The Chronological Correspondence Series consists of material from theJohn Foster Dulles Papers and the Christian A. Herter Papers located at theDwight D. Eisenhower Library, Abilene, Kansas.
University Publications of America has microfilmed the collection as it isarranged at the Eisenhower Library. The series is divided into folders, and thesefolders are arranged in reverse chronological order for a given month. Thecontents of each folder are also arranged in reverse chronological order. Eachfolder contains a "document withdrawal sheet," which itemizes the documentsthat have been removed from the folder due either to national security con-siderations or privacy restrictions by the Eisenhower Library. All of the materialcurrently available has been filmed in its entirety.
John Foster Dulles Chronological Correspondence SeriesThe John Foster Dulles Chronological Correspondence Series is contained
in reels 1-12 and part of reel 13; it spans the period from December 1952 toMarch 1959. The extensive files include correspondence, memoranda, andworking papers detailing the daily and long-term functioning of the State Depart-ment and the formation and implementation of foreign policy decisions.
Christian A. Herter Chronological Correspondence SeriesThe Christian A. Herter Chronological Correspondence Series is contained
in the rest of reel 13 and reels 14-24; it spans the period from February 1957 toFebruary 1961. This series includes material from Christian A. Herter's tenureas undersecretary of state, February 1957 to March 1959, and as secretary ofstate, April 1959 to January 1961.
The series consists primarily of outgoing correspondence and memorandaof the undersecretary of state and the secretary of state and his various staffmembers, principally Max V. Krebs and Harry Stimpson, Jr. Additional materialpertains to the personnel matters of the State Department. The correspon-dence, memoranda, and working papers were utilized by the President and hisstaff in their policy formulations.
