Welcome to our church family, and to the St George’s Annual Guide! We want to help everyone get connected, so that we all feel we belong. The first connection to make is with Jesus himself, so if you are asking questions about God and your direction in life, then the best place to start is with Alpha. If you want to find a place in the St George’s family, then join a Network and a Small Group- this is where we Share Life- developing honest relationships and sharing the life and love of God together. This year we are encouraging EVERYONE to join a Network; so, now is an exciting time to be joining St George’s! This Guide (and the Foyer) tells you what Networks are available, and how to join one. The Sunday programme which lists all this term’s services is in the Church foyer. I hope you will soon feel a part of our family, and that together we can Share Life and Love Leeds- making a real difference in our city.

St George’s is a large Church. How can I get involved?

Welcome card The easiest way to connect is to fill out a welcome card. Welcome packs and cards are available at the back of church on the welcome desk. If you have any questions about St G’s you can email [email protected] or use the contact details at the back of this guide (page 26-29).

The Alpha Course Twice a year we run the Alpha Course, an introduction to the Christian faith (see page 13). Many people nationwide have found this an enjoyable and life-changing way to explore Christianity. It’s also a great way to get to know St George’s more and find your place.

Networks Networks exist to help us Share Life and Love Leeds. Joining a Network will help you get to know a group of people better and be an active part of our church. Networks also include small groups where people meet to study the Bible, pray and support each other. Details of our Networks are on pages 6-11. You can get to know a Network by popping along to an event and then talking to the leader about joining. For more details about Networks contact [email protected] or contact a Network leader directly.

Get involved A great way to feel at home in St George’s is to serve on one of our teams (see page 18-19). Find something that you’re passionate about, or where you’d like to learn more, then get in touch with the ministry leader.

What is a Network?

...A place to belong Networks are the gatherings that enable you to get to know people and where you can find your place within the larger family of St George’s. Each Network has some connecting factor that links people together whether it’s the area within which people live, the language they speak, the life stage they’re at or the sport they enjoy! ...A place to share life Each Network seeks to provide opportunities to gather and enjoy fellowship together. They meet at different times and in different places depending upon the group. ...A place of mission Each Network seeks to Love Leeds in the particular way that God has called them to, and to be a welcoming place in which to invite others who don’t know Christ.

Small Groups Within each Network there are a number of Small Groups that meet weekly to share life and grow as disciples together. These groups provide the opportunity to study God’s word together, to pray for one another and to share honestly with one another the challenges and encouragements that living day by day as children of God brings. Going along to a Network event gives you the opportunity to meet a number of Small Groups and work out which might be the best one for you. Joanna Pearson is Associate Rector and heads up all of our work with Small Groups and Networks.

0-11s EXPLORERS

Explorers are the children aged 0-11, and parents and carers in the family of St George’s. We hunt for God’s treasure each week, to enjoy, remember and give it away! On Sundays we love to tell God’s story from the Bible and share our own on the ‘hot seat’. We are learning that one of the ways to show our love for Jesus is to give generously to people who have little, so they can feel just how much Jesus cares for them. On Tuesday mornings at Play and Pray our 0-5s have lots of fun with messy play and singing songs while parents have time to relax, join in and meet other parents over coffee and cakes. Watch out for Holiday Club this Easter 3-5 April 2012!

Sunday Explorers meet from 10.20am in the Church Centre. Tuesdays Play & Pray meet from 9.30am in the Church Centre Contact: [email protected] (0-11s) [email protected] (0-5s) If you are interested in getting involved with our 0-11s team see Page 18

FARSI GROUP

By God’s grace St George’s has a thriving group of Farsi speakers. On Wednesday evenings (5.30-8pm, Church Centre) we meet together to share in worship, teaching and prayer, and sometimes we have a meal. There are separate activities for children. On Sunday afternoons we have a more focused, in-depth Bible study. Some of us also try to attend one of the Sunday English services, even if we don’t yet have good English, and to take part in other church activities such as serving coffee after the Sunday services. Each year we host several events which set out the Christian message in a way that is easy to invite others along to. Contemporary Carols Contemporary Carols will take place on 27 November at 10.30am, 5 and 7.30pm in church. This event combines contemporary live music with new versions of carols and an accessible presentation of Christianity. Carols by Candlelight The Carols by Candlelight service, featuring the St George’s Worship Ministry Choir, takes place on 18 December at 5 and 7.30pm. Expect traditional carols and a fantastic Christmas atmosphere. A chance to sing those descants and hear a Christmas message.

