Be seeke truth and doe justice The Loreto College Board, under the leadership of Chair Mrs Diane Bukowski, has an explicit strategic goal to achieve Excellence in Teaching and Learning through the provision of relevant, engaging and challenging curricular and co-curricular programs that develop higher-order thinking skills, thoughtful dispositions and particular attributes for successful student learning in the pursuit of excellence. It is pleasing therefore to see our students continuing to achieve strong Year 12 results. Last year was no exception with one third of graduates achieving OP 1 to 5 and two thirds achieving OP 1 to 10. Such results confirm Loreto’s place as a leading provider of excellent education. They affirm the hard work and commitment of the students, the professionalism and guiding care of the staff, and the loving support of parents and families. As a Catholic school in the Mary Ward tradition, we are deliberate and purposeful in our efforts to nurture and embed a rich culture of thinking because we are all called to “be seekers of Truth”. Our culture of thinking promotes critical thinking, openness to learning and holistic development. These are essential elements in any search for deeper understanding and truth. As part of this emphasis, we have this year commenced the process of accreditation as an International Thinking School. Emeritus Professor Bob Burden from the University of Exeter says this involves learning how to think, reflectively, critically and creatively, and employing these skills and techniques in the co-construction of a meaningful curriculum and associated activities. Successful outcomes will be reflected in students across a wide range of abilities demonstrating independent and co- operative learning skills, high levels of achievement, and both enjoyment and satisfaction in learning. From the Principal

This is an edited extract from the Felicity address by 2016 College

Captains, Aislind Bell and Isabelle Orazio, at the Inaugural Mass.

To begin, we would like to acknowledge the Original Custodians of this land on which we have gathered. We would also like to acknowledge the Elders, both past and present, for the work they have done and will continue to do for our community.

An integral part of our Loreto community is understanding Mary Ward’s five virtues of justice, freedom, sincerity, verity and felicity. As we focus on Felicity in 2016, it is important to explore it in depth so we can successfully embody this virtue.

While on the surface, felicity means joy, celebration, laughing with friends and being cheerful, it has a more complex meaning. The Loreto Schools of Australia’s Mission Statement describes felicity as an attitude of mind, a disposition of the heart which manifests itself in cheerfulness, good humour, joy, happiness, hope, optimism, friendliness, courtesy, positive thinking, inner peace, self-acceptance and courage.

The 2016 motto that represents this virtue is “Joy springs from an open mind and generous heart”. An open mind refers to being optimistic and accepting, not only of others but also yourself. A generous heart suggests someone who is willing to give

to others. She is selfless yet still embodies self-acceptance and self-respect. Felicity also means resisting negative qualities such as: self-pity, self-centeredness, envy, apathy and cynicism.

This year the Catholic Church is celebrating a Holy Year focusing on the theme of mercy. Pope Francis stated that, God is always presented as full of joy, especially when he pardons, and that To let go of anger, wrath, violence, and revenge are necessary conditions to living joyfully. The concept of mercy directly relates to our virtue of Felicity as it is through forgiveness and generosity that we find true happiness and peace.

To mark the beginning of the Holy Year, the Pope walks through a holy door and invites everyone else to do the same. Has anyone noticed the yellow and blue extension from the side door of our chapel? This is our Loreto holy door. We encourage you to walk through this door often, knowing that as you do so, you are asking for forgiveness and mercy, and recognizing that “Joy springs from an open mind and a generous heart”.

Inaugural Mary Ward Justice Forum– Setting Your Compass in a Digital World

The inaugural Mary Ward Justice Forum on 26 May focused on some of the

most contentious social justice issues of our digital age – bullying, pornography, sexting, addiction and violence.

An inspiring group of guest panellists spoke to an audience of 400 people to share their perspectives and offer ideas to empower our young people. They investigated the challenges facing today’s youth as they navigate relationships in a virtual world and considered digital technology in the context of personal responsibility, privacy, social media and the law. How do our young people develop and maintain their own moral compass amidst the never ending chatter and reduced levels of privacy? They are more connected than ever but the path to respectful and fulfilling relationships is far from straightforward.

The Organizing Committee were delighted with the level of support for the event and the feedback from those who attended. The choice of topic was highly relevant and the quality of the speakers ensured that the audience left not with quick, simplistic fixes but with the knowledge that open communication and adult modelling of ethical behaviour are the most powerful ways to help our young people set a clear moral compass. We hope that the Mary Ward Justice Forum will become an annual event on the College calendar.

