Christmas in April*Calvert County, Inc. had it’s most out-
standing year ever in 2016. This year, Christmas in
April*Calvert County, Inc. reached a remarkable milestone.
2016 was the 25th anniversary of neighbors helping neigh-
bors through this program, assuring that low-income home-
owners live in warmth, safety, and independence. Our goal
was to work on fifty homes but we were able to exceed this
goal by seven. Fifty-seven homeowners, the most ever,
benefited from the generosity of volunteers giving of their
time and expertise and supporters donating supplies and
finances to make this possible! Nine hundred plus volun-
teers donated more than 10,000 hours to serve homeowners
in Calvert County. Not only did these numbers increase this
year, but the number of house sponsors grew from fifteen in
2015 to an overwhelming number of thirty-seven in 2016!
Donors of $2000 or more are acknowledged as a sponsor of
a house, as are groups that sponsored a whole house, no
matter the cost. The Calvert County community is great!
Thanks to many willing hands and loving hearts,
Christmas in April volunteers also were busy helping out
nine non-profit organizations with repairs and improve-
ments during the Day of Caring in September and National
Volunteer Week in December.
One recipient’s words express the thanks for
many. “How can we adequately express our deepest thanks
in mere words? We have been in awe of your goodness and
kindness. Christmas in April has blessed us in a beautiful
way.”
We thank Bill Lloyd for his eight years of serving
as president of this organization and welcome Glenn Phelps
as the incoming president.
Young and old, male and female, and persons with
skills and persons with no particular skills all come together
to make this happen. Churches, organizations, businesses,
youth groups, and individuals join in a spirit of caring and
giving to help others improve their living situation.
As you read this newsletter, please note the sup-
porters of Christmas in April and offer them your thanks
and support. Read how lives have been changed through
Christmas in April. Christmas in April*Calvert County, Inc.
looks forward to the future of continuing to serve low in-
come homeowners in Calvert County. Please contact us if
you wish to submit an application for help, volunteer, pro-
vide financial assistance, or donate supplies.

“I did not know where to turn and then Christmas in April came in – like angels coming in. Things look so much brighter and they gave me hope.”
“I never saw a volunteer who wasn’t smiling.”
Quotes from April 2016 recipients
House # 1 This house was worked on in July 2015 due to the
emergency need for a wheelchair ramp for this homeowner
who has lived in her house for forty years. Joe Suarez-Murias,
house captain, led thirty-one volunteers from Kiewit, the
Knights of Columbus Council 9258, Patuxent High School
NJROTC, Exelon Generation and family members to build the
ramp and do maintenance work which included yard work,
relocating an outside waterline, constructing a chimney cover,
cleaning gutters, re-screening a porch, and exterior painting.
The homeowner said the ramp gave her freedom and the new
glass door gave her the world as she was now able to “see the
world.” She also said she never saw a volunteer that wasn’t
smiling. This project was sponsored by the Knights of
Columbus Council 9258.
House # 2 Steve and Vada Brooks, brothers, were house
captains for eight Calvert Lighthouse Church volunteers who
installed a ramp for this homeowner in November. A small
deck was constructed so that she can sit outside. The
homeowner said that she was pretty much confined to her
house prior to this work but now she can get outside on her
own, sit on the deck, and get the fresh air. “I truly appreciate
it and the volunteers do a really good job.” This home was
sponsored by IHI Kiewit.
House # 3 Larry Carter was house captain for this team of ten
volunteers from Harvest Fellowship Presbyterian Church,
Exelon Generation, and Calvert County Government who
improved this home for a Day of Caring project. They
replaced the roof (some sheathing and shingles), exterior
lights, and the kitchen vinyl floor. They did general yard
clean up. The homeowner said there could not be two greater
people than the house captain and his wife and, “if there were
more people like them, the world would be a better place.”
Thanks also to Floor Systems-Huntingtown for donating
flooring materials, the Calvert County Department of Solid
Waste, and to Exelon Generation for providing lunch and also
for sponsoring this project.
House # 4 Patuxent Habitat for Humanity and Christmas in
April, with Adam Sanders of Chicago Bridge and Iron serving
as house captain, improved accessibility to this home for a
veteran as a summer 2015 project. The team of twenty-six
volunteers removed a brick retaining wall and various shrubs
in front of the house to facilitate construction of a wheelchair
accessible ramp and deck. The existing porch rails were
4
5
removed, repaired, painted, and replaced. General yard work
was also done. As an expression of his appreciation, the
homeowner posted a great video on his YouTube website
entitled “The Building of My 48 Foot Ramp.” “After more
than 18 years of helping in Christmas in April projects, I am
finally on the receiving end,” he displays on the video. House
sponsor Patuxent Habitat for Humanity also provided
breakfast. Additional support came from IHI Kiewit, Exelon
Generation which also provided lunch, Bartlett Nuclear, Inc.,
and the Calvert County Department of Solid Waste.