The Gospel According to... Feb 4 & 5 (details TBC) Last year nearly a thousand people came to The Gospel According to Coldplay to hear more about the connections between faith and music. Watch out for details of the 2012 event, scheduled for 4 & 5 February. Last year guests watched live performances of Coldplay songs, over a drink and snacks, with informal chats during the interval to question the Gospel.

THE MEANING OF LIFE IS _ _ _ _ _

Alpha offers an exciting opportunity for people to explore what Christianity is all about. Who is this person Jesus? Did he really rise from the dead? What difference does it make to me if he did?

We share a simple meal together, enjoy getting to know new people, hear a talk about some aspect of faith and then have the opportunity to ask any question we like. The setting is informal and relaxed and is open to anyone.

There will be two launch events, one on Wednesday 5 October, and the other on Monday 10 October. The course begins on Wednesday 12 October and runs for ten weeks. You can book places for you and your friends by contacting the Church Office, picking up a registration form in the foyer or via the website: www.stgeorgesleeds.org.uk/alpha

SUNDAY SERVICES

Sunday services are a focal point of life at St George’s when we meet together to meet with God. Pick up a Term Programme in the foyer for a detailed outline of this term’s services.

10.30am An informal service of worship, Bible teaching and prayer ministry for all ages. Communion is celebrated once a month. Coffee and refreshments are served in the Community Room at the end of the service. Explorers, for children aged 0-11 , begins at 10.20am in the Church Centre, see page 8 for more details. Some Roots cells, for young people aged 11-14, also meet during the morning service, see page 9 for more details. Look out for In Church First services (ICF) when the children will be joining the adults at the start of the service before leaving to go to their groups, and Pick & Mix services which occur about every two months and are a great opportunity for the whole church family to come together for worship and activities across the age range (both detailed on the Term Programme).

5pm & 7.30pm The two evening services will start again on September 25 2011. They are informal services of worship, Bible teaching and prayer ministry. Communion is celebrated once a month. Coffee and refreshments are served in the Community Room in between the two services. These services adopt a more contemporary style of worship and the 7.30pm service has a slightly longer period of prayer and ministry at the end of the service.

6.30pm, Summer Evening Services Over the summer the two evening services come together to meet at 6.30pm.

Loop System Turn your hearing aid to the ‘T’ position and sit in the central seating area to access our loop system on Sundays.

SPECIAL OCCASIONS & PASTORAL CARE

Weddings For information on getting married at

St George’s and details of our marriage preparation courses contact: Ja-

[email protected]

Marriage A strong, loving and lifelong relationship takes effort and dedication. Each year we run a marriage course to help couples grow closer and build healthy relationships. We have hosted a Valentine’s Day Marriage Celebration, a chance for all married or engaged couples to join us for an evening of fun, top-tips, and dinner to celebrate marriage.

For more information contact [email protected]

For us at St George’s, sharing life includes sharing the love of God in many different ways. We seek to care for one another by listening, offering hospitality, praying with one another, serving, challenging, blessing, forgiving, and offering practical help.

Networks provide the setting in which we build friendships and share life together. But we recognise that there are times when we need additional pastoral care to cope with the challenges that life throws at us; whether that is a visit at home or in hospital, the opportunity to talk and pray with someone, practical help or longer term counselling. We encourage you to ask for support or to get someone to ask on your behalf. Contact your Network

leader or the Pastoral Team: [email protected]

a member of St George’s. You can find this online at www.stgeorgesleeds.org.uk/dailybiblereadings – (why not set this as your homepage to remind you?). Printed guides are also available at the back of church.