Event Organising Committee:Sr Anne Kelly ibvm (Principal 1985-1991), Sr Helen Parer ibvm (1960), Caitlin O’Loan (Walker 1985), Leanne Wood (1979), Aislinn Healy (2010), Kathy Hedemann (past staff member), Christine Rynne (1985) (staff member), Alison Dwyer (1985), Terry Hamilton (1989) (Community Relations & Development Manager)

Guest Speakers:Robin Bailey - Master of Ceremonies (journalist with over 20 years’ experience in radio, television, corporate speaking, voice-overs and event hosting) Detective Inspector Jon Rouse - Taskforce Argos (a specialised branch of the Qld Police Service, responsible for the investigation of online child exploitation and abuse)Rebecca Sparrow - Author and Columnist (weekly columnist at Mamamia.com.au and author of 20 books) Andy Gourley - Founder and CEO of Red Frogs (a network of volunteers providing support and a positive peer presence in large gatherings of young people)

What audience members took away from the event:“Relationship and conversation are the best tools that we have in helping our students and children to navigate the digital world.”“Supporting our daughters to make sound moral judgements based on their parenting and schooling and conscience.”“Respecting the privacy and boundaries of teenagers. There is no need to demand passwords or use spyware. Make every effort to be communicative. Role model appropriate use of devices.”“Speaking to my grandchildren about their apps, not critically but with interest, and talking to them about consent and respect.”

Justice, peace and integrity of creation is integral to the life and works of the Loreto Sisters. JPIC aims to develop initiatives which inform and stimulate reflection on issues of justice, while encouraging active engagement.

The Big Sister-Little Sister program connects each new Year 7 student with her very own Year 12 Big Sister. The Year 12s help their Little Sisters find their way around the College, give recommendations for the yummiest food at the tuckshop and write notes of encouragement. The Year 7s decorate Retreat folders for their Big Sisters and send messages of support at those stressful exam times. Together, they enjoy picnics and fun activities organized by the Links Council and highly valued by both sets of sisters.

Peer Support at LoretoBuilding supportive relationships amongst students has always been a priority at Loreto as this is one of the most positive ways to promote student learning, engagement in co-curricular activities and a sense of belonging. The Big Sister-Little Sister program has been in existence for many years, while the Numeracy Club and Peer Mentor training are more recent initiatives.

Numeracy ClubTwice each week, girls mill around in great anticipation of what amazing strategy they will learn in Numeracy Club that will assist them to become great mathematical thinkers.

Numeracy Club runs for Year 7s at Loreto College with the assistance of our senior students, predominantly from Year 11 and 12. Our senior girls are trained to guide the younger students in a series of activities that enables them to practise their basic number facts, such as times tables, addition and subtraction. The girls then move on to deepen their comprehension of the interrelationship between fractions, decimals and percentages.

This comprehension of fractional numbers and operations has been shown to be the early key indicator as to success in higher level mathematics. By developing students’ understanding beyond the superficial, we can enable them to move forward into thinking truly mathematically rather than having to concentrate on the number component of mathematical problems.

The mentors gain as much from this learning experience as the younger students, deepening their own understanding as they explore ideas with the younger students.

Peer MentorsThree years ago, at the instigation of College Counsellor

Mrs Barb Davies, a peer mentor program was introduced at Loreto. A Peer Mentor is a person who has been nominated by her peers and has volunteered to be of service to her fellow students. She is trained to have the skills and confidence to respond in the best possible way

when a fellow student turns to her with a problem.

At the start of each year, a group of 16 Year 11 girls complete a two-day workshop with Mrs Davies and Ms Mary Hardie where they receive training in the skills of good listening, problem solving and supportive relationships as well as self-understanding. They are then introduced to the younger girls who can feel confident that there is someone just a little older and wiser than themselves to talk with when they have worries or are seeking advice. The Peer Mentors are also trained to know when something is too big for them to deal with and needs to be referred to an appropriate adult.

Naturally, a new badge was needed to recognize this new role! Very fittingly, the girls chose one of the four elements of the Loreto Crest, the Anchor of Hope, as the symbol to feature on their badge. Strong peer relationships and knowing there is always someone available to listen and support are vitally important if young people are to develop a sense of security and hope especially during times of difficulty and struggle.

