Christmas CrackersFour favourites for the festive seasonRest assured, over the coming weeks you’ll need some inexpensive, versatile wines like these to hand for ‘surprise’ guests, boomerang offspring and chef’s sustenance.
The excellent, crisp Sauvignon from the wind-swept Atlantic plains is particularly good with shellfish or smoked salmon, while the weightier Grenache-blend from the Ardèche is a versatile crowd-pleaser.
The reds, both from that terrific source of vinous bargains the Languedoc, are two of our best sellers. The Minervois ‘Tradition’ is a spicy, warming blend of Carignan, Grenache & Syrah that makes an ideal accompaniment to stews or a Côte de Boeuf. The Côtes de Thongue, a juicy, garrigue-scented red (made just down the road from Minèrve) is a similar blend, but substitutes Merlot for Syrah, giving it a plumier, Bordelais touch that makes it suitable for lighter dishes, such as turkey or goose.
As this is our ‘jolly Sommelier Service’, it is available, on request, as all red or all white.

Festive FeastA sumptuous selection from Burgundy, the Loire, the Rhône and RoussillonThe two whites feature Chardonnay & Sauvignon from their respective spiritual homes - Burgundy and the Central Loire. Both examples are from small producers, messieurs Camu and Guyot, whose careful work in the vineyards and cellar result in delicious wines that grace many of the best wine lists in Britain.
The Roussillon ‘Tradition’, certified as organic for the first time in this 2010 vintage, is a light-heavyweight from the foothills of the Pyrenees and is as warming a winter red as you could wish for. Bringing up the rear is the Pascal Frères Gigondas which benefits from 6 years’ bottle age and should be enjoyed contemplatively, perhaps in front of a roaring fire and a good movie?
As this is the ‘Cellar Selection’ case, it is available, on request, as all red or all white.

Saint Pourçain ‘Cuvée Printanière’: Union des Vignerons 2012 ‘Absolutely delicious - smooth, packed with fruit, with the obscure Trésallier grape adding flowery freshness to the Chardonnay.’
Côtes du Rhone – Sablet: Domaine Saint Gayan 2012 ‘Five different grapes go into the luscious Sablet 2012 made by Jean-Pierre Meffre, including Viognier and Roussanne. So for a relatively cheap wine, it has rich layers of complexity which I found deeply satisfying.’

Vin de Pays Catalan ‘Carignan’: Domaine Ferrer-Ribière 2012 'The Carignan 2012 made by Denis Ferrer and Bruno Ribière in the Pays Catalan is gorgeous. Some of the vines are 135 years old. It's herby and full of blackberry and dark fruit flavours - a really superb example of some of the wines now coming out of the south. Delectable now, but will keep for quite a while.’
Chinon: L’Arpenty 2012 ‘This 2012 ‘L'Arpenty’ Chinon is made from Cabernet Franc, which usually has just a walk-on part in claret, but on its own has a freshness and liveliness which makes it perfect with less heavy foods. It's a slightly unfamiliar taste, but one you will come to enjoy after the first glug.’
