A Letter from Pastor John StewardDear Friends,

Christmas is always very rich and meaningful at Mount of Olives (MOO). This newsletter is filled with exciting events happening at our church this Christmas. I hope you will take the time to explore the many events and activities that will take place. But more than that, I pray you will share this information with others, and invite them to experience Christmas with you here at MOO.

Yours because of Him,Pastor John R. Steward Senior Pastor

“I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother and your mother, and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.” II Timothy 1:5

Regardless of age, the Holidays transport us back to our childhood: the smell of turkey dinner with all the fixings, family gathered around the table, tinsel on the tree, stockings hung by the fireplace, and of course, the colorful packages around the base of the Christmas tree. For our children, the experiences of the holiday season are still being written upon their future memories. This is why we as parents need to make sure that what they remember is packaged in the precious truths about how God’s love reached out to a dying world, one silent night in a town called Bethlehem.

As the shepherds watched over their flocks, they experienced the most extraordinary gift: a Heavenly chorus of angels announcing the birth of the baby Jesus. The fact that God chose to reveal this good news to these shepherds, reminds us that God is for everyone, regardless of their social stature. Because the angels intersected the world at such a time, we are assured that God did not simply create all things and walk away. But rather, He is actively involved in our lives and is lovingly drawing the world unto himself.

So throughout November and December, look for ways to create meaningful holiday memories. Perhaps this Thanksgiving, you may want to establish the tradition of going around the table and having each person identify one thing for which they are thankful. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, as your family begins to receive Christmas cards, put them in a basket and take one out each night at dinner and pray for the person or family who sent it. On Christmas Eve, before going to bed, instead of reading The Night Before Christmas (or whatever your tradition may be), you may consider having your children take turns reading through the verses of the Christmas Story as found in Luke 2:1-20.

For our children, the experiences of the holiday season are still being written upon their future memories. Be intentional. Give your children the gift for which no gift receipt is needed.

Imagine More UpdateThe congregation voted and unanimously approved the construction of the Children’s Ministry Building on September 15, 2013.

The “construction loan” will be in place in November, preserving a low interest rate. As of this writing (mid-October), we have submitted to the City our application for project approval. The process involves obtaining a “planned development permit” through the planning commission. City staff is currently reviewing the project. There will be an opportunity for our neighbors to comment on the project prior to a public hearing which we hope will be on the December Calendar for the Planning Commission. We are planning to submit our construction drawings to the Building Department immediately thereafter. It is anticipated that we will have a subcontractor meeting in December or early January to obtain bids on the construction. It is our plan to remodel the courtyard first, then begin construction of the building. Project completion is estimated December 2014. All dates are subject to the time requirements of the City of Mission Viejo.

Please keep the project in your prayers during the Fall and Winter months. We trust that the building process will be a blessing to many MOO members who are in the construction trades.

Thank you for your support!Dave ScottBuilding Committee Chair

Ministry to Construction WorkersThe Ministry to Construction Workers (MC) will provide a means of sharing our faith in Jesus Christ with the workers on our Children’s Ministry Building jobsite. We will be ministering to the workers through friendliness, relationship building and gratitude – shown through acts of hospitality and service. It is our prayer that these actions will display Christ’s love and open the door to sharing our spiritual life with all construction workers. This is an opportunity for each of us to become missionaries right here at Mount of Olives.

Food Collection at the Show:Hunger doesn’t end in December, so we’re collecting food to help beyond Christmas into the new year. Donations needed include non-perishable comfort foods - such as hearty soups, stews, macaroni and cheese, canned pasta sauce and pasta, and boxed potato dishes.

From the Director of Music & Arts“Coming Home” this Christmas - a Place to Belong

I’m sure you’ve heard it - I know I have - that the holidays are sooooo stressful. So many demands and expectations. So much busywork and at such a crazy frenetic pace. Last minute shopping, office parties, fruitcake...boy, I’m exhausted just mentioning it.

So this Christmas we thought we’d introduce a new idea. Well, it’s actually an old idea if you think about it. Simplify this Christmas. We are encouraging everyone to buy one less Christmas sweater, go to one less holiday party, etc., and focus on the simple things, the things that matter. Reflect on your relationship with God. Spend more time with your family. Do something nice for your neighborhood to demonstrate God’s love to the world. Things like that.

We will then culminate this idea with the Christmas event “Coming Home” on December 21 and 22 at 7:00pm. We want to emphasize that Jesus came to earth to redeem us, to give us a place to belong - that with Him we ARE home. We’re praying that this simple message of Christmas not only resonates with us as a community of faith, but with anyone we are able to invite along to experience this message who may not know the love of Jesus.

We’re looking forward to enjoying the Reason for the Season with you!

From the Children’s Ministry DirectorMerry Christmas from our family to yours. We are so grateful that our children’s ministries are growing and thriving.

Kids have had many fun journeys exploring Jesus’ Parables and SOUL FOOD! They love to hear stories from the Bible and sincerely worship with all their hearts. We have also spent the past few months focusing on the “character of Jesus” asking ourselves, “What would Jesus do?”

