My friends at St. Elizabeth’s, I hope you had fun at the parish picnic last Sunday! I certainly enjoyed the beauti-ful weather, the many different activities, and the great food. It was an honor for me to be one of the pie judges this year. They were all so delicious that it was very difficult to choose a winner. I am so grateful for all the volunteers that helped make our parish picnic such a wonderful success. As I reflect on the picnic, I find myself feeling grateful for all the blessings God has bestowed on our parish, St. Elizabeth’s.

In my homily last week on the story of Lazarus and the rich man, I chal-lenged all of us with the question: who is the Lazarus who lies at our doorstep. In our fast-paced lifestyle of stressful commutes, long workdays, constant transporting of our children to various activities, running the household, and the distraction of social media, it is not easy to see the Lazarus at our door. Yet, they are all around us. Certainly, they are the poor, the homeless, and the hungry. They are also the lonely and the afraid, the unemployed, the immigrant, the unwed teenage mom, the sick and the suffering, the elderly, and the dying. They are our family members, our friends, our neighbors, our co-workers and the strangers we meet in our lives.

Poverty can come in many different forms. Some are materially poor; others are spiritually, emotionally

or physically poor. Many also experience a poverty of time with their family, friends and those they love because of work or other commitments. Like the rich man in last week’s Gospel, when we become consumed with our own good fortune, we , and I include myself, fail to see, those around us who are in need.

I’m convinced, however, that if we develop a sense of gratitude for others and to God for all of our good

fortune our eyes will be opened to see those around us through a new lens. Having an “attitude of gratitude,” by expressing our thankfulness and appreciation for the big things and the small things in life has been shown sci-entifically to not only improve our mood but also our physical health and, I would add, our spiritual health as well! With gratitude to God for all he has done for us, we are reminded to look for the Lazarus who waits at the gates of our lives. If we look closely, God sits there begging for us to notice him.

When I think of the Lazarus who lies at my door, the residents at Christian Health Care Center immedi-

ately come to mind. Some of our ministers have been bringing Eucharist faithfully to the residents at CHCC for many years. However, we are in need of more volunteers to bring Jesus after the 9AM Mass. The commitment is every other month (approximately 6 times per year) for about two hours each visit. The residents are hungry for spiritual nourishment, and are deeply grateful to receive even a small morsel of the Body of our Lord. Each en-counter is a grace-filled moment and an opportunity not only to see Christ in our brothers and sisters, but also to be Christ for them. If your heart is moving you to join this wonderful ministry, please contact me through the parish at [email protected].

Lastly, I’m deeply grateful for the ministry of our pastoral associate Jonathan Camiolo. I’ve learned much

from him over the years. He will be missed! I wish him Godspeed.

With deep gratitude for God’s blessings,

Deacon Andy

& Maryanne Comiskey

Join the Gather the Children Liturgy Team: Do you like working with children? Have you been looking for a way to become more connected to our parish? Do you like to sing? Would you like your family to learn to appreciate Sunday Mass more deeply? Consider becoming a part of the Gather the Children Sunday liturgy team.

The Gather the Children program is for children in grades K-5 and takes place during the 10:30 AM Sunday Mass. It is a special celebration of the Word of God geared to-ward children and is held in the Elizabeth Room. Adults and families like yours take turns leading the prayers and songs, proclaiming scripture, and discussing the Gospel with the children. Children return to the Church to celebrate the Eucharist with their parents.

The time commitment is minimal, occasional Sundays from 10 AM to 11:45 AM. Adults or entire families are welcome to participate as part of the volunteer team. Old-er siblings can come and help too. A breakfast meeting will be held on October 6th at 10 AM in the Elizabeth Room. To RSVP or find out more, contact Donna at [email protected].

Seniors: will be meeting this Monday, October 7th, at 12 noon, in the Elizabeth Room. All seniors are welcome!

Monthly Food Collection: Bags are being distributed this weekend for our monthly food collection. Food bank supplies are low, so please help by returning a bag of groceries next weekend. No time to shop? No worries — cash, checks or any kind of gift cards joyfully accepted. Thanks in advance.

Sacred Heart School: Do you know Word and Excel? We are in need of a volun-teer to teach at Sacred Heart School a few hours a week. You can keep your skills cur-rent and do a lot of good in a little bit of time. If you are interested, please call Arlene Bennett at 201-891-9527 or email her at [email protected] for more information.

Kidz Korner is in need of volunteers: Jesus loves the little children, and Kidz Korner brings Jesus to little children ages 2 1/2 to 5 years on Sundays during the 10:30 Mass. The commitment is easy; we follow the Wyckoff school calendar and work in teams so you don't need to be there every week. Volunteers arrive at 10:00 and leave 11:45 a.m. Please consider joining our team. It's a wonderful way to build community and share your gifts and love for Jesus and His little ones. For more infor-mation, please contact Donna at [email protected].

Angel Fund: Thanks to all who have contributed to our new total of $40,930. We still have a way to go. Please pray that we make our goal.

Overnight Adoration: Monthly Overnight Adoration is held every 2nd Friday of the month. The next Adoration will be on Friday, October 11th at 7:00pm, ending with Benediction prior to the 9:00am Mass, Saturday, October 12th.. If you are interested, contact Pat Khanjian at 201-891-3262-ext 226, [email protected].

MOVIE NIGHT: UNPLANNED: October 15, at

7pm in the Elizabeth Room. Unplanned is the inspiring

true story of one woman’s journey of transformation. All

Abby Johnson ever wanted to do was help women. As one

of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the

nation, she was involved in upwards of 22,000 abortions and coun-

seled countless women about their reproductive choices. Her pas-

sion surrounding a woman’s right to choose even led her to become

a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, fighting to enact legislation

for the cause she so deeply believed in. Until the day she saw some-

thing that changed everything, leading Abby Johnson to join her

former enemies at 40 Days For Life, and become one of the most

ardent pro-life speakers in America. (Note: R-rated parent or adult
