    The English like to go Mummering . Thisis a Christmas time

    house-visiting tradition where a group of friends or family

    dress in disguise and visit homes in their community during

    the twelve days of Christmas.

    The day after Christmas is called Boxing Day because boys

    used to go round and collect money in clay boxes. When they

    were full they would break them open.

    Christmas dinner includes roast turkey or goose, brussel sprouts,

    roast potatoes, cranberry sauce, tiny sausages wrapped in bacon

    and hot gravy. For dessert the English eat Christmas pudding.

    In Finland, a little gnome namedJulenisse puts presents under the

    tree at night. The children leave porridge out for him.

    The dark cold winters inspired the tradition of Yule Log. A tree

    is brought into the house and placed into the fireplace while the

    rest of the tree spreads out into the room. The tree is fed into

    the fireplace slowly so that it lasts throughout the Xmas season.

    smoked salmon, fish roe and herring dishes.

    The main Christmas celebrations take place on Christmas Eve.

    The evening is called Szent-este or Holy Evening.

    On December 6th the children

    receive a visit from Mikulas or St

    Nicholas. He arrives wearing the

    robes of a bishop, with a red miter

    on his head, a staff in one hand

    and a sack full of small presents.
