Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church,
I have some bittersweet news to share with you today. Deacon Phillip Maroon and I were together at the Masses at Saint Nicholas Chapel last Sunday, where we spoke to the parishioners who are used to seeing him every Sunday. Hav-ing shared the news with them first, I want to write about it now for all our parishioners to know. After many years serving God's people as an ordained Deacon, Deacon Phil Maroon reached a decision to retire from the active ministry. He recently wrote to our Archbishop, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, to say that his decision is neces-sitated by his steadily declining health, which limits his ability to perform his ministry as well as he would like.
Deacon Phil has served at Saint Teresa Church for twelve years, helping both priests and people in many ways. He came to our parish after fifteen years of ministry at St. Rita's. He has been especially active at the Masses at St. Nicholas Chapel, and faithful to the Monday night Novena.
Here is part of the gracious letter that came from Cardinal Dolan, after he considered Deacon's request to retire: "I am aware that your retirement is predicated on your declining health. May God send his blessings to you as you now enjoy the fruits of your labor and find new ways to continue to serve His people. Deacons in the Archdiocese of New York have contributed so much to enhance the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. The Church in New York is most grateful to you for the past twenty-seven years of dedicated diaconal min-istry to those most in need of the Lord's compassion and love. Of course, while we can retire from an appointment, we can never retire from our vocation. So, we still count on the graces of your ministry through your example, your prayers - especially the Divine Office - and your solidarity with us in Holy Orders. I ask Jesus, through Mary, to grant you greater health and peace in the years ahead."
Change is hard. It is a bittersweet moment for everybody when someone we admire and appreciate reaches a time to make a decision like this. But Deacon Phil remains "our" Deacon, and depending on his circumstances and health, we will see how he writes this next chapter of his life. We can help him by offering some prayers for his improved health. As the Cardinal pointed out, deacons and priests can retire from their assignment - i.e., their obligations and responsibili-ties. But we remain deacons and priests all our lives. Through prayer and example, we never stop trying to help others to know the Lord Jesus and to save their souls. Deacon Phil is one of many people we have known who have been inspiring followers of Jesus - holy lay women and lay men, religious sisters and brothers, men in Holy Orders chosen by God to be deacons, priests, or bishops. We thank God for all of them, but especially today for the ministry and example and prayers of Deacon Maroon. As we say in Latin when we wish someone well for a long time to come: Ad Multos Annos!
Change can be hard, but it can also be welcome. For example, our second-grade parishioners have been eagerly preparing to receive their First Holy Communion. They were practicing very enthusiastically this week in anticipation of their big day yesterday. They were eager for change: to be welcomed on the Communion line, to experience what the adults have been enjoying, to be closer to Jesus Christ our Lord. For their continuing growth in faith, hope, and love, for their faithfulness to Sunday Mass and Holy Communion, let us pray to the Lord.
Faith and fidelity are possible, even in the midst of change. For example, the Sisters of Charity of New York are celebrating their 200 Years as a Religious Order, primarily as educators and nurses. Founded in 1817 by Staten Island-born Elizabeth Bayley Seton, the Sisters of Charity, though not as many as they used to be, continue to respond to peo-ple’s needs and to reveal the Father’s love for his children, especially for the poor. Here is a special prayer one Sister wrote for this moment in their history. I am sure that they all would be pleased if you wanted to adopt it for yourself:
God of the ages, we praise your faithful love. Christ of the now, we seek to meet your grace. Spirit of tomorrow, we trust your sustaining presence. Whatever the risk, whatever Providence provides, we stand secure in your love. In your hands is the mission of Charity. We are blessed to tend its fire. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, may your love press us forward. May Charity impel us on! Amen. Msgr. William Belford
