CHRISTMASIN THE
P ARK
Spanish Cove ChoirThe Spanish Cove Choir has been a staple at the
Cove for quite some time, but in recent years,
its success has been established by some very special
people. Not only are we honored with the members
of the choir, who volunteer their time, but we are
blessed with those that take on the role of director.
In 2006, the year before she actually moved into
the Cove, Betty Gary started her tenure as choir
director. She led the choir with a passion and love
for music that was unmatched. She had a “Director’s
Heart,” as Shirley McDaniel described her.
After many years Betty stepped down and
former resident Loralee Cooley filled the spot and
offered her wonderful musical f lare and leadership
talents. Loralee moved out of state, then resident
Pat Schein gave us her harmonious know-how and
beautifully occupied the void. When Pat finished
her stretch, Betty Gary came out of retirement and
took the reins for the 2018 Christmas Program. All
the while Shirley McDaniel, Spanish Cove’s Hair
Stylist Extraordinaire who wears many other hats
at the Cove as well, covered all the gaps in between
and kept things running smoothly.
This brings us to this past summer when
Debbie Miller visited the new Healthy Living
OKC. While there she observed the Seniors Choir.
The Director of that choir is Jerry Piper, who
Debbie called a week later and asked if he would
be interested in directing Spanish Cove’s Choir.
The rest is history and Jerry Piper is Spanish
Cove’s new choir director. Jerry said, “I cherish
the employees and residents I’ve met at the Cove
and it is an exceptional place!” We are very pleased
Jerry has brought his expertise to directing our
choir and we feel very fortunate to have him join
the Spanish Cove Choir family. We look forward
to the rest of 2019 and what the choir has in store
for us. We hope you will check out Jerry and the
Spanish Cove Choir this Christmas, it is sure to be
“Merry and Bright!”
Executive Administrator’s Corner
Growing up, you got a good daily dose of the do’s and don’ts of life. “Do the right thing.
Do your best. Don’t steal. Don’t lie. Do unto others….” Your parents, teachers and those around you did their best to guide you so you would have an opportunity to have and Excalibur life. You learned quickly that sticking to the “do’s and don’ts” kept you from paying more painful dues. So, have you done well with your life? Are you pleased with where you are at the age you have become?
Taking measure of your life is perhaps the most respectful thing you can do to honor yourself. Honest and frequent self-reflection helps you check your personal compass to ensure you are on track in becoming the person you aspire in your heart to be. Good people ask themselves daily how they could have done something better, even when they did something good.
Aging is the tonic for fine tuning yourself. To have gray hair (or no hair in some cases), means you have had more opportunity to get things right in your life and be at peace with the world. With age, you learn the only thing which truly guides you is your conscience. The truly wise person will even know what guides his/her conscience.
Your conscience, in essence, is your life’s rudder. If you are on course, you are barely aware of it. Yet, when you have done something regrettable, bells and whistles go off until you either self-correct or decide to turn a deaf ear. Ignoring one alarm is an invitation to step into darkness. Ignoring several can get you completely misdirected and lost.
We all have differing standards for how we measure ourselves. Yours is unique to you and only you. No one else will judge your life like you do. Moreover, your standard will morph (and hopefully improve) with time as you learn new things and go through different experiences.
Each of us has the tendency to judge others according to our own standard and not theirs. In our own eyes, we are always right. Yet your judgement is not what others desire of you. “What is desirable in a man (by others) is his kindness,” (Proverbs 19:22). Only a true friend can see another’s heart.
I hope you are on track for however you are measuring your life. I pray the goodness and humility in you will be perfected so your satisfaction is complete and your days are filled with peace. Moreover, I hope you are teaching others the best “do’s” of life with your words and actions.
Sincerely, Don
MEASURING UP

Welcome New ResidentsMARY ST. JOHNMary St. John grew up with two younger brothers, Phil and
Jerry Putt in Oklahoma City. After high school graduation she
attended Oklahoma A & M and joined the Alpha Chi Omega
sorority. After two years at OSU in 1959 she married Roger
Freling and worked on campus in Agriculture Engineering. Mary
finished her undergraduate degree and worked in the Alumni
Association on campus. Upon Roger’s graduation they traveled
before moving to Moscow, Idaho where her husband had a teaching
job. They unfortunately divorced in 1965.
In August 1966 Mary learned about a job at the University of
California, Santa Barbara and moved there. She enjoyed art classes
in her spare time. She met Alan St. John and they married in June
1969. She worked on campus until she retired in 1992. A friend (Mary’s
Work/Study help at UCSB while working toward a Master’s degree)
whose family had one of the first silk import businesses in the U.S. hired
her and she worked for them for 6 years. Mary and her friend took a 10
day trip to China a few years later.
In November 1998 Mary and her husband were thinking about
retirement and eager to leave California. They moved to Yukon where
Mary’s brothers live and she’s lived ever since. Mary’s husband Alan passed
away on September 11, 2005. U.S. flags were at half-staffed that day due to
9/11 remembrance and Alan loved putting the flag out every day.
Mary had been doing sketching and watercolor at City Arts and Linda
Taylor invited the group to visit Spanish Cove for sketch sessions, lunch
and a tour. Mary decided to move in after several years of knowing
about the Good Life at the Cove. She is very thankful and grateful to
be at Spanish Cove and we are very happy to welcome her to the Cove
community. Welcome to Spanish Cove, Mary!