House # 5 #Giving Tuesday provided an opportunity for
Christmas in April to build a ramp for a homeowner who has
been housebound because of difficulty negotiating steps. Pat
Pringle, house captain from Exelon, led fourteen volunteers in
constructing a wheel chair ramp and accessible deck The
homeowner said that the ramp has been “just wonderful. I feel
so blessed. I had to miss doctors’ appointments because I
could not get out of the house. I have an appointment
tomorrow and I can go!” Special thanks to Exelon
Generation, Dominion Cove Point LNG, Bartlett Nuclear,
Inc., IHI Kiewit, family members of the homeowner, Chicago
Bridge and Iron, Harvest Presbyterian Church, Sneades ACE
Hardware, and the Calvert County Department of Solid Waste
for the success of this project. - Exelon Generation was the
sponsor of this home.
House # 6 Vince Maldenado, house captain, with twenty
volunteers from Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church and
the Knights of Columbus Council # 9254 installed six new
thermal pane windows in this home. They removed and
replaced an old deck which was falling apart and performed
considerable yard work, which included cleaning, mulching,
and reshaping flower beds. Lunch was provided by Exelon
Generation and A. A. Hatcher provided support for the
project. The homeowner was really pleased with the increased
safety for family members and the new windows which have
improved energy efficiency for the home. Volunteers even
discovered a sidewalk which had been covered in dirt. This
home was sponsored by the HELP Association.
House # 7 The Calvert Bar Association, led by Emanuel
Demedis, house captain, rebuilt the deck for this homeowner
who said that she had not been able to even step out on the
deck because it was falling in. Another major improvement
was the repair to the bathroom floor. According to the
satisfied homeowner, “The floor felt like it was going to give
in and now is excellent!” She also received a new toilet and
replacement of a foundation vent. The home was pressure
washed and “looks much better.”
House # 8 George Leah, Jr., house captain, guided thirty
volunteers from the Kiwanis Club of Calvert, the Calvert
County Board of Education, and the Huntingtown High
School Key Club. as they made numerous improvements on
this home. The kitchen received a make-over with new
kitchen cabinets and floor, ceiling and wall painting, and
improved light fixtures and baseboard heat. The bathroom
received new lighting, a sink fixture, and baseboard heat.
Numerous drywall repairs were made and the entire house was
painted. An exterior light fixture and smoke detectors were
also installed. New bedroom doors and locksets were
additional improvements. “It looks like a different house,”
said a family member. “We really appreciate it when people
do something like this for us.” Thanks also to Tile A While
(St. Mary’s) and Patuxent Habitat for Humanity for their
support of this project. Floor Systems, Inc. was the sponsor
for this home.
House # 9 This home is safer and more accessible for the
elderly homeowner, thanks to seven volunteers from the
Calvert Bar Association, with Emanuel Demedis as house
captain. New carpeting was installed in the living room and
bedroom and the vinyl tile was replaced in the kitchen and
bathroom. These improvements made it much easier to move
the homeowner around her house in her wheelchair. The
former carpeting was “so, so old” and worn out while the
vinyl floor was torn in many places. The homeowner is also
very happy with the new kitchen cabinets, counter top, and
sink. “It looks so good, so nice,” said a family member.
HELP Association sponsored this project.
House # 10 Christmas in April came early for these
homeowners in December for “Giving Tuesday.” This team
of ten volunteers was led by two house captains, John Lee of
Prince Frederick Dodge and Pat Pringle of Exelon. The most
important improvement was the modification of the bathtub
for easy access. The homeowner said that the walk-in shower
was really needed because of the arthritis in her knees. “This
is a blessing. I can use this real good.” The front door, storm
6
door, and shutters were replaced and the gutters were cleaned.
Special thanks to Exelon Generation, house sponsor, and
Prince Frederick Dodge, U. S. Nuclear Regulatory
Commission, Bartlett Nuclear, Inc., Russell Bowie Project
Management, and Cave to Castle Remodeling.