Staff FarewellsAlan Lane-Richardson On 31 July 2015, we farewelled Mr Alan Lane-Richardson who retired after just over six years at Loreto Coorparoo. As well as teaching in the IT and Science Departments, Mr Lane-Richardson shared his enthusiasm for many other pursuits with students and colleagues. He introduced the girls to robotics, coordinated Hockey, conducted wine tastings (for staff only!) and initiated the school’s participation in the Kokoda Challenge. His commitment to this last activity is so strong that he would not leave until he had extracted firm promises from other staff to continue to train and enter Loreto teams – which they have duly done. His energy and infectious smile will be missed! We thank him for all he has done at Loreto and wish him many new adventures in what is sure to be a very active ‘retirement’.

Rosemary O’NeillWe thank and farewell Mrs Rosemary O’Neill who has been a member of the teaching staff for the past nine years working in the faculties of English, Drama and Religious Education. Mrs O’Neill has given exceptionally generous service especially through her coordination and leadership of Debating and Public Speaking. She was involved in numerous Musicals and productions as well as playing a key role in the famous Staff Acts on Mission Day. Her strong pastoral commitment to our students came to the fore when she acted as Year Coordinator for firstly Year 8 and later Year 12. Mrs O’Neill displayed a selfless commitment to her students and her profession. We will greatly miss her passion and energy and we wish her every blessing for her future beyond Loreto. While we know she is looking forward to living at a slightly slower pace, we suspect her three beautiful grandchildren will keep her quite busy!

Terryll Dowden, Claire Matheson and Helen RadvanAt the end of 2016, we also farewelled Mrs Terryll Dowden, Mrs Claire Matheson and Mrs Helen Radvan each of whom had been on special leave for one or more years. With husband Tom, Mrs Terryll Dowden is working with young seminarians in Western Australia. Mrs Claire Matheson is now living in Malaysia with children Alexandra and Brigitte and husband Simon, who has taken a position at the Australian International School in Kuala Lumpur. Mrs Helen Radvan decided to continue with her work at the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority as it prepares for the introduction of a new framework for Senior schooling to begin in 2018. We wish them well for their futures and thank them sincerely for the special contributions they each made during their years of service and generosity given to Loreto. Long may they remain as members of the wider Loreto family.

QCMF is back, bigger and better!

P&F Dance

Loreto Ensembles perform at QCMF 2015

The Queensland Catholic Schools’ and Colleges’ Music Festival has moved

into its 26th year and we are proud to announce that this year’s event will be the largest ever convened. The Festival, hosted by Villanova College from 11-14 August, will welcome over 14,200 student performances from 108 schools across Queensland and Australia, with offerings from 536 ensembles across 3 ½ days. QCMF has truly cemented its place as the largest school festival of its kind in the Asia-Pacific Region.

The success this event enjoys is in no small part due to the support it receives

from the wider Catholic Education community. Without the ongoing goodwill we receive from the schools, teachers, students, and families that have attended and participated for over a quarter of a century, a small gathering of ensembles in 1991 would not have evolved into our current-day QCMF.

QCMF is not just a music festival, it is a community. It is a special 3 ½ day period every August where we all commune through music; where we celebrate 12 months of learning, effort, and musicianship; where we celebrate all that is good in Catholic Education.

We would like to make this opportunity available to our broader Catholic Education community. If you have attended QCMF in your previous life as a student, I encourage you to come back and listen to the music our current students are producing. If you would like to give back, we would love to have you along in a volunteer capacity where you can re-live your time at QCMF and share in the celebration once again.

I look forward to seeing you here in August – it will be a fantastic weekend!

Helen Svoboda (2011) graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music at the end of 2015, with First Class Honours as well as a Conservatorium Medal for outstanding achievement. She has recently returned from playing Jazz Double Bass for six months in a Jazz Quartet on Royal Caribbean’s spectacular cruise ship Allure of the Seas in the Caribbean.

Georgia Johnson (2015) received a Beach Volleyball Scholarship at Georgia State University and will travel to the United States to continue her sporting and academic career in August 2016.

Christen O’Leary (1982) studied Drama at the University of South-East Queensland after graduation. Her mother was a speech and drama teacher and O’Leary says at university she had to forget all her mother’s instructions because she spoke too ‘properly’. In her final year, a lecturer warned her not to expect much work early in her career because of competition from taller and prettier actors. “It took me four years to get a job with the Queensland Theatre Company, and I must have played every maid’s part ever written.”

