From the Pastor’s Desk
In a recent article in the Catholic Herald (9-20-19), spiritual writ-er, Father Ronald Rolheiser, offers the weary, disinterested or even fallen away Catholic some good advice. I was reading this article after seeing an amateur video from the 1970’s of life in Inwood in New York. Specifically, the videographer at one point filmed the throngs of people going to and leaving Good Shepherd Church for Sunday Mass. It had to be in the thousands. While I know firsthand of the decreasing numbers of people attending Mass today, there was still somewhat of a sad surprise to see a video of all those people attending Mass that we do not see today except on special occasions. The visual of people all dressed up, meeting and greeting outside church with tons of children in tow brings back much nostalgia for me and I am sure for many others. Whatever happened? I know we all could contribute an answer to that question! The article, entitled “On Faith and Religion Today” offers some helpful insights for those who have decided that religion and church have no real meaning or influence in their lives. An el-derly relative of mine once said to me after speaking about the frustration of the faith not being passed on to the young, “Thomas, why don’t you tell people that they are going to hell!” I had to gently remind her that was probably not going to gather too many young people together for more discussion. But I understood what she was trying to say, namely as another person re-marked: “Our old religious concerns never ever darken their minds.” To summarize Father Rolheiser, there are a number of counsels on faith and religion which just might attract today’s generation. Permit me to list them:
1. Search honestly. If one searches honestly, he or she will discover the truth. “All we
have to do is be honest, to not lie, to acknowledge the truth as it meets us….If we are honest we will eventually find meaning and that will lead us to where we are to go-perhaps even to a church door somewhere. But even if it doesn’t, God will still find us. The mystery of Christ is bigger than we imagine.
2. Listen to what’s deepest inside you. “Deeper than the many enticing voices you hear in the outside world is a voice inside you which like an insatiable thirst reminds you of the truth of this prayer from St. Augustine, ‘You have made us for yourself O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.’ Stay in touch with that voice.”
3. Beware of the crowd. “Crowds don’t have a mind and the energy of a crowd is often dangerous….Be true to yourself. Be the prophet who’s not afraid to be alone on the out-side. Dream. Be idealistic. Protect your soul. Don’t give it away cheaply.
4. Don’t confuse faith with churches---but don’t write off churches too quickly. Churches “have real faults—you’re not wrong about that—but they’re still the best GPS available to help you find your way to meaning. They’re a roadmap drawn up by mil-lions of explorers who have walked the road before you. You can ignore them, but the be alert to God’s gentle voice often saying, ‘Recalculating’. God will get you home, but the churches can help.
5. Don’t forget about the poor. “When you touch the poor, you are touching God….In your search, you need to get a letter of reference from the poor.”
6. Look among your contemporaries for a patron to inspire you. “Jean Vanier, Henri Nouwen, Dorothy Day, Oscar Romero, Dietrich Bohoeffer, Simone Weil, Etty Hillesum and Dag Hammarskjold—among others—They’ve all navigated your issues.”
This is a pretty good and practical list to pass on to those who are not terribly excited about being a Catholic today. Check out the full article at ronrolheiser.com.

Dear Member of the Family of the Archdiocese:
Last September, I asked Judge Barbara Jones, a much-respected former Federal Judge and prosecutor, to review, evaluate, and recommend improvements to the Archdiocese of New York’s response to the sexual abuse crisis that has been confronting our Church.
Now, after an intense year in which Judge Jones and her team have conducted an exhaustive examina-tion of our policies, procedures, and protocols, a complete review of every priest file, and held count-less hours of interviews with archdiocesan staff, including me, Judge Jones has provided me with a summary of her findings and recommendations. These were released during a press conference to-day, and, true to my promise to you for transparency, accountability, and action, I share her summary of findings and recommendations with you. They are posted at archny.org/JudgeJones.
As you will see, Judge Jones states that, “the Archdiocese has complied with the Charter in all material respects. It has faithfully followed its policies and procedures and responded appropriately to abuse complaints, and is committed to supporting victim-survivors of abuse.” and that she has “confirmed that no Archdiocesan priest or deacon against whom there is a substantiated complaint of abuse of a minor is in ministry today.”
Judge Jones also makes some thoughtful recommendations, including that we expand our formal re-porting protocol with the ten New York-area District Attorneys to cover allegations of sexual abuse of non-consenting adults, that we conduct annual child protection training, that we continue to compen-sate victim-survivors through the Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program, and that we undertake a number of technological enhancements to ensure protocols are always followed. A number of these recommendations are already in the process of being implemented, and I can assure you that the others will soon be as well.
I’d like to express my sincere gratitude not only to Judge Jones and her team for the weeks and months of hard work they have devoted to this important task, but also to you, God’s people of this Archdiocese, for your willingness to allow me to work to regain your trust. It is my hope and prayer that the release of these findings and recommendations will be a big step forward in that process.
With prayerful best wishes, I am, Faithfully in Christ, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York