6:45am LEADERSHIP COURSE Are you up for the challenge of leadership? Are you already leading at home, at work, or in church? Is God calling you to lead a Network or Small Group? Whether you have been leading for years or are just wanting to explore what Christian leadership looks like, this is a great opportunity to look further at what leadership means and how we grow as leaders shaped by Christ. The course begins on 2 November, runs

for 6 weeks until 7 December starting at 6.45am (yes am – this is not for the faint hearted!) and finished by 8am. There will be coffee and croissants provided to help you make it through! To register, contact [email protected]

Israel / Palestine Focus

During 2011-12 St George’s has the Israel/Palestine issue as one of its focuses. In the focus we aim to:

Raise awareness of the Israel/Palestine issue and of the plight of Christians in Palestine

Enable people to understand some of the complexities of the Israel / Palestine situation – things are not black and white

Engage with the Jewish and Muslim communities in Leeds

Enable Christians to realise that there are areas where extending God’s kingdom involves political action.

The St George’s Prayer for Israel / Palestine To Him who created the universe and who chose to reveal Himself through the people of Israel; To Him who created mankind and who chose to reveal Himself by being born in humility in Bethlehem; We pray for the people of Israel and Palestine. We pray that people on both sides may understand the pain and the fear felt by the other; That each may see the image of God in one another; and that each may be driven by a desire for justice and peace. We ask this in the name of Him who died and rose again in the city of Jerusalem. Amen.

During 2011/2 a group from St George’s will be visiting Israel/Palestine and some will be accompanying members of the Jewish community on a visit to Auschwitz.

The Church will be organising various events including:

The showing of the film, Little Town of Bethlehem. The film shows how a Jew from Israel and a Christian and a Muslim from Palestine renounced violence for the path of peace.

Feedback on the church pilgrimage and on the visit to Auschwitz. An evening with Gilad Amit, the Israeli representative in Leeds.

Looking at the Kairos document written by Palestinian Christians, and deciding what St George’s can do in response.

“The relations between Israeli Jews and Palestinians will not change until both societies go through a major socio-psychological transformation.” Professor Daniel Bar-Tal, Tel Aviv University.

ACTIVITIES As well as Networks, Small Groups and opportunities to serve at St George’s, there are also a number of social groups and activities that go on throughout the year...here are a few!

WALKING GROUP Have fun getting to know others who go to church and also share a love of the outdoors. Walking is a great way to chat, as long as the hills are not too steep!! The walking group meets for a walk on the 2nd Saturday in each month. Usually we’ll walk in the Yorkshire Dales or Moors and our starting point will be under an hour’s drive from Leeds- although in the Summer months we might go a little further afield. To join in pick up a Walking Group leaflet with future times and dates. Contact: Alison: [email protected] Rachael: [email protected]

CRICKET St George’s Cricket team formed over thirty years ago in 1976 when the married men of the church challenged the bachelors to a game, and has been running ever since. In that time over 700 people have played for us. We have a new pavilion at Harewood, a great ground with an ever improving pitch. We now play all through the summer including friendly fixtures and a Wednesday evening cup competition. We have players over 40 and not enough under 30 and a wide range of ability, even some who can play cricket! Contact: Tony Sheppard: [email protected]

A QUIET PLACE This group focuses on meditative / contemplative prayer and meets on the 3rd Monday of

each month in the Church Centre at 7.45. Contact: Elsie Haith: [email protected]

MEN’S MINISTRY This is all about discipleship: making time for getting together and deepening friendships on both a formal monthly basis and more informally.

The Saturday morning breakfasts are an opportunity for spiritual challenge, accountability and making and developing friendships. They encompass a 10 minute talk and a 30 minute discussion on topics relevant to Christian men in contemporary society. We run an open forum on Facebook, search for ‘St George’s Men’s Ministry’. All men are welcome to join. We would really welcome your ideas for future events activi-ties and speakers - so get in touch!

organised on Tuesday nights by guys from St George's. We currently play at 10pm on the astro-turf

pitches at Goals in Kirkstall, just five minutes from the City centre. We welcome any guys who want to take

part and we can often organise lifts if needed. Look up the group ‘Tuesday Night Football’ on

NEW WINE Each year St George’s is involved with New Wine summer festival. The 2012 North and East festival will take place from 28 July to 3 August in Newark. New Wine has proved to be inspiring, equipping and a great chance to get to know each other better. Group work with children and young people is highly recommended. Come along to camp for the whole week, join one of the teams and come for free, or pop down as a half-week or day delegate. More details at: www.newwine.org
