Dear Club 4:12 Member;

Thank you for being a part of St. Dominic’s Youth Group, Club 4:12, during the 2016/2017 year and for participating in the various activities that we have organized. Your support this year has allowed Club 4:12 to hold or participate in 12 events that ranged from greeting the trains at the Oyster Fest; Breakfast with Santa, arranged by the IHM Guild; sandwich making and shower kit assembly for the St. Dominic Parish Outreach and the Mary Brennan Inn; bowling and an Easter Egg hunt for the 10:00 Family Mass. From these activities, the 100+ members of the club have performed a combined 430+ hours of community service.

Highlights from the year include:

• Pumpkid Fest - Our best-ever attended event, where 70 club members provided 70 decorated pumpkins and 70 undecorated pump-kins plus materials to decorate to the patients of Cohen’s Children Hospital in New Hyde Park. The pumpkins were provided by Martin Viette Nurseries.

• Sandwich-making for the Mary Brennan Inn Soup Kitchen in Hempstead - 55 members and many parents made over 700 cheese sandwiches and soup for the needy.

• Madd Potter - In January, 40 members decorated mugs at the Madd Potter in Oyster Bay. We then sold the mugs after the 10 a.m. Family Mass on the Sunday before Valentine’s day. With your help we were able to raise $500 for St. Francis Heart Hospital in Roslyn.

• Easter Egg Hunt - Prior to Easter, the Club filled and hid 750 Easter eggs for the children of the 10 a.m. Family Mass and we were able to arrange a special visit from the Easter Bunny. In addition, we also filled 50 Easter baskets which were donated to the pediatric patients at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola.

• Shower Kits - In April, we assembled 100 shower kits split between our Parish’s Outreach center along with the Mary Brennan Inn. The kits contained a towel and travel size toiletry items such as soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste.

We also kicked of our Club 4:12 retreat program which was attended by 20 members of Club 4:!2. We meet over the course of a few

weeks between January and March. A team eight teens and two adults, led by Aaron Rudnet, shared experiences of the lives and their relation-ship with family, friends and Jesus. We are looking forward to continuing this program next year.

In addition to our community service hours, Club 4:12 members also performed 180 hours of service to our weekly parish mass at 5

p.m. on Sunday afternoons starting October 2nd through May 21st. During the year we had 50 teens participate by either being a lector, greeter or usher during the mass.

I was fortunate to have the help this year of Jonathan Badillo, Juliette Gagliardi, Gisele Lachman, Eve Pace, Aaron Rudnet, Noah Rudnet, Isa-bella Skvarla, John Tiberia, Mrs. Badillo, Mrs. Gagliardi, Mrs. Lachman and Mrs. Rudnet, my wife Theresa and my sister Anne Marie, which lead to more successful year then we had last. As we look forward to continue to grow the program next year, we hope to add new programs and activities, if you are interested in helping, please drop me an email at [email protected].

The programs that Club 4:12 participated in this year could not have been accomplished without the interest and support of the Priests

and Staff of the Parish of St. Dominic, the Knights of Columbus - Council #1206, and most importantly, your parents.

Your stewardship to your church and community is recognized and greatly appreciated. All the best for an enjoyable summer and we hope you continue to be involved in Club 4:12 next year.

Fondest regards, John

Dear Parishioners, On behalf of the Parish, I would like to this opportunity to thank Mr. John Skvarla, along with his family, and

all the parent volunteers, for doing such a spectacular job with the coordination of Club 4:12. Below is a letter written by John to the members of Club 4:12 which I would like to share with the you.

I believe it is a wonderful example for all of us on what it means to be an ambassador for Christ. Great job, keep up the good work!

Peace, Fr. Kevin

CENTERING PRAYER Centering Prayer is a method of silent prayer that helps open our hearts and minds to consent to God’s presence and action beyond words, thoughts, and emotions. Rooted in ancient Christian prayer practices, Centering Prayer prepares us to receive the gift of Contemplative Prayer, the awareness through faith of God within us, closer than consciousness itself. Centering Prayer meets at the Athletic Fields Library -6140 Northern Blvd Watch for the next date. If you have Questions:

Religious Freedom Victory at Supreme Court: The Supreme Court ruled decisively on June 26, in a 7-2 decision, that denying a church “an otherwise available public benefit on account of its religious status,” vio-lates the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution. The State of Missouri had prohibit-ed a Lutheran preschool from receiving public rubber-ized material made from old tires in order to resurface their playground. Chief Justice Roberts wrote, “the exclusion of Trinity Lutheran from a public benefit for which it is otherwise qualified, solely because it is a church, is odious to our Constitution and cannot stand.”

Matthew 11:28-30 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart,

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
