A WORD FROM FR. IVAN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I will continue writing about the Second Ecumenical Vatican Council. Last week we spoke
about the Constitution Dei Verbum, n the Word of God. This week I will give a brief
introduction on the Constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium, on the Sacred Liturgy.
On the 4th of December 1963 Pope Paul VI promulgated the Constitution on the Sacred
Liturgy:
Sacrosanctum Concilium 1: This sacred Council has several aims in view: it desires to impart an ever increasing vigor to the
Christian life of the faithful; to adapt more suitably to the needs of our own times those institutions which are subject to
change; to foster whatever can promote union among all who believe in Christ; to strengthen whatever can help to call the
whole of mankind into the household of the Church. The Council therefore sees particularly cogent reasons for undertaking
the reform and promotion of the liturgy.
These are the most important points that Sacrosanctum Concilium states:
Meaning of the Liturgy: Every Liturgical celebration is action of Christ the priest and his body the Church that
surpasses all others. The Eucharistic celebration is the summit of all sanctification of the faithful in Christ and the
glorification of God.
Active Participation of the faithful in the Liturgy: The council desires that all faithful should be led to full conscious
and active participation in the liturgy. A recommendation to pastors of souls follows so that they might strive to
obtain such participation of the faithful “through an adequate formation” and until this is “penetrated … by the spirit
and strength of the liturgy and become masters” (SC 14).
Renewal of the Liturgical Text and Rites: Sacrosanctum Concilium 21: In this restoration, both texts and rites should be drawn up so that they express more clearly the holy things which signify; the Christian people, as far as possible, should be enabled to understand them with ease and to take part in them fully, actively, and as befits a community. Sacrosanctum Concilium 24The texts of the Sacred Scr iptures are the source from which “the lessons are read and explained in the homily, and psalms are sung; the prayers, collects, and liturgical songs are scriptural in their inspiration and their force, and it is from the scriptures that actions and signs derive their meaning”.
Communion on Both Species are granted: The address of the liturgical renewal given by the Council, an address
that underlines the demands of a conscious and full participation on the part of the faithful, clearly places in the light
that which the theology of the sacraments defines as opus operantis. The sacraments do not only ‘confer grace, but
their very celebration disposes people very well to receive the fruit, to honor of God in a better way and to exercise
charity” as we read in the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy.
Paschal Mystery fulfilled in Jesus Christ: Passover of Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of everything prefigured in the
Jewish Passover, in which the bread does not represent anymore the freedom from the slavery of Egypt, but the
freedom from the slavery of the devil, realized in the passion, death and resurrection of the Lord, and the cup of
wine, sign of the new covenant in the blood of Jesus Christ, the entry into the promised land of the Kingdom of
God.
The Catechumenate SC 64: The catechumenate for adults, compr ising several distinct steps, is to be restored and to be taken into use at the discretion of the local ordinary. By this, means the time of the catechumenate, which is intended as a period of suitable instruction, may be sanctified by sacred rites to be celebrated at successive intervals of time. To be continued.
God bless! Wishing you a blessed Sunday.
