November 2016 Dear Community of Joy, How are you? How do you answer that question? A few years ago after a perceived health scare, I started answering that question, “Grateful!” Even after my hereditary hypochondria passed, I came to the conclusion that every day is a gift. In fact, every minute of every day is a gift. e great pastor Gardner C. Taylor used to say as he visited other congregations, “I am glad to be here. When you get to be my age, you are glad to be most anywhere.” I am glad to be with you at Tallowood Baptist Church every chance we get! Someone calculated that Rudyard Kipling’s salary for writing amounted to about $100 per word. In a letter, a fan notified him of this calculation, enclosed a $100 bill and said, “Give me one of your best words.” Kipling wrote back, “ank-you!” What a good word. Not only is gratitude good, but Paul said, “Be thankful in all things for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Surely not everyone Paul addressed was having a good day, week, month or year to quote the theme song of a once-popular television series. But because he was writing to Christians Paul knew that regardless of their circumstances, the recipients of his letter were in Christ Jesus. is alone is a great reason for gratitude. I want to welcome you to a tradition we started on my first thanksgiving here. We will have a anksgiving Lord’s Supper service in our morning services on Sunday, November 20. We will offer you a moment at a microphone to speak your gratitude in a sentence. en we will take the Lord’s Supper together. At some point believers started calling the Lord’s Supper the Eucharist from the Greek word that means, “I give thanks!” So anksgiving for believers did not start in America with the Pilgrims, but went all the way back to worshiping the risen Lord. Jesus broke bread and gave thanks . . . and so we will we. How am I? Flags representing the nations where you send the gospel of Jesus Christ are now displayed in the Narthex in celebration of Tallowood’s 2016 Offering for Global Missions. 100% of all the offerings to Global Missions are used to directly support those serving on the mission field. Because prayer is foundational to the spread and sharing of the gospel, we will be providing special prayer guides for the Global Week of Prayer.
