5th Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Mark Church February 10, 2013

Pastor’s Corner

Everyone has a “fishing story” to tell. Here is another. “One perfect Sunday morning, Fr. Hookum, an avid fisherman and owner of many fishing trophies, couldn’t resist the temptation to sneak off to his favorite fishing hole. He called a neighboring par-ish, pretending to be sick, and got his Masses covered. Fr. Hookum hadn’t been on the water 5 minutes before he snagged a fish that bent his pole almost to breaking. After he struggled through a half-hour battle, he finally landed it - the big-gest fish he had ever seen, and certainly one that would break the world record. Observing from heaven, St. Peter turned to God and asked, “Why reward this priest with such a fine catch? He lied. He let down his congregation.” God smiled at St. Peter. “I’m punish-ing him. Whose he going to be able to tell?” In today’s Gospel, Peter has a fishing story he can tell everyone about. This Tuesday, February 12th, is our 3rd Annual “Fat Tuesday” Social from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in the Parish Hall. On the eve of Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of the Lenten Season, this evening social will give us all one last opportunity to celebrate each other before we enter the special Penitential Season of Lent. It will be a pot- luck event so please bring a dish to share with 6 - 8 people. Once again we will have a dessert contest. Please “make” your own favorite dessert. They will be judged, prizes awarded and then the desserts will be shared with everyone pre-sent. A great time will be had by all. All are welcome. Please come and join us. This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Season of Lent. We will be celebrating 3 Masses and 2 Ser-vices of Liturgy of Word with Ashes on this day. All the liturgies will have the distribution of Ashes. The Services and times are as follow:

6:30a.m. - Liturgy of the Word with distribution of Ashes**

8:00a.m. - Mass with Ashes 12:15p.m. - Mass with Ashes

5:30p.m. - Liturgy of the Word with distribution of Ashes** 7:00p.m. - Bi-lingual Mass with distribution of Ashes

**Liturgy of the Word services are only about one ½ hour in length. I wish to remind you of the Lenten Guidelines which are asked of all of us to be better aware of the penitential nature of the Lenten Season. Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are asked to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Cath-olics 14 years of age and older are asked abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting means partaking of only one full meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or in the evening - depending on when a person chooses to eat their main or full meal. Abstinence means that meat is not consumed (beef, pork, and yes, chicken are meat) by anyone. Of course, for medical concerns you should consult with your physician before altering your eating habits. I am often asked what about if some-one is under 14 or older than 59? I suggest that if you are able why not journey with the rest of the community on these days as a sign of our unity! I pray that this upcoming Lenten Season be a season of grace and spiritual growth for all of you.

Father Michael Rocha

FROM OUR PASTOR

Dios sonrió a San Pedro.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Many Catholics who are not active in the Church will still seek out ashes this Wednesday. Likewise, many Jews who are not otherwise observant will follow the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, with great exactness, fasting and refraining from work and entertainment. People customarily dress in white as a symbol of purity and a reminder of God’s promise that our sins will be made white as snow. While the overture to Ash Wednesday for Christians may be a festive Mardi Gras cele-bration, for Jews it is the New Year feast of Rosh Hashanah. Ten days before the Day of Atonement to God, people are expected to repair breaks in human life. These are days for offering forgiveness and seeking to repair harmed relation-ships with family, friends, or coworkers. Everyone is ex-pected to seek out someone and “clear the air” by asking for understanding for any mean words or thoughtless deeds in the past year. Perhaps the ashes you receive will be invested with deeper meaning if you follow a similar plan. This year, Rosh Hasha-nah will be September 5, and Yom Kippur September 14. A conversation with some Jewish friends or neighbors about their experience of a season of repentance may be a blessing on your Lent.

6:30am - Liturgy of the Word with distribution of Ashes**

8:00am - Mass with Ashes 12:15pm - Mass with Ashes

5:30pm - Liturgy of the Word with distribution of Ashes** 7:00pm - Bi-lingual Mass with distribution of Ashes

**Liturgy of the Word services are only about one ½ hour in length.

SAFE GUARD THE CHILDREN

PROTEGIENDO A LOS NINOS

Protect your children from accidental poisoning From fertilizer to antifreeze and medicines to makeup, poi-sonous items show up throughout our homes. By following some common-sense guidelines regarding these items, parents can help prevent kids ingesting poisonous substances by acci-dent. For instance, Store all medications — prescription and nonprescription — in a locked cabinet, far from kids’ reach. Even items that seem harmless, such as mouthwash, can be extremely dangerous if ingested in large quantities by chil-dren. Just because cabinets are up high doesn't mean kids can’t get their hands on what’s in them — they’ll climb up (using the toilet and countertops) to get to items in the medi-cine cabinet. For more tips, please visit the Household Safety section at: www.kidshealth.org. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650 or Helene Hickey at 310-821-6612.

SCHOOL NEWS

What a wonderful Catholic School Week! Commencing with our 9:00 a.m. Family Mass,

we have celebrated our parents, teachers, students and on Friday celebrated our grandparents

at our 8:00 a.m Mass.

What a gathering with grandparents flying in from out of state to grandparents who just live up the road!

They visited our children in their classrooms, visited our Library and enjoyed refreshments in the sun!

Our students received their awards for their Science projects and a sixth grader took the overall 1st prize.

Well done Isabella!

We now move into the final half of the school year and all are encouraged to apply themselves to their studies.

We will be moving into Lent and our students will be preparing spiritually for the great feast of Easter.