House # 11 Twenty-eight volunteers from Mill Creek Middle
School National Junior Honor Society, with Jennifer Murphy
as house captain, and Exelon Generation made needed
improvements on this home. The students were involved in
painting the outside of the house which the homeowner said
looked “really good!” Other work included a new exterior
door, putting screens on the gutters, finishing the shoe
molding in the kitchen, putting a new knob on the back door,
and then painting the door. “The work was outstanding and I
thank them for it,” exclaimed the homeowner. This home was
sponsored by Exelon Generation.
House # 12 George Carter led this team of six volunteers
from the Concerned Black Men of Calvert County, as they
removed, repaired, and then replaced the bathroom subfloor
and floor. Other bathroom improvements included
replacement of the bathroom sink and faucet and the shower
diverter knob. The team also removed the vinyl flooring from
the kitchen and dining room area and reinstalled sheet flooring
material. The homeowner that it is a good feeling to have
floors which are not rotted out and coming to pieces. “Give
them all the honor, glory, and praise for all they have done,”
she exclaimed. Special thanks go to Floor Systems, Inc. for
supporting this project and to Exelon Generation, sponsor.
House # 13 Howard Brooks, house captain, with three
volunteers from Reality Homes made safety improvements to
this home. A wooden rail was replaced on the deck and deck
stairs and a new railing was also installed for the basement
steps. A new stronger deck was built to replace the one which
was so old. The homeowner was also pleased to have a gate
installed for the downstairs steps to prevent the visiting young
grandchildren from going up the stairs. “Everything went just
fine,” said the appreciative homeowner. Sponsorship of this
home was provided by the HELP Association.
House # 14 Kiewit provided six volunteers to make needed
improvements to this home, with Lawrence Uresti III serving
as house captain. Four windows were replaced in the front of
the house and three interior doors were replaced. The grateful
homeowner expressed her thanks and said, “The house looks
much better, oh my Lord, the windows look some kind of
good.” She is also aware that the home will be more energy
efficient. IHI Kiewit was the sponsor of this home.
House # 15 Fourteen volunteers representing Calvert
Lighthouse Church were led by Vada Brooks, house captain,
to replace a ramp which was in poor condition for this
homeowner whose knees give her problems when she has to
do steps. A deck was added on with the new ramp. Two new
doors and a window were also installed. Floor repairs were
made to the rotting floor area in the kitchen and a base kitchen
cabinet was replaced. Gutters were installed so that the
homeowner can now unlock her door and not have water drip
on her when it is raining. She is “very satisfied.” United
Health Care sponsored this project.
House # 16 This team of ten volunteers from Arrow Electric
was directed by Tom Merkle, house captain. Electrical repairs
were made to improve safety in the home. Three ceilings
were painted and a stainless steel kit that had been put up
through the roof for a wood stove was removed from both the
inside and outside. Some drywall work and painting were
done in the kitchen and missing shingles were replaced on the
roof. The homeowner likes the new kitchen light and said,
“This doesn’t look like the same place. They did good work
and were pretty quick about it.” This home was sponsored by
Arrow Electric.
House # 17 Eighteen volunteers from Emanuel Baptist
Church, with Fritz Fritton leading the team, installed two new
windows in this home where window sills had rotted out. The
homeowner appreciates the additional light in her home
provided by the windows. Other repairs included replacement
of the gutters, yard work, and safety improvements to her
7
porch and steps. “Thank God! I really appreciate the work. I
could not do it myself,” said the elderly homeowner.
House # 18 Glenn Phelps from Cave to Castle Remodeling,
house captain, led sixteen volunteers who completed work on
this home so that the homeowners would be able to maintain
their homeowner’s insurance. Repairs included removing and
replacing shingles on the garage, installing fascia on the house
and garage and pressure washing both buildings. Railings
were installed on the porches and gutters were installed on the
house and garage. According to the homeowners, “Christmas
in April means relief and takes away a lot of tension.” “It
brings tears to my eyes whenever I think of this.” Project
support was provided by Cave to Castle Remodeling, Sneade’s
ACE Hardware, IHI Kiewit, Bartlett Nuclear, Inc., Chicago
Bridge and Iron, Harvest Fellowship Presbyterian Church,
Knights of Columbus Council 9258, Exelon Generation, and
friends and neighbors. This home was sponsored by Sneade’s
ACE Hardware.
