THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

50 WEEKS OF PRAYER DURING OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR
I used to review Gospel lessons with one of the very best spiritual directors I ever had. Time and again I got frustrated by the demands, direction, commands, and challenges of the Gospel. Not much different from today’s scene: “Teacher, I will do what you wish me to do for you.” Easy to say, difficult to do. I’m doing my best which is always lacking. I’m at wit’s end. It’s too difficult. Isn’t there some escape clause in this priesthood and religious life stuff? “Mike, if the Gospel doesn’t un-nerve you, you haven’t read the Gospel” the direct but patient spir-itual director repeated to me. “Why can’t God be like Santa Claus, I tell him what I want and he delivers it?” “Remember Santa makes a list and checks it twice!” UGH…. If the Gospel doesn’t un-nerve you, you haven’t read the Gospel. How often are we un-nerved by
“yet another” act of violence on a campus or “yet another” law that challenges human life almost numb to those reports. But “yet another” loss by our favorite sports team, “another down day on Wall Street” threatens the way we live so we perk up. But the Gospel? That’s the Good News of our salvation. Believe in Jesus, cross myself with holy water, re-cite the same prayers I’ve said from my youth, say “WOW, God is great” every time I see a pretty sun-set or hear the hurrumph of the waves and I’ll be saved. That’s easy! Not so fast! The Gospel is being baptized into a way of life that demands 180°conversion from me-first-narcissism to them-first-altruism. The Gospel says love and service are synonyms; love’s antonym is selfishness. The Gospel is the cross of Christ, the one symbol that distills everything Jesus stands for; a human being utterly used up for others. That symbol is worn as jewelry or nailed on the wall as a decoration and the meaning is lost. When the voice of the world says: “The more things you have the happier you will be” the Gospel says only one thing matters; “what did you do with your power? Did you make life easier for someone who was struggling? Did you serve or did you ask to be served?” Nothing wrong with power or money. Without people with money and influence, who’d take care of the helpless poor? Nothing wrong with making money or having power. The only question is why are you driven toward it, what’s your honest motive? Schools and religious education programs demand that students and participants complete hours of “service work.” What if your kids said doing what is legitimately the work of the Gospel is the way they’d like to spend their lives? What might your reaction to that be? What is your reaction to a couple, just a couple, pro bono cases every year? Jesus, teacher, what do you wish me to do for you? Discern the answer. Listen for the voice, it’s the call of Jesus. If the Gospel doesn’t unnerve you, you’ve never truly heard it.

MASS SCHEDULE FOR THE WEEK PARISH CALENDAR
ALTAR CARE OCTOBER 23, 2015
SECOND COLLECTION INFORMATION
October 17 / 18—World Mission Sunday World Mission Sunday, organized by the Propagation of the Faith, is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church's missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice.
Annually, World Mission Sunday is celebrated on the next-to-last Sunday in October. As described by Pope John Paul II, World Mis-sion Sunday is "an important day in the life of the Church because it teaches how to give: as an offering made to God, in the Eucharistic celebration and for all the missions of the world" (see Redemptoris Missio 81).
Pope John Paul II has also spoken of the Propagation of the Faith's General Fund of support, calling this a "central fund of solidarity." In a message delivered on a recent World Mission Sunday, the Pope said: "The offerings that will be collected [on World Mission Sun-day] are destined for a common fund of solidarity distributed, in the Pope's name, by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith among the missions and missionaries of the entire world."
Thank you for supporting our mission collection this weekend.