But Christen trusted in her belief that her ability to play character roles would provide longevity in her career as she got older. That belief has been validated in recent years as Christen has landed some of the most coveted female roles in theatre, including; Medea, Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing, Bombshells and Ladies in Black. In 2003, after winning several awards, playwright Matt Cameron

wrote a play specifically to showcase her talents, Ruby Moon, an Australian Gothic play. Australia Gothic Theatre features in the Loreto College Drama program in Years 10 and 12. Christen will be returning to Loreto next term to share her intimate knowledge of Ruby Moon and help the Year 12s prepare for their performance assessment.

Loreto Past Pupils’ Association

Our Past Pupils’ Bookclub continues to grow from strength to strength. Our

latest gathering, held on Monday 16 May, enjoyed hearing from Brisbane author Mary-Rose MacColl discussing her latest book - ‘Swimming Home’. Mary-Rose had the audience captivated as she not only discussed the themes within her book, but also spoke about how the original idea emerged for this touching story. She gave us wonderful insight into the process of crafting a novel. We certainly enjoyed her generosity of spirit!

Our next Past Pupils’ Bookclub will be held on Monday 22 August, coinciding with Book Week. Once again, we are very lucky to be hosting another author visit, with mother and daughter Lesley & Tammy Williams discussing ‘Not Just Black and White’. This memoir, recounting an amazing quest for social justice, shares their journey of recovering stolen wages and their determination to ensure that history is not forgotten. Please come along and encourage your own Loreto classmates to join us for this event.

President’s Message

Loreto Past Pupils’ Association Inc continues to encourage a wonderful

sense of collegiate networking amongst Loreto women. With school spirit second to none, and many new events and important initiatives underway, we are excited about the months ahead.

The LPPA welcomes every past pupil as soon as they graduate, automatically including them as members. This allows our graduates to continue the deep sense of belonging they experience at Loreto, even as they bid the campus farewell. It is our sincere hope that this sense of being part of the broader ‘circle of friends’ of Loreto Women provides strength and courage for our young alumnae as they embark on their future.

It is these traits of Loreto Women that we showcase in our Annual Spring Luncheon event each year. The strength of a woman was beautifully portrayed through Cathy Seaholme’s (Scott 1983) heart-warming story of success last year. This year, we are very pleased to announce Nikki Robinson (1987) as our guest speaker on Sunday 11 September. Nikki will share with us her experience of rising to the

National Practice Group Leader of the Clayton Utz Real Estate team and her incredible work within the Not For Profit sphere. Nikki achieves this seamlessly in conjunction with raising a family of three young women who all attend Loreto Kirribilli.

The LPPA would like to acknowledge the continuing support and commitment of all involved in the behind the scenes workings of the committee. In particular, we thank our outgoing Secretary, Catherine Reid (1980), for her wonderful contribution to the LPPA. Catherine Michael (1986) has taken up the position of Vice-President, and 2015 graduates Grea and Lauren Effeney have jumped in feet first to learn the ropes of Secretary, bringing their energy and enthusiasm to our Committee.

May we keep in our prayers those who need our support and strength, particularly those who have lost loved ones.

I shall look forward to seeing you in September.

Class of 1976The Class of 1976 recently caught up to put the finishing touches on planning their big Reunion Event. Twenty very enthusiastic ladies met for afternoon tea in April, where there was lots of talking and laughing. No surprises there! Email addresses have been collected, sometimes through the most amazing coincidences, so we hope to have a large group joining us for our big event in June. Kathryn Ash (Walker 1976)

Class of 1959A group of past pupils from the class of 1959 still meet for lunch every two months, treasuring memories and long friendships. Two members of the class, Kay Cohen (Barry) and Sheridan Cooper recently enjoyed a tour of the College. They posed in front of an enlarged photograph of the prefects of 1959 grouped around the statue of Our Lady (Kay is in the front row, far right and Sheridan in the second row, second from right) and then with the same statue which is now in front of the Administration Building. Kay and Sheridan commented, “The buildings are so impressive but perhaps more so is the lovely calm atmosphere we felt wandering around Loreto.” Past pupils are warmly invited to contact the College if you would like to take a trip down memory lane with a tour of the grounds and buildings. Please contact Terry Hamilton on 3394 9999 or email [email protected].
