31st Sunday of Ordinary Time + October 31, 2021FIRST READING—Deuteronomy 6:2-6Moses spoke to the people, saying:“Fear the LORD, your God, and keep, throughout the days of your lives, all his statutes and commandments which I enjoin on you,and thus have long life.Hear then, Israel, and be careful to observe them, that you may grow and prosper the more,in keeping with the promise of the LORD, the God of your fathers,to give you a land flowing with milk and honey.

“Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone! Therefore, you shall love the LORD, your God,with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. Take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today.”

RESPONSORIAL—Psalm 18:2-3, 3-4, 47, 51Response: I love you, Lord, my strength.

I love you, O LORD, my strength,O LORD, my rock, my fortress, my deliverer. (R.)

My God, my rock of refuge, my shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold!Praised be the LORD, I exclaim, and I am safe from my enemies. (R.)

The LORD lives! And blessed be my rock!Extolled be God my savior. You who gave great victories to your kingand showed kindness to your anointed. (R.)

SECOND READING—Hebrews 7:23-28Brothers and sisters:The levitical priests were manybecause they were prevented by death from remaining in office, but Jesus, because he remains forever, has a priesthood that does not pass away. Therefore, he is always able to save those who approach God through him, since he lives forever to make intercession for them.

It was fitting that we should have such a high priest:holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, higher than the heavens. He has no need, as did the high priests,to offer sacrifice day after day, first for his own sins and then for those of the people;he did that once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints men subject to weakness to be high priests, but the word of the oath, which was taken after the law, appoints a son, who has been made perfect forever.

GOSPEL—Mark 12:28b-34One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him,“Which is the first of all the commandments?” Jesus replied, “The first is this:Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this:You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” The scribe said to him, “Well said, teacher. You are right in saying,‘He is One and there is no other than he.’And ‘to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself’is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding,he said to him,“You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

THE NICENE CREEDI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

AN ENCOUNTER A MESSAGE FROM FATHER JAY

was blessed in my seminary life in the 1990’s to meet Dr. Scott Hahn. He opened up the Word of God for me like nobody else. He made it sound accessible, exciting and worth dedicating my life to. He became a good friend over the last few years, and I have benefited from the annual priest retreats that he offers. So, I was like a star-struck little boy recently when I got Dr. Hahn’s message inviting me to join he and his wife Kimberly at their home with one very special guest.

This special guest had the #1 download on Apple Podcasts at the start of 2021, which currently has over 20 million downloads from around the world. This podcast is about reading the Bible in a year. Yes, I had the blessing to have dinner with Fr. Mike Schmitz! The first thing I realized about Fr. Mike is that he’s smaller than me. He’s tougher and stronger than me. But what struck me most about Fr. Mike is his humble demeanor. As outgoing as he sounds in his homilies, he listens and focuses attentively on you when you talk. So here I was, in front of the man who I feel is like the modern day Fulton Sheen. He was listening to me, which made me realize I’d better watch what I’m saying because he’s actually paying attention.

He was at Franciscan University in Steubenville for a big Q&A event with Dr. Hahn, which I encourage you to watch on YouTube! The theme was “Scripture,” and over 1,000 kids attended. Standing ovations, great electricity and contact energy filled the venue as they answered questions on Scripture, life and prayer.

It reinforced my heart as a Catholic priest to see how much joy, how many kids left desiring to read Scripture and to love Jesus Christ. In this world filled with mergers, scandals and corrupt leadership, it’s good to be refreshed by somebody who is simply trying to bring Jesus to college students and the world through his creative homilies and his incredible “Bible in a Year” podcast.

There are two messages that I take from Fr. Mike Schmitz’s words: First, you matter in Jesus‘ eyes regardless of whether you feel known or loved. In Jesus‘ eyes you matter! Secondly, he says that discipline trumps inspiration; in other words, having a life in which we are committed to Jesus Christ is what sets the framework for our relationship with Jesus, and is more important than occasional feelings or inspiration.

I would love to hear your takeaway from this conference and your comments about Father Mike’s podcast, or ways we as a parish could promote reading scripture!

he middle school students of our parishes recently discussed time travel at EDGE. You might be surprised to hear that it is a real phenomena that we experience at every Mass. In this week’s second reading, the Spirit is bringing to our attention what he already taught in EDGE: Jesus is an eternal priest who gives us a way to time travel.