House # 19 This talented, energetic crew of twenty-one
volunteers from Huntingtown United Methodist Church said
they were able to accomplish a lot, in part, because “they were
fueled by huge quantities of pies, cakes, and brownies baked
by our homeowner.” The homeowner had previously fallen
on her back steps. She now has new steps and railings for her
back steps and also another set of steps was repaired with
railings added. Tasks included creating a new flower garden,
installing an overhead light in the living room, replacing a
rotted soffit, wrapping the front and side soffits with
aluminum, and fixing gutters and downspouts. Leaks in the
metal roof were caulked and the deck was painted. “I never
thought I would live to see this day,” said the thankful
homeowner. This home was supported by A. H. Hatcher, Inc.
and sponsored by Dominion.
House # 20 A new heat pump was installed by McCrea
Services Heating and Air. The homeowner was previously
using space heaters and is pleased that she will not be using as
much electricity now and this will make a big difference in her
budget, besides having improved safety for her home.
McCrea Services Heating and Air was the sponsor of this
home.
House # 21 This crew of eighteen volunteers from Smithville
United Methodist Church were led by Dave Fondelier, house
captain. The work scope included painting the living room
ceiling and installing an exterior door, two accordion doors,
and one kitchen wall cabinet. Repairs were made to exterior
window frames and CO/smoke detectors were added. Major
repairs were made to the bathroom by replacing the
subflooring and putting down vinyl flooring. The higher toilet
installed was really important to one of the homeowners who
had a stroke four years ago. Yard work was completed and
electrical improvements made the home safer. The
homeowner was so impressed that everything was done on the
list that day and said, “They were working. I can tell you
that!” This project was sponsored by Smithville United
Methodist Church.
House # 22 Nineteen volunteers from Jesus the Good
Shepherd Catholic Church worked alongside house captain,
Randy Kozik, to provide needed repairs to this home. With a
weather forecast of rain and damp weather for the week of the
workday, much of the painting, staining, repair work and
construction of new steps for the deck were completed by
available volunteers prior to the workday. On the Saturday
workday, all volunteers pitched in to scrape and paint the
interior of the front porch, replace and paint drywall in the
upstairs bedroom, replace the damaged fascia and repair the
soffit of the house, construct an overhead shelter to cover the
stairway of the basement entrance, replace the kitchen floor,
and clean and scrub the front steps. All this was accomplished
with a variety of skills, enthusiasm, busy hands and a desire to
help our neighbors. The homeowner said, “Christmas in April
is a big blessing. They did a marvelous job.” A great day for
the giver and the receiver!
House # 23 Glenn Phelps and Cave to Castle Remodeling
replaced six windows in this home. The windows will
definitely improve energy efficiency in this house. According
to the homeowner, “They look a whole lot better and that is a
blessing. The windows will make a big difference for us.
8
Thank you so much and God Bless You.” Dominion Cove
Point LNG sponsored this home.
House # 24 Calvert Health System’s Team, with Margaret
Fowler as house captain, consisted of volunteers from across
the organization. Nurses, doctors, administrative personnel,
family members and family owned businesses provided the
expertise needed to complete this job. There was a job for
everyone from yard work of raking leaves, cutting grass, and
mulching flower beds, to cleaning and repairing gutters and
down spouts, to replacing kitchen faucets, snaking drains, and
painting bathrooms. Last, but not least, volunteers cleaned the
car port, deck, and screened in porch of equipment, tools, and
chemicals. These items were organized in the homeowner’s
shed. This made these areas safer for her to use. The entire
team had a great time and enjoyed visiting with the
homeowner who said it was so nice to see staff from Calvert
Memorial Hospital outside the walls of the hospital. Before
this day, she only saw staff inside the hospital when she was a
patient. She gave a “two thumbs up” to everything that was
done and especially looked forward to using her screened
porch for morning coffee.
House # 25 Everard Johnson was house captain for the seven
volunteers from Mt. Olive United Methodist Church who
worked successfully on this home. Among the tasks
performed, they scraped and painted the fascia and soffit and
did yard work which included reshaping and mulching the
flower beds. The grateful homeowner said, “It went very well.
The volunteers did a superb job!”
House # 26 High school student and new house captain,
Laura Phelps, led seventeen volunteers from Northern High
School Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and Cave to
Castle Remodeling. The students worked for five hours doing
yard work, such as trimming bushes, pulling weeds, planting
flowers, and raking. Once everyone worked together to
complete each task, the group began to stain a small deck.
Many used this opportunity to pick up the new skill of staining
by working alongside their wonderful adult volunteers
correctly and efficiently. All around, the students of FCA had
a great time working with Christmas in April to give back to
their community. The pleased homeowner said, “I want to
thank them from the bottom of my heart! They even sang
Happy Birthday to me and gave me flowers.”
