FIVE PLAYERS BATTLING FOR THREE SEMI-FINAL SPOTS • There is a lot at stake on Thursday as the final matches of group play will determine the semi-finalists in

the Next Gen ATP Finals. Hyeon Chung has already won Group A and is guaranteed a spot in Friday’s semi-finals. The winner between Andrey Rublev and Denis Shapovalov will qualify as the second semi-finalist in the group. Both players are 1-1 so far in Group A action. Chung looks to finish 3-0 in the group as he takes on Italian wild card Gianluigi Quinzi for the first time as professionals. Quinzi won both previous junior meetings in 2012 Milan (on clay) and in the 2013 Wimbledon final. In the third match on, Rublev and Shapovalov square off for the first time. Rublev, who earned his first ATP World Tour title in Umag, is trying to earn his 20th win of the season (19-17). The 18-year-old Shapovalov is the youngest player in the field and he advanced to his maiden SF on home soil at ATP Masters 1000 Montreal.

• In Group B action, No. 2 seed Karen Khachanov, No. 4 Borna Coric and No. 7 Daniil Medvedev are all in contention for the two semi-final spots. No. 5 Jared Donaldson has been eliminated. There are different semi-final scenarios (see below). Medvedev is 1-1 so far in group play and he takes on Donaldson (0-2) for the first time. Both players have cracked the Top 50 in the Emirates ATP Rankings this season with Medvedev reaching a career-high No. 48 on July 24 and Donaldson No. 50 on Oct. 23. Medvedev reached his first ATP World Tour final in Chennai (l. to Bautista Agut) in the opening week of the season and was a semi-finalist in Eastbourne (l. to Djokovic) prior to Wimbledon. In the other Group B match, Khachanov takes on Coric for the second time this season. In February, the Croat won 76 76 in the 1R of Rotterdam. Coric is 2-0 in group play, winning six of seven sets, while Khachanov, who is 1-1 so far, lost to countryman Daniil Medvedev in four sets in the opening match of the tournament and then beat Donaldson in straight sets on Wednesday. Khachanov has posted a career-high 26 wins this season.

10 THINGS TO WATCH IN MILAN

1) Next is Now: The ATP World Tour’s brightest young stars are in Milan for the inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals, a tournament 20 months in the making. The #NextGenATP campaign began at the BNP Paribas Open on March 8, 2016, shining a light on 21-and-under players in the Top 200 of the Emirates ATP Rankings. Seven of the eight men in Milan have been ranked in the Top 50 this year.

2) Tennis Re-Imagined: Matches in Milan are the Best-of-5 sets to 4 games with tiebreakers at 3-all. There will be no ads, service lets, doubles lines or line judges, with Hawk-Eye Live providing electronic officiating. Coaches may communicate with players via headsets between each set.

3) Russian Revolution: Three Russians secured spots at the Next Gen ATP Finals, led by No. 1 seed Andrey Rublev. After capturing his first title at Umag, Rublev beat Nitto ATP Finals qualifiers Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin en route to the US Open quarter-finals. Rublev, who turned 20 on October 20, became the youngest US Open quarter-finalist since Andy Roddick in 2001.

4) Full Circle: Rublev’s frequent doubles partner Karen Khachanov is seeded second. Khachanov enjoyed his first semi-final, final and title on the ATP World Tour at another inaugural event, the 2016 Chengdu Open. He reached his first quarter-final four years ago in his hometown of Moscow.

5) Medvedev’s Move: While his countrymen made breakthroughs as teenagers, Daniil Medvedev didn’t earn his first ATP World Tour win until the age of 20 at 2016 ’s-Hertogenbosch. He’s followed that up this season with eight quarter-final finishes or better, highlighted by his first final at Chennai.

6) Denis the Menace: The youngest player in the Milan field is 18-year-old record-breaker Denis Shapovalov. The Canadian upset Rafael Nadal at Montreal before becoming the youngest ATP Masters 1000 semi-finalist in series history. After reaching the US Open fourth round as a qualifier, Shapovalov became the youngest player in the Top 50 since his fellow left-hander Nadal in 2004.

7) Trendsetter: Borna Coric made his mark on tour long before #NextGenATP. Coric broke into the Top 200, Top 100 and Top 50 between July 2014 and May 2015, beating both Nadal and Andy Murray along the way. Still only 20 years old, the Croat won his first ATP title at Marrakech in April.

8) America’s Got Talent: Nine Americans born in 1996 or later have been ranked inside the Top 200, led by Next Gen ATP Finals competitor Jared Donaldson. The 21-year-old has earned 21 wins in 2017 and achieved a new career-high ranking on 10 occasions, peaking at No. 50 on October 23.

9) Chung Challenges Lee: After advancing to his first semi-final at Munich, Hyeon Chung is inching closer to another major milestone. The 21-year-old reached a career-high No. 44 on September 11, eight spots shy of the South Korean-high established by Hyung-Taik Lee on August 6, 2007.

10) Italian Underdog: Gianluigi Quinzi, 21, qualified on Sunday to join fellow former World No. 1 juniors Rublev and Coric in the field. The Italian made his tour-level debut in April at Marrakech, where Coric captured his first ATP title. Quinzi defeated Chung in the 2013 Wimbledon junior final.

Next Gen ATP Finals Day 1 – Tuesday, November 7, 2017 Page 2 of 7 www.ATPWorldTour.com

FOUR FIRST-TIME MATCHES ON OPENING DAY IN MILAN The inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals gets underway Tuesday with shorter sets, a solo chair umpire

and four first-time matches on the ATP World Tour. Italian wild card Gianluigi Quinzi begins his second tour-level event against No. 1 seed Andrey Rublev of Russia. Quinzi and Rublev each reached No. 1 and captured Grand Slam titles in the juniors, but Rublev has had more success on tour. A win over any of the seven other players in Milan would be the biggest of Quinzi’s pro career.

In other Group A action, No. 3 seed Denis Shapovalov of Canada meets No. 6 seed Hyeon

Chung of South Korea. Shapovalov is the youngest player and only teenager in the field, rising from No. 11 to No. 4 in the Emirates ATP Race to Milan after reaching the Montreal semi-finals. Chung owns the best season and career win percentage of all eight men in Milan (see chart below).

Play begins with an All-Russian Group B match between No. 2 seed Karen Khachanov and No. 7

seed Daniil Medvedev. Khachanov leads the field with 25 wins this season, but his 2017 hard-court record is 6-18. Medvedev also had an up-and-down year, highlighted by six quarter-final finishes, a semi-final run at Eastbourne and a maiden final at Chennai. However, the 21-year-old from Moscow suffered tour-level losing streaks of six and eight matches earlier this season.

No. 4 seed Borna Coric of Croatia and No. 5 seed Jared Donaldson of the USA will contest

Tuesday’s other Group B match. Coric, who turns 21 on November 14, has exceeded 20 wins in three straight seasons and defeated both Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray on two occasions. Donaldson has matched Coric with 21 victories in 2017, though he still seeks his first Top 10 win.
