The FREE Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) registration process for children born in the year 2016 will not begin until February 2020.

The Scouts of St. Charles Church will be collect-ing items in the following 5 categories in an effort to support underserved children here on Staten Island. A collection box will be located in the vestibule of the church on the weekends of Feb-ruary 15th and 16th and February 22nd and 23rd. Suggested items: new packaged underwear, shirts, and socks, winter hats and gloves. These items will be delivered to the Staten Island Giv-ing Circle who in turn will distribute them to children ranging in age from 5 - 13. These are such basic items that we may often take for granted, but the need is real for far too many children. Thank you for your support.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

FATHER FLANAGAN-SERVANT OF GOD… Usually every morning while I am shaving, I listen to the news on CBS radio. Almost every day it seems that there is a commercial from a law firm that poses the question, “Have you ever been abused by a member of the clergy?” Then one of the lawyers goes on to describe his encounter as a young man with a priest who abused him. Certainly, it’s a little bit discouraging to hear something like this early in the morn-ing. Of course, not only Catholic priests are guilty of abuse, but we seem to hear mostly about them. Per-haps that’s because a priest is held to a very high standard. With all the scandals in the clergy, it is very easy to forget that there are now and have been in the past, saintly priests who have set a wonderful exam-ple for young people and who indeed were role models. One such person whose cause is now being opened for canonization, was a priest by the name of Fa-ther Edward Flanagan. Maybe some of you have heard of him. Father Flanagan was the founder of Boys Town in Nebraska. If you like old movies like I do, there is a great old film, “Boys Town” starring Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney which chronicles the life of this very zealous priest. Father Flanagan was born in Ireland in 1886 the eighth of eleven children. He came to the United States and even studied here at our New York Archdiocesan Seminary in Yonkers, New York, but it didn’t work out-his health was not up to all the work and studies. Eventually, his family moved out to the West-to Nebraska and Father Flanagan went with them. He was ordained a priest on July 26, 1912 for the Diocese of Omaha. He was first assigned to a parish in a rural area and then later on, to the city of Omaha where he witnessed first hand the plight of many destitute men who had no place to go. Father Flanagan was not one to “sit on his hands” as they say. He did something about the homeless men and started a “hotel” - some-place where they could stay and have a meal. After discussions with many of the homeless men who were so broken, the priest realized that the “brokenness” in their lives started when they were young boys. Five years after his ordination, Father Flanagan opened his first home for boys, the seed for what was eventually to become Boys Town. In 1921, he moved his operation to a farm ten miles west of Omaha and the home grew until his “city of little men” offi-cially became known as “Boys Town.” Unusual for the times, he accepted boys of any race or religion. He was a kind, compassionate and deeply spiritual priest who loved children. One of Father Flana-gan’s famous sayings was: “There is no such thing as a bad boy.” Many of the boys who came to him were neglected and abused by their parents and grew up in terrible circumstances. Father Flanagan never gave up hope for any one of these boys and thus that motto. Although he died in 1948, this priest’s good work still continues to this very day at Boys Town and now Girls Town as well. One day at Boys Town as the story goes, Father Flanagan saw a boy carrying another smaller child on his shoulders up the stairs. When he told the boy that it was too much for him, he turned to the priest and said “He’s not heavy Father-he’s my brother!” Words later on put into a song. Those words exemplify very well the charity and kindness that we need today with our young people--something that Father Flana-gan realized one hundred years ago! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