House # 27 James Pray was the house captain for sixteen
volunteers from Kiewit who made numerous improvements
for this elderly homeowner. Painting was done on the home
and gutters were added with extended drain piping so that
water drains farther from the house. The porch railing was
repaired and shingles were replaced on both the front and back
porches. Water was running down on to the floor from the
shower and this situation was corrected. According to the
homeowner’s daughter, “The volunteers did an excellent,
excellent, excellent, excellent job and were very friendly and
happy people.” IHI Kiewit was the sponsor of this home.
House # 28 Derek Taylor was house captain for this project
from Howlin Concrete which built a 30’ by 4’ wheelchair
ramp for the homeowner. Precision Contracting formed and
repoured the stoop and stairs. Concrete Walls, Inc. pumped
the concrete and Dunkirk Supply installed the railings.
Special thanks also go to Castillas Framing for support. The
homeowner was not able to take his wheelchair down his
previous ramp. Now, he can exit his home by walker or
wheelchair and he will be able to go out more. He describes
the ramp as “real handy.” This home was supported by
Patuxent Habitat for Humanity and was sponsored by Howlin
Concrete.
House # 29 Major improvements were made on this home by
ten volunteers from Wilson Properties, Inc., with Dan Wilson
serving as house captain. The kitchen was completely
transformed with a new floor, repairing of holes in the walls
and painting, and new kitchen cabinets and counter tops.
Plumbing repairs were also made. A stove hood, kitchen fans,
and a light above the sink were installed. Two layers were
stripped off the old roof and the team put on a new roof.
Gutters were replaced and yard debris was removed. The
homeowner expressed her feelings this way: “We have been
in awe of your goodness and kindness. Christmas in April has
blessed us in a beautiful way.” Wilson Reality sponsored this
home.

House # 30 Michael Freeburger, house captain, along with
nineteen volunteers from Early Bird Home Services, painted
the living room, hallway, and kitchen for this homeowner.
They also power washed the exterior of the house and painted
two decks. New blinds were installed in the living room and
sunroom. “The volunteers were very polite and very patient
with us,” said the appreciative homeowner. Lunch was
provided by Heavenly Chicken, Gary Armstrong. Early Bird
Home Services sponsored this home.
House # 31 Christmas in April installed a new drain field for
this homeowner. She said, “We had to be so careful taking
showers and flushing toilets and still had to have the septic
pumped every couple of months. Thank you so much. It was
awesome!” Glenn Phelps was responsible for all
arrangements.
House # 32 This team of fifteen volunteers from Prince
George’s County Government was directed by Jay Maisel. A
roof leak was repaired and the gutters were cleaned and
reattached. A French door and exterior door were replaced
and general home cleanup was completed. Smoke detectors
were installed. The homeowner is relieved to have repairs
done to the steps and railing going down to the basement. She
said, “Everything was very, very well done and the volunteers
were very, very friendly!” PNC Bank sponsored this project.
House # 33 The Calvert County Lions Club, guided by Brian
Owens, house captain, completed a number of projects on this
home, which included replacing wood trim that was rotten
around windows, pressure washing the entire house, and
painting shutters and trim around the windows and front door.
They replaced or repaired two downspouts, cleaned the
gutters, and replaced pickets on the deck and an outside light
fixture. Much yard work was done, including removing dead
trees and lots of yard debris and mulching flower beds. A 30
yard dumpster was completely filled with yard waste and
items the homeowner no longer wanted. Four members of the
family were a huge help and worked extremely hard all day.
The homeowner said, “Everything looks beautiful!” Thanks
go to Dunkirk Supply for sponsoring this home.
House # 34 Twenty-six volunteers from St. Nicholas
Lutheran Church, All Saints Episcopal Church, and USAF
Andrews Aircraft Maintenance joined together to make many
needed improvements for this homeowner. House captains
were Frank McPhillips and Keith Williams. “Filling the big
hole in the back yard was one of the most grueling things they
did,” said the homeowner. A new bathroom floor was
installed, a rear hand railing was secured and painted, the
entire kitchen was repainted along with the family room and
hallway, gutter guards were installed, and kitchen cabinets
were repaired. Two interior doors, a new crawl space door
and two deck gates were installed. Three loads of trash were
removed. The homeowner’s husband had been ill for some
time and died recently. She said, “I did not know where to
turn and then Christmas in April came in – like angels coming
in. Things look so much brighter and they gave me hope.”
