The Epiphany of the Lord La Epifanía del Señor

January 5th, 2020

Like the Magi, may we continue to follow the stars in our lives that lead us closer and closer to Jesus’ divine presence

within the holy and the ordinary.

The Epiphany of the Lord w January 6th, 2018Isa 60:1-6 w Eph 3:2-3a,5-6 w Matthew 2:1-12

Dear Parishioners,It’s hard to miss the statue of the camel in our parish’s new

créche or nativity scene. The top of the camel can even be seen from almost the back pew of the Church. Yet, the camel, like the ox and the donkey, are never mentioned in either Mat-thew’s or Luke’s infancy stories.

I never really have given it too much thought, but the cam-el’s presence – even more than one in some nativities – seems based upon a simple inference. Camels were necessary in those times as vehicles to transport the Magi over the desert to get from the east to the manger. So, of course, probably all of us just took them for granted; they obviously belong in a crèche somewhere near the Magi.

With a little symbolic imagination, however, a deeper mean-ing for the presence of the camel or camels beyond that of a literal understanding that relies solely on sheer deduction be-gins to emerge.

Recall Jesus’s words mentioned in all three synoptic Gospels: “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God” (Mt. 19:24, Mk 10:25, Lk 18:25). Then consider the Nativity scene. According to Luke’s Gospel, Jesus is born and placed in a man-ger, a feeding trough for animals, “because there was no room for them in the inn” (Lk 2:7). Matthew, while providing none of those details, implies that the star the Magi follow did not stop over a palace, like that of Herod, but simply an ordinary dwelling.

Might the presence of the camel, therefore, be a way to re-mind us of Jesus’s powerful words about the rich and the poor? Might it also help us to remember how Jesus responds when his disciples ask: “who can be saved?” His response clearly echoes the words of the angel Gabriel to Mary: “for nothing will be impossible for God” (Lk 1:37) – not this Incarnation nor our salvation, nor our ability to be transformed by grace to live according to Jesus’s vision for our world.

In his Apostolic Letter promulgated at the beginning of Advent this year, Admirabile Signum, [The Enchanting Image], Pope Francis writes that “the nativity scene has invited us to “feel” and “touch” the poverty that God’s Son took upon him-self in the Incarnation. Implicitly, it summons us to follow him along the path of humility, poverty and self-denial that leads from the manger of Bethlehem to the cross. It asks us to meet him and serve him by showing mercy to those of our brothers and sisters in greatest need.”

As we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany this weekend and enter National Migrations week and a New Year, let us gaze upon the camel and pledge, to show ever greater mercy, com-passion and charity to the poor, especially those who, like the

National Migration Week 2020 January 5th - 11th

“Promoting a Church and a World for All” For nearly fifty years the Catholic Church in the United States has celebrated National Migration Week. The theme for this year’s celebration reflects the need for Catholics to be inclusive and welcoming to all. It is a call for unity to

stand in solidarity with and care for those who are excluded and marginalized.

As pointed out on the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website, we are called to be an active Church in support of all of God’s children, for “the Church which ‘goes forth’... can move forward, boldly take the initiative, go out to others, seek those who have fallen away, stand at the crossroads and welcome the outcast” (Evangelii Gaudium, 24).

With prayers for abundant blessings during this New Year,Fr. Joe

P. Joe

Green Team Prayer:Creator God, this earth is miraculous and beautiful. Forgive our confusion and inaction as we confront the challenges of climate change. In the light of your truth, seen so clearly in the life and teaching of Jesus, help us to re-examine ourselves and our lifestyle choices and see clearly the implications of how we live on all that sus-tains life on this earth. May we follow your lead in caring for every aspect of this precious world, which you made, and love. We pray for world leaders to find new, just and radical agreements that will protect our fragile world for future generations. Throughout history you have moved people to do amazing things for the sake of their neigh-bors. Inspire us now to work together, as your people, to change priorities in the way we live, so that we build a fair and safe world for all your creation; a world where your will is done as it is in heaven. Amen.

Actions:1. Turn down the heat. Use a programmable or smart thermostat, if you have one. Keep blinds closed to help keep temperature stable inside.2. Turn down your water heater. 120º Fahrenheit is suf-ficient.3.Turn off lights and appliances when you’re not using them. 4. Buy a laptop, they take less energy to charge and run. 5. Replace lights. LED lights use up to 85 percent less energy, last up to 25 times longer and are cheaper to run. 6. Don't set your fridge and freezer temperatures lower than necessary. Guidelines recommend 35º-38º Fahren-heit for the fresh food compartment and 0º for freezers.7. Choose renewables as your energy supplier if possible.8. Look for an Energy Star symbol when buying new products. 9. Schedule a no cost energy assessment of your home.
