To the following new parishioners: Alicia Ackerman and family, Dave & Irene Holland, Oscar & Mara Gardini and Simon Connaway and family. And welcome back to Dalton & Monica Sparg, former parishioners who have now returned ‘home’. We hope you will all enjoy being part of the St Dom’s family!

To all those who worked so hard to make the Golden Oldies event the success that it was: Wally Lage, who produced the show, Fr John, Pauline and Ian and Jean Matthews and all their assistants for the huge amount of work that went into decorating the hall and tables and for the great food and drinks that were served.

To all those involved in making the Christmas liturgies the blessed celebrations that they were – from the ushers, to the musicians (who led our music at both Christmas masses), and the sacristans behind the scenes.

To Fr John, who celebrated his 28

th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood on 10 January.

To Christine and Bernard Yeadon, on the birth of their grandson, Arden. Little Arden was born on New Year’s Day and is the son of Sheena and Stephen Aspinall. Congratulations to proud great granny, Nicky Mortier, too.

To Alvin and Elizabeth King on the loss of Elizabeth’s mother, Lucy Roberts. Lucy was 102 years old. May she rest in peace.

GOLDEN OLDIES 2019 by Wally Lage

The traditional luncheon for our Golden Oldies was enjoyed on Saturday 14 December in our church hall by about 120 people altogether.

This year Wally offered to put together a programme in the form of a variety concert as a treat for the senior citizens of our Parish to enjoy during the luncheon. Parishioners with musical skills were invited through the Chronicle to be a part of the show. Some volunteered and some had their arms twisted, but the 12 places filled up quickly and practices began in September 2019.

There were 12 performers in the concert each with his/her God-given talents.

Justin Butt – Leader of the musos, genuine guitarist and vocalist

Alex Merle – Our talented pianist, performer and backing vocals

Luke Davis – Drummer extraordinaire and backing

Morel Rosseau – Guitarist, singer and dancer

Tracey Gregson – Fabulous star exotic dancer and backing vocals

Taryn Cilliers – Trusty violinist and backing dancer

John Daly – Performer, dancer and impersonator

George Tyrteos – Jazz vocalist with a ‘Frank Sinatra’ style

Dave Marston – Performer and backing dancer

James Thompson – Performer and backing dancer

Fiona Campbell – Stage manager and computer music controller

Wally Lage – Producer, guitarist, vocalist and impersonator The concert had something for everyone with a 60s/70s flavour, but generally it was a good mix of music, dance and humour. From the large number of people who attended and have expressed their satisfaction and gratitude it confirms that the chosen programme was well received.

The performers were also pleased with the overall appreciation and the energy shown by the Golden Oldies when they were asked to stand and sing-a-long with them.

Wally has thrown down the gauntlet to the younger musically skilled members of the parish to produce and perform something similar in future and equal or better the standard that was set.

A SENIOR MOMENT An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back a month later to the doctor and the doctor said, “Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.”

The gentleman replied, “Oh, I haven't told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times already!”

CALLING YOUNG & OLD TO BE ALTAR SERVERS!

On Sunday, 26 January, we blessed and gave thanks for those who have dedicated themselves to the important ministry of serving at the Lord's altar. But as already covered in a previous edition of the Chronicle, serving at the altar is open to all! Nowhere is it said that the ministry should be open only to children below Confirmation age, and Catholic churches around the world even have pensioners serving.

Serving at the altar is a privileged way to draw closer to Jesus, which, in the words of Pope Francis “enables you to open yourselves to others, to journey together, to set demanding goals and to find the strength to achieve them.”

“The closer you are to the altar,” he says, “the more you will remember to speak with Jesus in daily prayer; the more you will be nourished by the Word and the body of the Lord, the better able you will be to go out to others, bringing them the gift that you have received, giving in turn with enthusiasm the joy you have received.” So what can you do? If you are a young or slightly older adult who feels called to serve in this way, we need you! Fr John and Deacon Wayne Redman will be running a training session in February for all those interested. Look out for details in the bulletin and if you would like more information, contact Wayne on 083 704 8080 or Lisa Redman on 083 385 0385.

CATECHISM 2020 – OFF TO A GOOD START!

Tuesday, 28 January saw the official start of the new Catechism year, and in an exciting change for the Grade 5 to 7 children, their new faith formation programme, known as Connect, also kicked off!

WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

The Women’s World Day of Prayer (WWDP) is a worldwide ecumenical movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer on the first Friday of March every year. WWDP brings together people of various races, cultures and churches in fellowship and understanding. In South Africa the programme is translated into eight languages.

Each year a different country writes the ‘Order of Worship’. In 2018 the writer country was Suriname, hosted for our area by the Methodist Church in Waterfall. Last year, Slovenia wrote the Order of Worship, and the day was hosted by Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Nqutu Road. This year it is the turn of our parish, St Dominic’s, to host the event and the writer country is Zimbabwe.

10am Followed by tea in the church hall

The members of the Spiritual Life Committee have been tasked with the organisation of the WWDP and is calling

on ALL the women of St Dominic’s to warmly welcome our Christian sisters and others to our parish on that day. There is a full programme of prayer, music and hymns – this same order of worship will be conducted all over the world on that day, including in some of the remotest countries in the world!

We invite all the ladies of our parish to participate in and support us in whatever way you are able to. Already on board are our excellent floral team, the Ladies Guild, the Choir and Anke’s Rosary Group. As those of you who have attended this WWDP in the past will know, there has always been a wonderful spread of refreshments for tea at the various interdenominational churches, so we too must provide the usual excellent St Dom’s hospitality. If nothing else, a plate of eats – savoury (bar sandwiches) or sweet – on the day would be more than welcome.

Contact a member of the Spiritual Life Committee if you wish to help or know more about the day. Thank you!

LITURGICAL MUSIC WORKSHOP

St Dom’s is hosting a liturgical music workshop run by Fr Scott Davidson CSsR, which is open to the Parish and all interested.

Saturday, 22nd February 2020 9:00am until 12:00pm

It will be a fun morning where we all will be given hands-on experience in planning and providing church music. We are very lucky to have Fr Scott run the workshop. Fr Scott is currently the Parish Priest of Howick Catholic

Church and is also a specialist liturgical musician and composer. He sits on both the Durban Diocese and the SACBC liturgy committees providing his expertise on sacred music. In

addition to his theological training, he has a Master’s degree from UCT focussing on Catholic sacred music. As part of his thesis, he had to compose a full Catholic mass.

Fr Scott is a Redemptorist and has held missions around the country. He also has a wacky sense of humour and his workshop should be a lot of fun!

Please email [email protected] if you would like to attend or let the Parish office know.