House # 35 Ten volunteers from All Saints Episcopal Church
and St. Nicholas Church were guided by Frank McPhillips and
Keith Williams, house captains, as repairs were made for this
homeowner. The building of a long sidewalk from the
driveway to the back entrance of the house was a major safety
improvement as the homeowner had previously fallen in this
area and broken her shoulder. The deck was stained, a door
repaired, and the gutters cleaned. The homeowner said, “This
10
was just like Christmas. The house captain and his family
were out of this world. I can only call him an angel.”
House # 36 This homeowner had not been able to use water
from his own well for almost three years when his pump fell
into the well. Christmas in April, with Glenn Phelps as house
captain, provided the needed repairs and also discovered that
electric was working full time going to his pump and,
therefore, his electric bills had been exceptionally high during
this period. Not only does he have his own water now, he has
reduced electric bills. This home was sponsored by Dominion
Cove Point LNG.
House # 37 Jada Stuckert, house captain, directed thirty-five
volunteers from Patuxent High School NJROTC and Exelon
Generation as they improved the appearance of this home with
much yard work. Large areas of flowers beds were worked
and mulched. A tree was removed that was falling down and
debris was hauled away. The screen door was repaired and
the house was cleaned. Safety improvements included
resetting the pavers in the walkway. The homeowner
complimented the volunteers saying, “It was good to see the
kids work like that together. They seemed to enjoy the work
they were doing. Those children will go far in life. I just
know it!!” This home was sponsored by Exelon Generation.
House # 38 Four volunteers from the Harvest Fellowship
Presbyterian Church worked on this home under the direction
of Larry Carter, house captain. Their work day was rained out
but, in the spirit of Christmas in April, the volunteers who
could come on another day picked up the slack and finished
the work. They repaired a shed, trimmed trees in the yard, and
removed trash. The house was pressure washed. A large
window was replaced and the tracks of the front windows
were fixed so that the windows would slide better. The storm
door and a bi-fold door were also replaced. Neighbors were
very gracious and also helped as they could. Odds and ends
were fixed in addition to the planned tasks. For instance, the
outside water spigot and the light in the crawl space were
replaced. The homeowner was very pleased with the
improvements and said, “The volunteers worked good and
were so friendly. I enjoyed them – they were like part of the
family.” Dominion Cove Point LNG sponsored the work on
this home.
House # 39 Susie Lopez and Terry Johnson led this team of
thirteen volunteers from Dominion Cove Point. The team
completed the following tasks: removing and replacing a shed
roof, repairing the vinyl siding, painting the exterior fascia and
trim, and painting the foundation of the house. In addition the
entire house was pressure washed. The homeowners said,
“Everything went beautiful. The volunteers were awesome
and did a good job.” This home was sponsored by Dominion.
House # 40 Twenty-eight volunteers from Grace Brethren
Church of Calvert County were guided by Devin Livingston to
improve this home. The deck, stoop, and house were power
washed and then the entire exterior of the house was painted.
The rotten floor in the bathroom was replaced and a new
vanity was installed. Kitchen cabinets were replaced and yard
work was done for the homeowner. “They were hard working
people who got the job done. They did a wonderful job and
worked good together,” said the homeowner. SMECO
sponsored the work on this project.
House # 41 Vada Brooks, house captain, with a crew of four
volunteers from Calvert Lighthouse Church replaced the
bathroom floor which was in major need of repair. The
homeowner says the light tile is “gorgeous.” She says she
could have fallen through the old floor but now she could
jump on this floor and it would be fine. Her front door was
fixed so that it can be closed. Addressing safety issues was a
big concern for these volunteers. Sneade’s ACE Hardware
receives thanks for sponsoring this project.
House # 42 This is the first of four homes worked on by
volunteers from Friendship United Methodist Church with
Ray Wilkerson as house captain for each home. Three
volunteers removed the old soft floor in the bathroom, which a
person could have potentially fallen through according to the
homeowner, and replaced it. Plumbing repairs were also
made. They also sealed the roof seam on both sides to prevent
further water damage. The homeowner is happy to have a
much safer house.
House # 43 Fifteen volunteers from Friendship United
Methodist Church, under the leadership of Ray Wilkerson,
power washed and painted this mobile home, repaired the
skirting, sealed the roof, and sealed two decks. They also
discovered that the main water pipe going into the house was
leaking and repaired that. The homeowner said everything
went “just fine.”
House # 44 Ray Wilkerson was again house captain for these
two volunteers from Friendship United Methodist Church who
replaced two windows, caulked roof seams, and replaced the
skirting on this home. The homeowner said the new windows
are “beautiful,” and that we have had a lot of rain since the
roof repairs and that there have been no leaks.