Jesus died once, and will never die again. Resurrection to new life is fundamentally different from resuscitation or coming back to natural life, like Lazarus (John 11:38-44), Jairus’ daughter (Mark 5:21-43), or Tabitha (Acts 9:36-42) did. All three of those individuals had the unique experience of dying twice because after they were raised they got to die again. With the new resurrection that Jesus inaugurates, death no longer has the final word. That is why the Book of Revelation can say that eventually there will be “no more death” (21:4). After we all die a natural death and are raised to new life, there is no more death for us. Jesus has already experienced this, and since he cannot die again, and since priesthood ends only at death, he also cannot stop being a priest. Jesus exercises an ongoing priestly ministry in heaven where he “lives forever to make intercession” for us. We tap into Jesus’ ongoing priestly ministry at every Mass.

Jesus died “once for all.” If his sacrifice only happened one time, then how can we say that the Mass is also the sacrifice of Jesus? Jesus does not die again at Mass. Rather, every Mass reconnects us with his “once for all” sacrifice that he is continually offering in heaven. Mass re-presents Jesus’ sacrifice; it presents it again by the ancient concept of remembrance.

When the Jewish people annually remembered the Exodus during the Passover ritual, they did not simply think back fondly about it. Rather, they believed that through the ritual they made the past events of the Exodus present again today. This is the same concept Jesus had in mind when he said to “do this in remembrance of me” (1 Corinthians 11:24). He meant that when we performed the same rituals he did at the Last Supper, we would make that event present again. What Jesus began in the Upper Room did not end until he drank sour wine (the fourth cup of the Passover ritual) on the cross and declared that his sacrifice was finished (see John 19:28-30). Mass re-presents the once and for all events of the Last Supper and the Crucifixion for us today. Mass is mystical time travel.

The Spirit is reminding us all to be aware of what is going on during Mass. I need this reminder often, and you might as well. Too often while Jesus’ once for all sacrifice is being re-presented right before me, I am busy juggling my toddler, wondering when my older girls are coming back from the bathroom, being bumped by my son, taking notice of who is around me, wondering what the Communion song will be… Far too often, I am time traveling while completely ignoring the experience. Thank God we have a high priest who can sympathize with my weaknesses.

he Lord has blessed our parish in so many ways! One of those blessings is our young families and the children they bring to us for Baptism. In the past six years, we have baptized over 1,000 children! While many of these young families are from the area and have family in town, many others are transplants who moved into the area for work and have no support system nearby. We want to be a parish that supports and grows with our young families before and after the Baptism ceremony.

We already do this in many ways. In the Beaver Valley, we have set up a system of pregnancy prayer partners. At Saints John & Paul, programs like Holy Half Hour and Summer Storytime provide year-round drop-in programs for young families. At both places, young families can register their newborns and young children for Making Music Praying Twice. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, childcare during Masses and ministries, Children’s Liturgy of the Word, Sunday School, and family social events also provide resources and supports for young families.

While that may seem like a lot already, the Holy Spirit is asking us to do even more to embrace our young families! While we want to see all initiatives for young families happen across our parish, we are specifically emphasizing the following...

In the Beaver Valley, we would like to:• Offer more drop-in programs (Holy Half Hour, Storytime, etc.) to provide year-round opportunities for young families.• Introduce Making Music Praying Twice, a music and movement class for kid ages 0-5 accompanied by an adult.

At Saints John & Paul, we would like to:• Establish prayer support for pregnant moms and expectant families.• Offer drop-in programs and programs with registration in the evening so working parents can attend.• Allow parents with young kids to attend programs instead of facilitating them.• Provide a few home-cooked meals for postpartum families with little social supports.

Dr. Joseph White has pointed out that the Church routinely fails families when they need us the most, which is after the birth of their first child when they restructure their lives around their baby while the parish stands aloof. We can be a parish that walks with our hundreds of young families when they need us the most. If you feel called to help to make this vision a reality by praying, volunteering, or donating, please reach out!

s Catholic Christians we know that November 1 is not simply the day after Halloween

or the day before All Souls Day. It is All Saints Day! It is the day we celebrate the

countless (we hope) people who are reigning with the Lord in Heaven. Some people we

have known, and many others we won’t meet until we get there ourselves. Normally

this day is a Holy Day of Obligation, but when it is a Monday, Holy Mother Church

doesn’t require us to go to Mass. But going to Mass on November 1 is still a good

idea!

So, we are going to celebrate a special 7PM Mass at Saints John & Paul in addition to

the regularly scheduled daily Masses.

It will be a little bit different. Like the Saint Joseph Mass back in March, it will be in

Latin, except for the readings and homily (it is the Mass we do every day, just in Latin).

The music will be Gregorian Chant, which the Second Vatican Council gave particular

praise to as music suited for the Catholic Mass. We will also have the altar arranged so

that the priest and people are facing the same direction. Father Jay

will be the celebrant and Father Mike is going to preach.

Please plan on coming!

ANGIE WEIGANDCommunications [email protected]

grew up attending Mass and CCD at Our Lady of Peace. I celebrated all my sacraments there: Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Holy Eucharist, Marriage; and I had close family members buried from there. It was home.

