it is scrupulously being examined by our lawyers. Once they are finished with it and CPS's lawyers have reviewed it as well, I will sign it and the rent will begin coming in. How much will the rent be? What portion does the parish keep and what goes to Pope Francis Global Academy? These are question yet to be answered. I suspect that the details will be worked out next month. I can tell you that our school will become an early learning center for pre-kindergarten through first grade, that the entire building will be leased, and that the lease will cover Monday thru Friday from early morning to early evening. It will not interfere with our Religious Education Program which meets Sunday mornings. When all the specifics are agreed upon, I will share them with you. As Advent began, I mentioned in my Bulletin article that if Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, then Advent is the most happening time of the year. As I explained my meaning, I did not include the events just described. It has been more happening than even I envisioned. One never knows what the Lord has in mind. We found that out in December. What surprises await us in 2019? Stay tuned! Have a Happy New Year! Fr. Dan

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
“See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” (1 JOHN 3:1)
During this season of giving, let us remember the most important gift we have received – being chil-dren of God. As God’s children, it’s important that we express our love for others as well. Tell your spouse, children and other family members and friends that you love them, frequently.
FROM THE PARISH NURSE... That first snow of the season, is also a reminder that pre-cautions need to be taken to avoid any significant health problems. Sonja Vojcic has some tips on What you need to know about shoveling snow.
“Have you ever heard of “heart attack snow?” Snow so wet and heavy it can be dangerous to certain individuals?
It's not a myth. So before you pick up a shovel to clean the snow around your property today and this weekend, there are some things you should keep in mind.
If you are healthy and athletic, snow shoveling can be a good exercise. However, if you are at high risk for heart disease or have a pre-existing heart condition, snow shoveling can be dangerous unless you take some pre-cautions.
'The heart is pumping blood through a complex branch of arteries. Smaller arteries in your legs and arms constrict in the cool weather, and this puts a strain on the heart,' says Dr. Shoeb Sitafalwalla, a cardiologist with Advocate Heart Institute at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. 'In addition to this, lifting a heavy amount of snow increases the heart rate and oxygen demand. This combination can be lethal in a person with pre-existing heart disease.'
Dr. Sitafalwalla recommends the following six tips for safe snow shoveling: •Check with your doctor first. If you have a risk factor, consult with your physician as a safety check to make sure it's safe for you to clear the driveway or sidewalk. •Push the snow, don't lift it. Pushing the snow is less strenuous on your heart. •Use a snow blower. Even pushing a heavy snow blower can be dangerous, so be careful and take frequent breaks. •Avoid a heavy meal before shoveling snow. Heavy meals have a tendency to attract more blood towards the gut and away from the heart, which is being heavily taxed during snow shoveling. •Avoid drinking alcohol. Alcohol can constrict blood vessels, which creates back pressure on the heart. Drink-ing before snow shoveling is not safe. •Make sure to stretch. You need to stretch before and after shoveling snow so you don't strain or injure your back, especially when the snow is heavy and wet.
'If you don't know you may be at risk for heart disease, you should pay attention to some red flags, such as chest pain, discomfort or nausea when you exert yourself, shortness of breath or severe fatigue. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should check with your phy-sician before shoveling snow,' says Dr. Sitafalwalla.” Sister Ann Marie