11
House # 45 Friendship United Methodist Church, with Ray
Wilkerson as house captain, provided six volunteers to work
on this home. These volunteers replaced the sink and vanity
in the bathroom. The former vanity had been made out of
plywood and was “really bad,” according to the homeowner.
The loose toilet was secured. Caulking the roof seam has
prevented further water leaks in the home. The skirting
around the house was also repaired. The homeowner
described the volunteers as “amazing!” Patuxent Habitat for
Humanity sponsored this home.
House # 46 Almost eight years without a working well was
hard on this couple as they had to haul water to their home and
could not afford a new well. “Still,” the homeowner said,
“We and our house were always clean.” “It was a blessing
that it worked out for Christmas in April to put in a well. God
is good.” Glenn Phelps was house captain for this project.
House # 47 Water backed up in this widow’s shower. “It was
awful,” said the homeowner, “but now everything is
wonderful.” Christmas in April had a drain field installed for
her. “That was my Thanksgiving present and Christmas
present. God is good.” House captain was Glenn Phelps.
House # 48 IET Corporation provided an outstanding number
of volunteers, forty-four, to help this elderly, disabled, veteran
homeowner. This group, led by Krystal Ringley, made many
repairs, including over thirty drywall repairs, replacing a
bathroom subfloor where the toilet had been rocking, repairing
kitchen cabinets, and interior cleaning and painting. Outside,
a storm door window and garage door were repaired, painting
was completed, and yard cleanup was performed. This
homeowner and his daughter, who called from California to
offer her thanks, were extremely grateful. He said, “I
appreciate them for all they do, not only for me, but for the
community. They have gone above and beyond in all aspects.
God Bless Them All! The Calvert County Department of
Solid Waste and Patuxent Habitat for Humanity were also
supporters of this project.
House # 49 Larry Clark led this team of fourteen volunteers
from Jesus The Divine Word Knights of Columbus Council
#14775 as they replaced the front porch and step of this house
and made major roof repairs. The bathroom ceiling was
replaced. Needed interior painting was completed and the
gutters were cleaned. The front door was weather stripped
and volunteers provided general yard clean up. According to
the homeowner, “The work was wonderful, wonderful, and
beautiful!” Her son was also most appreciative of the work
that “was wonderful.”
House # 50 After this homeowner had to withdraw from the
program at the last minute, the team from Prince Frederick
Dodge and Artic Snow Management, guided by Denise Aud,
house captain, made needed improvements for the Calvert
Humane Society in Sunderland. Twenty-six volunteers made
repairs to the walkway and the deck. Exterior painting
enhanced the appearance of the building and yard work was
completed. Repairs were also made to the roof vents. This
non-profit agency was most appreciative for the services
provided by this team. Prince Frederick Dodge sponsored this
home.
House # 51 This elderly homeowner had water seeping out of
her septic and going downhill and, “when it was warm, it had
an awful smell,” she said. After Christmas in April had
septic work completed, she said that “Everything is
12
wonderful! It is a blessing! I appreciate it 100%.” Glenn
Phelps was house captain.
House # 52 Alyson Hall, student, served as house captain
along with Traci Peters for this group of twenty-eight
volunteers from the Northern High School National Honor
Society and eight volunteers from Exelon Generation. The
project was to entirely clean out the three car garage and
trailer on the premises. Many items were removed and
disposed of, with the homeowner’s approval, and then all
items were reorganized. A tremendous amount of yard work
was done, which included raking the yard, weed wacking,
pulling weeds, cleaning and rebuilding several flower beds,
and then mulching. Debris was removed from the yard and
many electrical improvements were made. The homeowner
said, “Everyone was so ambitious and working so hard. I am
proud they would take their time to do this for old people like
us.” Thanks to Exelon Generation for providing lunch and
also sponsoring this project.
House # 53 This large team of thirty-five volunteers from the
Calvert Middle School National Jr. Honor Society was led by
house captain Amanda Tyndall and student leads Megan
Williams, Lauren Brennan, and Evan Tracy. This team
prepped and painted the entire exterior of the house and
garage. The team also cleaned up the yard and planted a
flower bed for the homeowners. The homeowners were very
pleased with the results and the neighbors were amazed with
the kindness and charity displayed by the students. Lunch for
this event was sponsored by Exelon Generation. Additional
project supporters were Cave to Castle Remodeling, Patuxent
Habitat for Humanity, Brothers Johnson Septic, A. H. Hatcher,
and Chesapeake Bounty. Home sponsor was Exelon
Generation.
