History of Stollen

• The tradition of baking stollen as a christmas pastry dates all the way back the 15th century in Germany. During these times the Catholic Church didn’t allow butter and milk during Advent.

• During the reign of Pope Nikolaus V in 1450 two brothers petitioned to be allowed to use these ingredients during advent. It would take 40 years, but the Catholic Church finally let them. Stollen was also baked at the Council of Trent.

Connection to the Church

The connection of stollen to the Catholic church is that it caused the Church to lax its strict traditions during advent.

It is also representative of the Christ child wrapped in a blanket during the Nativity because of its appearance.