Beginning this November, our 4th & 5th graders will do a once-a-month service project that helps our community and the people living in it. They are very excited to start these projects with their small group and want to help make a difference.

Have a beautiful Christmas full of cherished family times, love and reflection of our Greatest GIFT of all!

ROCK Thursday NightsYoung Adult Night is every week: worship and Bible study 7:00-9:00pm plus special events

In November, Rock Tuesday Nights Bible study will be diving into a message series on the book of Revelation. We will be studying this book and asking the tough questions in our Tuesday Night Small Groups. Our goal in studying the book of Revelation is to show students the Triumphant Christ, who has sealed his people as his own, that he defeats evil and is the only one worthy to be called the King of kings.

Rock Tuesday Nights wants to impact others in our commu-nity as God’s hands and feet. This Christmas instead of having a traditional Rock Christmas Party, it is our goal to help those in need. For the months of November and December we will have all our Rock Tuesday Night Small Groups bring in their spare change, allowance, donations from friends and family, etc. in order to Adopt an Angel. (See page 6 for more info.) Our goal is that every small group adopts one family, and they will work together to raise the funds to purchase gifts for families in need.

On December 17th, we will take all Small Groups to our local Target to purchase gifts for their families. We need parents to shuttle students to and from Target. If you are available, please contact Nicole Stirling. We’re excited to give students this opportunity to live out the call to serve those in need.

There are a lot of exciting events, retreats and mission opportunities happening with our middle school ministry. We hope that your student will join us!

Hello Again MOO Family! We’ve been very busy the last few months. Hailey and I (Cameron) helped to celebrate Christ’s Hope International’s 10th Anniversary this past October. Recently, Hailey has been able to spend most of her time with the children at the Ark

Ministry Carepoint in Okahandja, Namibia which she absolutely loves. We have also been able to focus on getting everything prepared to start our Rock Ministry Carepoint this January!

Just a few weeks ago we visited homes and recruited our first vulnerable children for the Rock Carepoint. It was a heavy moment for us as we drove past tiny shack after shack with no running water, electricity, or sewage. We came to a small home about the size of one of our walk in closets back home (8’x10’), and we met two young girls desperate for the Father’s love. They are 6 and 7 years old, have never seen the inside of a classroom, nor do they have birth certificates. They both were dressed in very dirty clothes with “air vents.” They did not even know how to smile when we took their picture. It was so clear that they needed the love of Christ in their lives. It truly changed my perspective as I realized how much we can change these two girls’ lives forever. By enrolling them in our Carepoint, they have the chance to get educated, receive full and healthy meals 5 days a week, and learn that they have a Creator who adores them. These and 48 more chil-dren’s lives would probably never be changed or filled with the hope of Jesus Christ if it were not for MOO’s support and obedience to the Great Commission. Thank you for sending us to start the Rock Minis-try Carepoint, we love you!

Foreign Missions Ministry Update

Hello MOO Family,A team of five from MOO returned in early August from Slovakia helping run English Bible Camps there under East European Mission Network (EEMN). We had two camps, one in Puchov and one in Vranov. The Lord blessed us with about sixty wonderful children at each camp who we ministered and witnessed to, sharing God’s love. The children, in turn, blessed us also, and immeasurably changed our lives for the better. The youth groups that assisted us in both cities were also a blessing. We were able to see lives changed as the Lord worked among the people we had the joy to be with.

THANK YOU so much for all of your prayers and financial support! The team could not have done what they did without your help. May the Lord richly bless you! If you are interested in serving with EEMN or just want more info, please contact Victor Standke at 949-254-3217 or email at [email protected].

STEPHEN MINISTRYChristmas Holidays and Openness to Care

The need for Christian care becomes more important during the Christmas holidays when many of us are separated geographically from close friends and family. We hurt from feeling alone with no one to share this joyous time of year while co-workers and neighbors are extremely happy and excited, making us hurt even more. This loneliness and hurt is heightened for those who have suffered a loss or are going through other difficulties - which many of our members and friends are encountering during these tough financial times.

This does not have to happen, because help is available. Stephen Ministers are ready to provide confidential, one-on-one Christian care. They will listen, care, encourage, pray, and support you through the holidays and as long as your need persists. So if you or someone you know is hurting, contact our Stephen Ministers: email [email protected], call Chuck Hulse at 949-433-7504, or call Julie Reed at 949-933-3877.

Guest Speaker: Lynn LeiteTopic: “Expecting the Unexpected for the Holidays”The holidays hold so many expectations for women, which can also mean disap-pointments when those expectations are not met. Lynn will speak on a the birth of our Savior, the expectations of God’s chosen people, Mary’s expectations for her future, and how that can be applied to our lives. We are never disappointed if we put our expectations in the Lord, which is a good perspective to celebrate and remember during the Christmas season. Also, wouldn’t it be great to inspire and encourage each other to be that unexpected blessing to others this Christmas? Explore Lynn’s blog: curlygirl4god.com/blog/

Tickets: $10 Complimentary tickets available for those with financial need. Childcare will be provided. For more info contact Michelle Bryant, call 949-922-8700 or email [email protected].