House # 54 Everard Johnson and Bobby Adams led this team
of six volunteers from Mt. Olive United Methodist Church to
perform repairs for this husband and wife. They replaced two
doors and removed and replaced the skirting around the entire
mobile home. They then pressure washed the house. “It was
so clean,” according to the homeowners, “that it looked like
new siding had been put on the house.” “Everything went
beautiful,” was another comment the grateful homeowners
made.
House # 55 This 100% disabled homeowner and his wife had
been using electric heaters the last two winters because the
furnace was not working. Thanks to Jarboe Mechanical which
sponsored this home and made the needed repairs, the heat and
air conditioning units are now functioning well and the
homeowners are most appreciative of the work done for them.
Steve Sanders was house captain for this home which was
sponsored by Jarboe Mechanical.
House # 56 These elderly homeowners had their home
improved by fourteen Davis, Upton & Palumbo volunteers
who were guided by Randy Morgan, house captain. A new
storm door was installed to prevent air from coming in.
Electrical repairs improved safety in the home. The sinking
door sill was repaired and gutters were cleaned. Siding was
repaired at the old dryer vent. Window repairs were made and
bathroom trim and exterior painting were completed. Yard
work included pruning bushes and trees and raking. The
homeowner said, “Christmas in April means the world to me.
I would never have been able to afford to have these repairs
done.”
House # 57 Patuxent Habitat for Humanity and Christmas in
April collaborated to improve the home of this local veteran.
Thanks go to Ms. Dakota for breakfast. The group led by Bob
Filippi (Bartlett Nuclear) did a wonderful job in cleaning and
with yard work, which included cutting grass, trimming
shrubs, and mulching flower beds. Eric Walls (USAF)
resolved safety issues by installing a stable handrail and
bannister for the front walk way entrance. The last group,
charged by William Edelman and Celeste and Bob Trossback
(USAF), did a complete makeover of the bathroom. This
group gutted the existing bathroom and replaced the subfloor,
vinyl flooring, toilet and vanity. They installed a grab bar and
painted. Thanks also go to Sneades’ACE Home Center, the
11th
CES of the United States Air Force, Dunkirk Supply, Inc.,
Bartlett Nuclear, Inc., volunteers from Calvert County
Government, and A. H. Hatcher for making this such a
successful project. Patuxent Habitat for Humanity sponsored
the work on this home and also provided breakfast.

Preparations Take Place Year Round for the April Workday
Applications are accepted year round for the work day the following year, the last Saturday in April. Normally, the application
deadline is September 30 of the prior year. Applications may be found in the churches, the senior centers, the libraries, and with a
number of non-profit organizations. Applications may be requested by calling 410-535-4606 or may be printed off or submitted
online at www.christmasinaprilcalvertcounty.org. The application can be submitted by the homeowner or a family member, a
neighbor, or by an organization with the consent of the homeowner. All of the legal homeowners must live in their house. All work
and materials are supplied free of charge to the selected homeowner.
Once applications are received, the House Selection Committee meets and members of the committee, including a skilled labor
volunteer, visit application sites in October to determine the homeowner’s eligibility and the feasibility of repairs. The committee
then makes recommendations to the Board based on the need and Christmas in April’s ability to do the work. Homeowners will be
informed in January of the decision, once Christmas in April knows it has a House Captain and group to do the work on the approved
homes.
Parallel to the application process runs the selection of House Captains and groups to do the work for approved homes. Many of
these House Captains and their organizations have supported Christmas in April for many years. The next step involves lining up
House Captains with the different projects. The House Captain then meets with the homeowner to determine the work required.
Together they will determine a list of priorities. Based on the priorities, the House Captain then makes up a list of the supplies needed
for the workday, which will be ordered by the Home Logistics Committee and delivered to the home one to two days prior to the
workday. Homeowners who need more work done on their house than can be completed in one day are encouraged to reapply the
following year.
On the workday, hundreds of volunteers, providing skilled and unskilled labor, meet at the different work sites. Others work
behind the scenes, preparing lunches, and supplying logistic support. The planned amount of work is based on an eight hour workday.
Every House Captain will complete a report on the work done and the number of volunteer hours. A month later, members of the
House Selection Committee contact all homeowners to determine if all work was completed. The Board follows up until all work is
finished.
Funds for the workday are solicited throughout the year through the writing of grant applications, a mail campaign to the public,
events, and through the generosity of many businesses, organizations, and individuals.
