31 stud ents in ye ar 11 are w orking tow ards co mp leting e ither their bronze or silver Duke of Edinb urgh's awa rd . In

July they visited the Chilterns and practised navigating, camping and walking, whilst carrying all their camping

eq uipment a nd fo od in their ruc ksac ks. Despite the rain and sod de n feet, morale wa s high and ea c h groupworked w ell as a tea m. They c omp leted their prac tise a nd afte r just a few d ays ba c k at sc hool following the sum-

me r holida y, they set off aga in, this time for the Surrey Hills, in o rde r to c arry out their assessed exp ed itions. This is

Sa m Ormond e's ac c ount of the experienc e:

The Duke o f Edinb urgh awa rd has, for yea rs, enc ourag ed stud ents to step outside o f their comfo rt zone s and d o

things that they wouldnt usually experience. Sleeping in a tent, cooking your own food and navigating in a group

are some of the ma ny things one do es on a D of E exped ition. The a wa rd helps stude nts to b ec ome more inde-

pe nde nt and und ertake ac tivities that might not be e xperienc ed o n a fam ily holiday.

9 of us set o ut on Sunda y 9th of Sep tem be r to c a rry out o ur silver expedition, along with 22 students who were do-

ing their bronze expedition. My group and I didnt arrive back at our campsite until the sun had set, much to our

c hag rin, and muc h to the de light o f our friends. Tired , angry and dishea rtened , we p itched our tents and c oo kedour food in the da rk. The next da y we a woke, c ooked our ba c on, pa c ked up our bag s (very heavy b ag s, I might

ad d) a nd set o ff. That da y we wa lked faster, our navi-

ga tion be c am e sharper, but still, we a rrived at the

c am psite after the othe r groups, much to their

am useme nt. On the third d ay, we aw oke to find that

a ba dg er had visited o ur tents overnight. Not only

had it helpe d itself to food from the tent p orches, but

it had drag ge d two ruc ksac ks out into the rain! Work-

ing a s a team, we mad e sure everyone had e nough

supp lies for the d ay's journey and despite be ing tired

and ac hing, we c oo ked our sausag es and stea med

off in rec ord time. We ad vanc ed a t a pa c e that

would sham e Olympians and arrived on time a t the

pick-up p oint where a co ac h was waiting to ta ke us

ba ck to the p romised land of wa rm be ds and proper

    food . Joy.

After a we ekend o f moa ning, groa ning and musc le

toning, we were delighted to have c ompleted o ur

expedition. It was a tough experience but I am real-

ly glad I did it! I felt rea lly proud of m yself whe n I c om-

pleted it. This completely epitomizes D of E. Its hard

while youre doing it and at times you dont enjoy it,but afterwards, you feel great and its a most reward-

    ing experienc e.

    Sa m O rmonde

Students now nee d upload the evidence they have

c ollated for the four sec tions - physica l, skills, volun-

teering a nd the e xpedition - in order to co mp lete

    their aw ard.

straight back into the game with a try of their own. The match turned into a battle of Twickenhams skill

versus Christs destructive running ability. In the second half however, Christs physicality proved to be
