• The state of New Jersey requires three years of social studies education in a student’s 9-12 experience. Two years must be in American Studies and one year in World History/Culture. A fourth year of social studies is recommended, but not required.

• In Class Support- general education class co-taught by a general education and special education teacher. Students are expected to be able to master the NJ Core Curriculum with minimal accommodations and modifications to instruction/assignments provided as needed.

• *Replacement Instruction - small group instruction following the student’s goals and objectives which correspond to the NJ Grade Core Curriculum. Instruction is available in language arts/reading, math, social studies.

• *Replacement Special Class Instruction - Academic Essentials - designed specifically to assist students with greater academic, communication, and/or social challenges. The goals and objectives, while related to the NJ Core curriculum , emphasizes application of the basic academic skills, transition issues, and the acquisition of social skills. Instruction is highly individualized based on the needs of the student.

New CoursesMandarin I

➔ This first year of Mandarin course introduces students to the structure and core vocabulary of Mandarin Chinese while building awareness about various aspects of Chinese civilization and culture.

➔ This course will provide students with another option in the study of world languages and serves as another point of entry for transfer students, students who wish to pursue an additional world language, or those who have a particular interest in non Indo-European languages.

➔ Instruction will focus on each of three modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational and reflects the New Jersey Department of Education’s recommendations regarding multiple points of entry for language learners.

Spanish Linguistics

➔ Spanish Linguistics is an elective course for students who are currently enrolled in in Spanish 5, Spanish 5, Honors, Spanish 6, and AP Spanish. The students will enroll in the course in conjunction with their academic Spanish class. This course will serve as a supplemental resource for those who wish to deepen their understanding of the Spanish language and who have demonstrated an interest in the advanced study of world languages.

➔ The course will cover phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, along with language variation and dialectal differences. It will be taught in English in order to ensure that students comprehend the instruction at hand, and will in turn enrich students’ knowledge and proficiency in the Spanish language.

• The Performing Arts Academy at Hopewell Valley Central High School is designed to provide curricula focused in dance, instrumental music, vocal music, and theatre arts, along with a college preparatory program. The Academy provides a unique, nurturing, and challenging learning environment for students who display an interest and passion in having a concentration in the performing arts during their high school career.
