Considering Wisdom
(Ecclesiastes 2:12-17; I Corinthians 2:1-13)
The preacher in Ecclesiastes sets up the second chapter with this unsettling proverb, “For in much wisdom is much vexation, and
he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.” This is another one of those truths that cannot be denied in our experience of life.
Once we know something, we know it. With that knowledge comes wisdom and an ability to see what we could not see before.
This is not speaking against wisdom or education. It is however telling us that with knowledge comes the burden of responsibility.
He goes on to say that wisdom is better than foolishness. However, he also notices that one of the differences between the wise
and the foolish is that the wise know what is happening to them and the foolish are groping around in the dark. The result was
that he hated life (2:17) because it was just ridiculous. He does come around by the end of the chapter to say that it is a good thing
for us to find enjoyment in our work and to continue to seek wisdom.
When we get to the New Testament, there is still a strong element of the wisdom of God present. The book of James is very much
presented as a form of wisdom literature, as is the Sermon on the Mount. What has changed is that we are no longer seeking wis-
dom for wisdom’s sake. We are the beneficiaries of the wisdom of God, which looks foolish to the world.
When Paul tells the Corinthians that he was not coming to them with “lofty words or wisdom” he was not saying that he was not a
good public speaker or writer. It is difficult to believe that the same man that penned Romans would have a hard time making an
eloquent argument.
He was, rather, telling them that the wisdom he presented was of a different nature and source than what they would hear from
philosophers and preachers (this word is not limited to Christian messengers) of the day. His message was, indeed, foolish accord-
ing to many.
God became man.
Christ, the anointed, was crucified.
We are to follow a “hero” who was humble and humbled on a cross.
Christ was resurrected from the dead.
Christ, not a philosophy or approach to life, is our wisdom.
Our faith does not rest in our wisdom, but the power of God.
There is the promise of being made righteous and holy and brought back into relationship with God. There is no promise of how
that might affect our lives – for good or ill – on earth. We have lived in such times recently that it has not taken much “wisdom
from above” to get along just fine. This has not always been the case, and it could still change for us.
We are not called to prosper or to be persecuted. We are not called to promise to make lives better or worse. We are called to be
about the business of God in whatever circumstances we are in – and to stay faithful. May God grant us wisdom.
WELCOME
Please fill out the information sheet found in the maroon binder at the end of your pew.
*An attended nursery is provided during worship assembly.
*Communion—We celebrate the resurrection of our Lord every Sunday (“first day of the week”) through a time of communion known as the Lord’s Supper. The “unleavened bread” represents His body and the “fruit of the vine” (cup of grape juice) represents His blood shed on the cross. As our guest, you are welcome to participate, though you are not required to do so. *Giving– We are challenged to be good stewards of God’s blessings by supporting the various minis-
tries of the church through a weekly collection that is taken during our worship time. You are wel-come to give, but please do not feel as though you must.
