July 2, 2016 Year of Mercy Dear friends in the Lord: The people of Africa are joyous and faith-filled, but they also often face challenges due to poverty, the high incidence of disease, food shortages, and mi-gration. The Church in Africa journeys with people gifted with a vibrant spirituality and is a source of hope and faith. The Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa supports pastoral projects that foster last-ing peace and reconciliation in a continent often marked by division and tension. Pope Francis challenges us: “Touched by Christ’s infinite mercy, may all the faithful be signs of the reconciliation, justice and peace that God wills for...all of Africa” (April 16, 2015).

With so many people in Africa on the move, provid-ing pastoral care to meet their spiritual needs is often difficult. In Angola, this is true for migrant and refugee communities, as well as for people whose livelihoods keep them moving, such as fish-erman and truck drivers. Creating fellowship among various groups, ethnicities, and tribes is crucially important in order to avoid tribalism, dis-crimination, and racial violence. To address these needs and foster growth in the communities, and with a grant from the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa, the bishops are providing training and formation for lay leaders in every diocese. These leaders attend seminars and workshops that equip them to return to their communities to welcome immigrants and help them find a home in local parish communities. Af-ter attending a seminar, one participant expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thanks you for yet another moment of grace.” With your help, the Church in Africa can continue to play an active role in the evangelization of the world. Projects like this one care for the spiritual needs of the African people, allowing Africans to continue giving the world their vibrant expression of faith. Please give generously to the Solidarity Fund for the Church of Africa. With prayerful best wishes, I am, Faithfully in Christ,

Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York

ARE YOU REGISTERED?

From time to time people come into the Rectory asking for a document, such as a Sponsor Certifi-cate, which states that they are members in good standing of this parish. The only way we can comply with this request is if the individual is indeed, a registered member of the parish who worships here on a regular basis. Please note that although you may be registered with the CCD Office or may have made all your sacraments at St. Marys, this does not automatically mean that you are registered at the Rectory! If you would like to become a fully registered member or check to see if you are registered, please stop by or call the Rectory. If you are new to the parish, Fr. Duff would like to greet you personally!

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