DIACONATE ORDINATION INFO Let us rejoice with Pete and Jan Lauder - and their family!
St. Juliana parishioner Pete Lauder was ordained a permanent Deacon this Saturday, October 17th at St. Columban Church in Garden Grove. The blessings of our parish are with you, Pete and Jan, as you enter into the Diaconate!
Thank you for your ongoing monetary support and for your consistent donations of food, baby supplies and books. Your generosity has enabled Vincentians to expand services to our friends in need. We would like to share exciting news with parishioners, donors and other friends.
TWICE A MONTH “ SHOPPING” Friends in need can now shop at the Pantry twice a month. “Shopping” twice a month will help our friends offset other monthly ex-penses such as increasing rental costs in Orange County. Most pantry visitors are employed. Sadly, their income does not always keep up with increasing living costs.
NEW COMPUTER SYSTEM - “CHARITY TRACKER” St. Juliana, St. Vincent de Paul has a new database system that allows members to record activities beyond pantry visits. The system tracks special assistance that we may provide, such as paying a utility bill or assisting with Faith Formation class fees. Currently, Vincentians are using the new system to update the Christmas Food and Gift registration information so that we have accurate fam-ily data, assuring a successful Christmas program.
As the holiday season approaches, we are re-stocking Pantry shelves with items that are in short supply or have been requested. Please consider adding some of these items to your shopping list.
FOOD PANTRY NEEDS:
ITEMS THAT ARE NOT NEEDED: baked beans, green beans, pumpkin

Stop by the Pantry (adjacent to Rectory garage) any Thursday, 9:00- 11:00 a.m. or attend a meeting, second Thursday of each month, 7:15 p.m., Parish Center. Once again, St. Vincent de Paul and our friends in need appreciate your kindness and generosity.

The Liturgy of the Word for Children is an opportunity for chil-dren and parents to experience the Sunday Gospel in the envi-ronment that best facilitates learning.
We have all been “called according to his purpose…” (Romans 8:28) Each week we guide our children out of the church into their very own worship space to listen to the Word of God. We then
break open the Gospel on their own level so they can see our Lord with their own little ears and eyes. If you would like to be a part of our team or just see what we do, we invite you to our training.

CLASSROOM ASSISTANTS NEEDED We are always looking for new ways that we can meet the needs of our children during faith formation sessions. Whether you’re a parent or a high school teen, our children need the presence of positive people in their lives who can be a Catholic role model. Our children (grades 1-5) meet weekly from 6:00 to 7:15pm in the parish school.
If you are thinking about making a difference in the lives of our children by bringing the love of Christ contact Mike McHenry at 714-879-1965 or email [email protected].

Quote is from our Holy Father Pope Francis, who has challenged each of us to be better Catholics. This quote was adapted as the St. Juliana 2015-16 school motto/theme.
On October 22, 2015, Saint Juliana School Students will participate in the annu-al Jog-A-Thon challenge and fundraiser. This event promotes physical fitness for our children, while also creating a fun way to raise money for our school. The children train for this event as part of their physical fitness program, and are encouraged to run as many laps as they can!
The theme for our event this year is, “Ask Jesus what He wants from you, and BE BRAVE!” Thus, the students are asked to dedicate their laps to someone who inspires them to “Be Brave” when they feel like giving up or have a diffi-cult decision to make.
Prizes, donations, and pledges are greatly appreciated!
Please contact Katy Batty via email at [email protected] if you would like to help support this event!
Thank You to our generous 2015 Jog-A-Thon sponsor ~ St. Jude Medical Center.

We would like to thank those parishioners and friends of St. Juliana Falconieri who have made a pledge to our 2015 Pastoral Services Appeal. We have almost reached our overall goals of 500 pledges totaling $225,000. For those who have not yet made a pledge, please
prayerfully discern the opportunity and return your pledge card in the offertory basket, the mail, or parish office. Additional pledge cards are available in the church vestibule or parish office. Please contact the parish office if you have any questions or need assistance in making your pledge.
Last week, Doug and Jean Knudson went to Mexico to complete an insula-tion and drywall project sponsored by a St. Juliana parish family. The fol-lowing is a letter translated from Spanish written from the heart!
Sara's Thank You Letter: Hello, we are the Carpio family. I have two sons and one daughter. I am proud to belong to the Corazon group. Thanks to Corazon I have learned about house construction. Before this, I knew nothing about it. Now I can help others and get to know good friends. Little by little we are fixing our
home. At first, I had nothing, and we slept on the floor. Now, because I am able to swap volunteer hours for goods, we have had many blessings, including this insulation and drywall in our Cora-zon house. My sponsors, I believe that you are good people that this world needs. Even though you didn't have to help us, you gave us what we need-ed. Thank you for your love. Blessings. Sara Carpio (pictured in orange to the left)
