MERRY CHRISTMAS GUYS! Welcome to a special issue of BUM where we come up with some gift ideas for all you burly, bearded blokes and admirers.

There are some fantastic bear owned businesses out there, and we’ve asked just some of them to give us their recommendations for great gift ideas this holiday season.

You’ll also find some ideas from the ‘big boys’ like Forbidden Planet, Lego and Disney. So something for everyone! Hopefully this special issue will reduce some of the stress of Christmas shopping for you.

WHO IS MOODYBEAR?Moodybear came to fruition from the musings of a designer and printer at a Bear Event in Belfast. 12 months of work later and we opened with 6 designs of the geeky variety, and what soon became the company trademark the MoodyBear!

Designs by Glenn Quigley and printed by Andrew Clarke, this two men team want to offer something that bears of the world can wear and enjoy!

Moodybear has worked with cubandbear.co.uk in production of their amazing fashion shirts (go on check them out) and also community groups and bear events such as, Men Of The North, BearScots, and Manbears. In August 2012 Moodybear became the printer for RoB Manchester, and in December 2012 became the printer/ designer of the UK

SCRUFF logo on agreement from SCRUFF. You can often see Andrew popping up at a bear event near you selling t-shirts, and is a regular on the market at the Great British Bear Bash and BearScots Fest. Moodybear wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the Bear Community.

Essential hits such as Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan’s Especially For You, Bananarama’s Venus and Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up feature alongside sought-after rarities and fan favourites by everyone from cyberpunk fantasy band Sigue Sigue Sputnik to Philly soul sensations the Three Degrees and Motown legend Edwin Starr.

Each remastered CD single in this set is presented in an individual card sleeve replicating classic original vinyl artwork and has been expanded to include 12” mixes, rare B-sides and bonus cuts, with fourteen CDs ‘packjammed’ as special double A-side editions each featuring two classic singles.

Across 31 discs, the complete box set boasts over 250 tracks, many of which

are previously unreleased or on CD for the very first time, making this collection a must-have for all SAW fans, collectors and connoisseurs of 80s pop. Housed in an heirloom-quality outer box designed in homage to the gold and silver disc-packed walls of the PWL ‘Hit Factory’, the set also includes a 48-page booklet featuring lyrics, discography, a commentary from Pete Waterman and brand new sleeve notes, plus an exclusive sticker sheet and postcard set.

After teaming up in early 1984, SAW soon scored hits with Divine and Hazell Dean before hitting the top spot with Dead Or Alive at the beginning of 1985. That year also found them penning and producing the bona-fide UK soul classic Say I’m Your Number One for Princess. Momentum continued to build with Bananarama’s Venus topping the US charts in 1986 and SAW pioneering the UK house sound with Mel & Kim, who hit number one with Respectable in early 1987. And from then on, the hits came thick and fast with Samantha Fox, Sinitta, Rick Astley, Kylie, Jason, Sonia and the original queen of disco Donna Summer just a few of the artists to take their tracks to the top end of the charts around the world.

In just over seven years, Stock Aitken Waterman scored over a hundred UK hit singles, including thirteen number ones, before Matt Aitken’s departure from the team in 1991. Their base, Pete Waterman’s PWL production company, studio complex

and latterly record label, self-styled as a the ‘British Motown’, was undoubtedly deserving of the ‘Hit Factory’ epithet, but as this collection ably demonstrates, the sheer diversity of SAW’s body of work disproves the myth of a conveyor-belt production line. Beyond the irresistibly instant Hi-NRG-influenced pop for which they are best known, their catalogue is characterised by diversity as much as quality, with their own rare groove smash Roadblock sitting alongside many such ‘lost gems’ as Brilliant’s underrated Love Is War, girlband Boy Krazy’s US hit That’s What Love Can Do and the blissful New York Afternoon featuring Georgie Fame.

Simon Alderson is a designer/maker specialising in stained and fused glass. He creates bespoke, functional and decorative homeware as well as contemporary glass art pieces. After graduating with a degree in Glass and Ceramics from the National Glass Centre, University of Sunderland he moved to Bristol, drawn here by the excellent art scene.

Glass is a magical and truly versatile medium to work with; colour underpins a lot of the artwork Simon creates, which offers the perfect backdrop for the familiar imagery of Bristol. Sheets of glass are cut and assembled in the kiln, which is then fired to 800°c. Once cooled images are then etched onto the surface through vinyl resists and sandblasting.

