September 3, 2017

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, As I finish this letter on Tuesday, news programs are showing the unending rain and unprecedented flooding that is causing havoc and disruption in large areas of Texas and Louisiana. Any of us who flash back to storms that flooded our Staten Island communities just a few years ago easily recall the feelings of fear and powerlessness that happened to us. But thank God, many people came forward to rescue and encourage and restore essential services for us. Many neighbors helped one another. There were and I pray always will be many Good Samaritans here. May everyone's good deeds be rewarded by the Father of us all. Therefore, we should help others now in all the ways that we can - starting with our prayers for the protection and resilience of those many people who have had to move out of their homes and away from the floods. We offer a prayer for their swift re-turn, and for people’s ability to be patient as they will inevitably struggle to rebuild their lives. Many have lost their jobs and their income besides the security and comfort of having an apartment or a house. Families will have stress, and children will lose time in school. There will be good reasons for lamenting this disaster, and mourning for those who have died. Did you know that in the Book of Psalms in the Bible, there are more psalms of lament than any other kind? Evidently we have a right to complain! God is our Father, ands we want Him to hear our ideas, fix our problems, and make things right. Think of Psalm 3: “How many are my foes, Lord! How many rise against me! How many say about me, ‘God will not save that one.’” Look at Psalm 6: “In utter terror is my soul...all night long tears drench my bed; my couch is soaked with weeping.” Read the opening words of Psalm 22 and you think of Jesus on the cross. The psalmist says, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why so far from my call for help, from my cries of anguish?” God’s people know all too well the sadness of uncertain times, and the Book of Psalms include all those emotions—as well as relief and gratitude and trust in our God. Besides prayer, you have many choices about how to share some of your money with those who now have so many needs. Our second collection on Sunday September 17 will be for this purpose, as well as any funds we receive today or at other times. Perhaps because we are extra grateful to be spared from this hurricane's destructive display, we hope for good weather as we come to Mass this Sunday and enjoy our Labor Day weekend. This civic celebration reminds us that the dignity of working people needs to be constantly defended. Having good satisfying work to do is a wonderful gift from God. It gives us sustenance for our needs and pride in our accomplishments. On Labor Day we will have Masses at 8:30 and 12 Noon. Consider coming to Mass and Holy Communion. And even if you cannot, make your own the practical petitions of the opening prayer of the Mass: "O God, who through human labor never cease to perfect and govern the vast work of creation, listen to the supplications of your people, and grant that all men and women may find work that befits their dignity, joins them more closely to one an-other, and enables them to serve their neighbor. Through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen." As you approached either Saint Teresa Church or Saint Nicholas Chapel today, you most likely noticed bright yellow signs created to draw our attention to the crisis related to drug addictions. We are cooperating with District Attorney Michael McMa-hon and many other concerned Staten Islanders in a much-needed campaign to remind ourselves and educate everyone to recog-nize the urgent problem here among us, of a large number of people who have become addicted to all kinds of drugs. The signs proclaim: STATEN ISLANDERS AGAINST DRUG ABUSE. And here is a website to study: SIHOPE.ORG. Still loved by their families, but often hating themselves for the suffering they endure and spread, addicted family members and friends desperately need encouragement and opportunities to get well. Go to SIHOPE.ORG for information, resources and phone numbers that may help you to rescue someone's life. Ignorance is not an excuse when we can be informed about how to offer help. So many people - not all young - have died from drug abuse in our Staten Island community. Finally, important days will soon be upon us, especially our prayerful commemorations of the tragic losses of September 11, 2001. See the full column inside with details and an invitation to join us. And for all who are anxious to get back to school: this Thursday is the first day for our Saint Teresa School, which has students in grades Pre K 3 to 8. Then we start our 4:00pm to 5:30pm Tuesday afternoon Religious Education Program on September 12. Hurry to register if you haven’t done so already. Call our school at 718 448 9650; call the Religious Education Office at 718 981 2632. And everybody: please pray for all of our chil-dren and for their teachers, as they work together and do what God is calling them to accomplish at this time in their lives. Remembering that Jesus Christ is our greatest Teacher, Msgr. William Belford

ANNUAL STATEN ISLAND 9/11 MEMORIAL

Mass 7:30 Wednesday at Our Lady of Pity Church

The annual Staten Island Mass of Solemn Remem-brance commemorating the terrible events of September 11, 2001 will be held at Our Lady of Pity Church, 1616 Richmond Avenue, near Victory Boulevard, at 7:30pm on Wednesday September 6. A musical program begins at 7pm. We are all invited to attend.

Organized each year by the Staten Island Alumni Club of the University of Notre Dame, this Mass is both somber and inspiring. It gives us an opportunity to come together to pray for the souls of those who died, to pray for the consolation of their families, and to pray for protection from other acts of hatred and destruction. Previously held at Saint Peter's Church in St. George, where parking is limited, this new site at Our Lady of Pity Church is near to us and should enable more people to attend. Msgr. Edmund Whalen, Chaplain of the Notre Dame Club and Principal of Msgr. Farrell High School, will be main celebrant and homilist. This Mass includes the solemn reading of the names of our Staten Island neighbors who died in that attack.

Our own St. Teresa Parish Commemoration of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center will be made next weekend, with prayers in church at Sunday Masses and then outside at our Parish Memorial. We will also pray at 8:30 and 12 noon Masses on September 11 itself.

These Masses are important to remind us not to for-get evil events, lest they be repeated or go unchallenged by goodness. Praying together is the best way to help and memorialize people who have died in any way - because you are doing something effective and useful for them, and for yourself. Remember 9/11 prayerfully, not just casually. And keep up this good traditional practice. Check the date and make a commitment to come to Mass on the anniversary of death of others you love. or at least on the Sunday nearby, to pray for them. Ask God to have them in His care in heaven, to guide you on your life's journey, and allow you to meet them there whenever your own day of death and judgment comes.
