Many dioceses right here in the United States do not have enough priests and trained lay ministers to serve their parishes. These dioceses are known as home missions. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal, which will take place this weekend in the second collection, supports these dioceses by funding essential ministries, including seminary education and lay ministry training. Please be generous in this appeal and share your resources to strengthen the Church at home.

CALLING ALL MEN

Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. Matthew 2:14

Hello men of St. Bernard & Ascension,

In last week’s column, I noted that when God came to live among us in Jesus, He chose to live in a family with Joseph and Mary. Joseph was the protector of that fami-ly. When Herod sought to kill his son, Joseph arose in the night at the angel’s command and protected Jesus and Mary by embarking on a long and difficult journey to Egypt.

Joseph protected and provided for his family. He is a model for all men. He is alive in Heaven and wants to help us; a powerful friend who has the title of the “Protector of the Church.”

I am calling all men of our parishes to deepen your role as a protector and provider for your family and for our parish family. One way to do this is through leading us in prayer. Last week I announced a 1st Saturday 8am Mass at Ascension May through July and at St. Bernard August through October. There will be 2 intentions for these Masses: (1) for the strengthening of families at our parishes and (2) that our new combined faith formation program will serve to strengthen our families.

We all know that the majority of liturgical roles are filled by women. It’s great that women are involved, gifted and generous. God hasn’t cheated men when it comes to gifts—so I am giving men the opportunity/challenge to fill all the roles for this Mass. Men from either parish can fill roles at either parish. I need men to sign up for the following roles for each Mass (training provided):

Sacristan (1): arrive no later than 7:10am & stay 5 minutes after Mass to clean up

Eucharistic Adorer (1): arrive no later than 7:20am (Adoration 7:25am—8am)

Rosary Leader (1): arrive no later than 7:20am (Rosary begins at 7:30am)

Greeters (2): arrive no later than 7:45am

Mass Server (2): arrive no later than 7:45am

Mass Reader (1): arrive no later than 7:45am

Please email/call Cheryl Coyle ([email protected] 952.412.9557) to schedule yourself for any of these roles for any of the 6 Masses. Any roles unfilled will either not occur (i.e. adoration, rosary, greeter) or I will need to cover (i.e. sacristan, Mass reader, or server). Men, if you do not feel called to lead in any of these ways, still come and pray. Continued in the column to the right > > > > >

< < < < < Continued from the column on the left.

Confessions will be available from 7:30-7:50am—I got that one covered!

Yours in Joseph, Mary and Jesus,

Fr. Gregory

Would you like to serve the Lord by assisting with Mass preparation? We are in need of Sacristans (especially for the Saturday evening Mass). The roll of the Sacristan is to prepare the church environment, mark the liturgical books for the ap-propriate readings and prepare the Eucharistic vessels be-fore each liturgy. The willingness to serve behind the scenes and reverence for handling sacred vessels are nec-essary for carrying out this role. Sacristans should arrive at church 30 minutes prior to the start of Mass and will need to stay 5-10 minutes after Mass to store the Eucha-ristic vessels. Training will be provided. If you would like more information or are interested in serving in this roll, please contact Sherry Witte at 612-419-2360 or email [email protected] .