After I was married, we moved and began to attend different parishes. I found myself attending Mass—and then getting hired—at Saints John & Paul, and found a new home. Shortly after I began working at SSJP, my family moved into Economy Boro.

Three years ago, when our parishes became a grouping, my family began attending OLOP occasionally, since we lived right in the middle of the churches. When rumors began circulating about the possible closure of church buildings, we began to attend OLOP more often, “while we still could.”

At first, I was angry. I did not understand how they could consider closing OLOP. It was my first home parish, where I first encountered Jesus. I thought they were making the wrong decision and there was no way I was ever attending Mass at Good Samaritan. Then, as weeks passed, my anger subsided and I began to feel sorrow for the things I would miss... The beautiful window of Our Lady, the wooden image of the Holy Family that I sat in front of for countless Masses. I then realized that these truly are just “things,” and the Our Lady of Peace church is just a building. They are not what really matters.

One week, my family decided to try Good Samaritan, “just this once,” and to my dismay it wasn’t horrible. I was experiencing the same feeling of home as I did at Our Lady of Peace and Saints John & Paul. Why? Because home is where Jesus is. It doesn’t matter where the space is located, what the windows or images look like. As long as He is there, I am home.

Maybe you are like me and are working through your own journey of grieving. I invite you to consider the true meaning of our faith and to maybe drive to one of the other parishes in our grouping one weekend, and celebrate Mass with our brothers and sisters in Christ. In the meantime, know that the staff members and clergy team of our grouping are here for you. We want to walk with you through this process and help in any way we can.

s the holiday season approaches it can be a very stressful time for families. When

I was young, my dad’s job was transferred to Detroit. When Christmas came, my

father was unemployed and my mom was home caring for four kids under the age

of five with barely any income. I remember my great aunt, Sister Marian, coming

to our house with a carload of food that the students at Saint Francis Academy

gathered and my parents were overwhelmed. (I didn’t know about all the gifts she

hid in our basement.)

Fast forward 16 years, and I was heading up the Christmas collections at my school

(Saint Francis Academy) and delivering them to the families in need. I don’t know

what was more humbling—being the recipient, the giver, or realizing how God’s

love came full circle.

If you are facing troubles this holiday season, you don’t have to go through it alone.

If you find yourself in need of food, furniture, utility assistance or gifts we have

help available, through people’s generosity and through the Saint Vincent de Paul

Society.

the commemoration of all the faithful departed + all souls day, november 2, 2021

Loving God our Father, Your power brings us to life. Your care guides our lives, and by Your command we return to the dust from which we came.

Father, those who pass on still live in Your presence, their lives are changed but do not end. I plead in hope for my family, relatives and friends, and for all the dead known only to You.

In the company of Christ, Who died and now lives, may they find joy in Your kingdom, where all our tears are wiped away. Unite us together again as one family, to sing Your praise forever and ever. Amen.”

“I have a great love for St. Joseph, because he is a man of silence and strength. On my table, I have an

image of St. Joseph sleeping. Even when he is asleep, he is taking care of the Church! Yes! We know that he can do that. So when I have a

problem, a difficulty, I write a little note and I put it underneath St.

Joseph, so that he can dream about it! In other words, I tell him: ‘Pray for

this problem!’”—Pope Francis

Please pray for the staff on November 4 as we will be praying for the parishioners of all four parishes as we embark on the many opportunities the merger will have to offer.

holy half hour leaders neededHoly Half Hour is a way to introduce little ones to quiet prayer before Jesus in the Eucharist in an age-appropriate way. We have many young families who love this program, and we need leaders, who do not have little ones themselves, to make the program possible. The parish provides a guide for the 30-minute program, and leaders should be comfortable leading simple songs, reading stories, and interacting with young kids who are accompanied by a parent. Holy Half Hour meets every Thursday at Saints John & Paul from 10:00-10:30 AM, and we would love to offer it in the evening for working parents as well. If you are interested in leading, please contact Jason Gawaldo at [email protected].

children’s worship bulletinsWe are excited to begin providing printed Children’s Worship Bulletins in all three Beaver Valley churches! These will help kids engage more deeply with the Gospel reading during Mass. There are two bulletins, one for kids ages three and up and another for ages seven and up. You can pick up copies beside the Evangelion.

Wear your favorite flannel and join us for a laid back party that anyone in high school can come to. All teens in our grouping are invited to join us on November 7 for the Pumpkin Bash from 5 – 7 PM at Saints John & Paul. Invite your friends!

correctionPlease note that the church attendance numbers published on page four in last weeks Evangelion were incorrect. Our Great Grouping September Mass attendance was 2,307.
