HARDLY THE CHURCH TIMES SEPTEMBER 22 l98lOn the floor - No. 4

<vPortugal Strect. Kingsway. London. WC2A IHP

Tuesday, September 22, 1981

The plain truthHERE can be no doubt that whereas twosparrows could be sold for one farthing,inflation and the current economic climate

mean you would scarcely be able to find them atthat price today, although widows might.

It now seems that we should be shirking a dutynot to tell our readers that the situation today isvery different and only the intervention of theArchbishop's special envoy, Mr Terry Wogan, canensure that this knowledge is made available duringthe Government's current review of its economicresponsibilities. We believe that British history,which has in the distant and recent past includedvery many examples of the heroic service of Godand man, cannot and. will not end in just awhimper.

It would be morally - and we trust politically -

unacceptable for the Government to write off theimpact of the Social and Democratic party. If MrBaldwin were on the throne and able to seize thecoin in the fish's mouth it would be reasonable - ifnot desirable - to hope that Britain's new indust-rial base would look far more lovely in this greenand pleasant land.

* , *

It is also a fact that the people to whom theChurch of England ministers are passing through avery depressing time. We need to remember thatthe old prosperity of England rested first on theslave-trade and then on the import of cotton tothose dark satanic mills to be turned into textilegoods. To the radical right, absolute priority mustbe given to getting.the money supply (and there-fore inflation) down. Nevertheless we believe thatany Bishop whose present wife has a . formerpartner living must be gravely handicapped in hisrole as an example, symbol and pastor to the wholeChurch.

*

So the lady is iron towards very strong pressures.The policy stands. There must be a lower standard.This world-wide problem which tempts most of usto feel utterly helpless is encapsulated in theecumenical dilemma in England. How can anyonewith a real or imagined grievance be denied a gun?The first is the well-known danger of the prolifera-tion of nuclear weapons and it is also possible tocondemn the covenanting proposals. On the otherhand, hundreds of formal and thousands of infor-mal experiments are in local operation.

Those who propose to lobby the House ofCommons are essentially right -the central argu-ment cannot be faulted by economists any morethan concern for world development can be faultedethically. In a world full of horrors but alsocontaining prayers and dreams is not the questionbest left to the Bishops concerned? Or not, as thecase mav be.

On a wing and a prayer - that's what being a Chaplain in the Royal Air Farce is allabout in today's chal lenging wor ld. You've probably heard the old phrase "AngelsOne-Five". Well, that could be you.

You could be posted to such remote and exotic locations as Fulham and Gibraltar,After all, the only way to visit all the pro-Cathedrals in the Europe "Diocese" is by air'