Simon works to commission from his studio at The Island, Nelson Street, and teaches various glass courses through the Creative Glass Guild.

GE-pix is a small business based in North Wales that was set up a number of years ago to help myself (Gary Edwards) to recover from a long term illness. DisneyLifeDisneyLife lets you stream films, TV shows and listen to soundtracks on all your devices for £9.99 a month

The UK branch of the firm has created an app called DisneyLife that gives up to six family members access to thousands of Disney films, TV shows, box sets, books and albums on mobile devices.

A subscription will cost £9.99 a month when the service launches in November, but users will also be given one download a month to use on installing other Disney apps.

In addition to this single app download, users will be able to download films and shows onto their devices to watch offline.

These downloads will work in a similar way to how the BBC iPlayer works. The content will be saved on the device for a limited amount of time before being automatically removed.

Each family member will be able to personalise the app by creating individual profiles using Disney characters. The app will also include built-in controls so parents can set time limits on their children’s profiles for weekday and weekend use.

DisneyLife is being made available on iOS and Android from launch, supporting Airplay and Chromecast, and other platforms are ‘in development.’

Bearly Bearded are a brand new beard care company with a mission to get the beards of the bear community looking, smelling and feeling great.

To get things rolling we have just announced our first product: a scented beard oil with a citrus tang, reminiscent of a warm mediterranean evening. This has been specially formulated by us to bring back memories of those balmy evenings out and about under the stars in Sitges and has taken us months of on-the-spot research to perfect. Coming very soon will be our unscented beard oil. This will be more of an everyday oil and will be especially useful for guys with bigger beards where a scented oil might be too strong or for those who just want the all benefits of a beard oil but without the scent - those who just like the natural bear smell. Next up after this we hope to bring out a beard balm - these are waxier and slightly stiffer and have more of a hold than a beard oil, and will help guys whose beards seems to have a mind of their own. And finally a beard wash, perfect for those soapy sessions in the shower.

So I guess you are wondering what exactly is this beard oil stuff and why exactly should you use one? Well one great reason to use a beard oil is to soften those coarse beard hairs. Ever felt a rough prickly face on yours in the middle of a moment of passion? (No? You definitely need to get out more). Well, next time, do your partner a favour and get your beard silky soft before a night

of passion. It’s only common courtesy that If you think you’re going to be rubbing beards with someone the least you can do is give them an experience to remember (in a good way). Beard oils are designed to moisturize your beard and be absorbed quickly so as not to leave it greasy, since the oils used mimic the natural oils produced by your skin - and as a bonus the oils will leave your skin feeling lovely and soft too. Then there’s the smell - there’s a wide a variety out there, so take your pick. Try some different ones and have some fun. Be warned though that some can be quite strong and musty and and will make you smell like you have just come out of the closet. However there’s a much wider choice these days, and the better ones will give your beard that extra bit of zing. And if you don’t like the smell you can always opt for an unscented oil.

This is all very well but don’t you need a big beard to bother with this stuff?No, you can get just as much benefit from a beard oil even if you keep your beard really short - in fact the shorter you keep it the more you need something to keep it soft and non-scratchy. Plus it will really help to moisten your skin. (You do moisturize right? Oh, I forgot, you’re a bear.)

Can’t I just use sunflower oil/olive oil/rape seed oil// my favourite supermaket oil? Surely that would be cheaper?Ew. Well, yes - if you want you beard to feel

and smell like a frying pan (although there is something to be said for that) . But some oils will just make your beard and face seriously greasy. Beard oils are chosen to be absorbed quickly into the hair and skin and not make your face look like it’s just had a close encounter with a deep fat fryer.

Can I use it on my body hair?Just how hairy are you? (No, seriously, we would like to know. Send us a pic). Not sure what the benefit would be but we would recommend an unscented oil though. But do get someone else to apply it. It won’t make any difference but it will be a lot more enjoyable.

Will it make my beard grow because mines a bit rubbish?Sorry, no, despite the claims made by certain products, there is no evidence that anything much helps with this. But it will help make it look and feel better though.

Will it stop my beard itching ?Yes it will help with an itchy beard. (But are you sure it’s just the beard though? Just saying...)

Can I use it on my leather gear?Sure, give it a go. We’d love to hear how that works out.
