Proclaiming God’s Word Old Testament Lesson: Psalm 119:65-72 Pew Bible, NRSV (OT), p. 568 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

Anthem (8:30) Carol Alexandre Guilmant

(11:00) The Virgin Mary Had A Baby Boy

Sunshine Singers The Virgin Mary had a baby boy, The Virgin Mary had a baby boy;

The Virgin Mary had a baby boy, and they said that His name was Jesus.

He comes from the glory, He comes from the glorious Kingdom.

He comes from the glory, He comes from the glorious Kingdom.

The angels sang-a when the baby was born, the angels sang-a when the baby was born;

The angels sang-a when the baby was born, and they said that his name was Jesus.

He comes from the glory, He comes from the glorious Kingdom.

He comes from the glory, He comes from the glorious Kingdom.

Time with the Children

New Testament Lesson: Philippians 2:1-11 Pew Bible, NRSV (NT), p. 197

Sermon “Unwrapping the Gift with Humility” Dr. John M. Willingham “And being found in human form, he humbled himself…” - Philippians 2:7b-8a

Responding to God’s Word *Hymn 146 Gentle Mary Laid Her Child TEMPUS ADEST FLORIDUM

*Affirmation of Faith John 1:1-5,10-14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him

not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was

the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome

it. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not

know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all

who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who

were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the

Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a

father's only son, full of grace and truth. Concerns of the Church

Today is the last week of our Angels Visit Shepherds Rotation. Kindergarten is in Games, 1st grade in Art, 2nd grade in Video and 3rd/4th in Drama. CONNECT will be reviewing all that they have studied in the Beginnings Unit with some fun activities. We’ll see you back in the classroom on January 7th, which begins our Exodus Rotation and CONNECT will begin Unit 2: The Promise.

Club 456 is looking forward to a fun Christmas celebration this Wednesday, December 20! All 4th, 5th and 6th graders are invited and urged to wear comfy pj’s and sneakers. We will have delicious food (there has been talk

of a dessert buffet) and play reindeer games (including, most likely, scatterball!). Santa hats and antlers are also encouraged!

Last week, we wrapped up a four week series on the Nativity to emphasize that Jesus’s birth, as well as his ministry, was radically inclusive. We explored the concept of “living water” and the kids had truly insightful observations about biblical themes. Club 456 will not meet December 27, but we can’t wait to begin a new series in the new year.

Live Nativity at Living Hope TODAY, 6 to 9 pm

We meet under the bridge at 6 pm, get dinner then head out. We return around 9 pm. The event is free but students need money for dinner and must have a permission slip. Dress warmly!

All Youth Winter Retreat February 2 to 4 at Tel Hai Retreat

Grow in faith and enjoy an incredible experience getting to know one another through games and worship. Our very own youth band will be leading worship. Cost is $140 and need based scholarships are available. The bus departs at 6:30 pm February 2 and we return to the Church 2:30 pm February 4. You won’t want to miss this weekend!

UPCOMING SPRING AND FALL SOUTHWEST MISSION TRIPS

Community Pantry in Gallup, NM, April 8-14. This is a work-only trip. We will help out in the pantry and gardens. The cost should be $700 to $900

(double) per person; $1,000 to $1,200 (single) per person, depending on airline costs.

Community Pantry in Gallup, NM, September 22-29. This is our “Regular” Work and Cultural Trip to the Navajo and Zuni reservations. This cost should be an additional $250 per person in expenses. A brochure will be available in the church office, library, and on the literature tables in Andrews Hall and the Church.

Repeat participants are welcome!

An information meeting for these trips will be held on Sunday, January 7, at 9:45 am in the Celtic Cross Room. Both trips provide a unique opportunity to see the fruits of DPC's continued involvement and commitment to helping Native Americans in the Southwest. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Lee or Brian Reiff at 215-348-9293 or [email protected].

PRESBYTERY MEETING HOSTING January 30, 11 am to 3 pm

We are excited to announce that DPC will be hosting the Philadelphia Presbytery meeting. Not only will we be welcoming many members of our Presbytery, we also will be part of the installation of our own Linda Rutkosky to the role of moderator of the Philadelphia Presbytery. What an exciting time for Linda, DPC and the Philadelphia Presbytery. We will need many hands to help make this event successful. If you are available to help on this day, please let the church office know. We have many jobs that need filled to make it a great day for everyone!

KEEP AN EYE OUT! Special invitations in the Lessons and Carols program and Christmas Eve bulletin.

The Outreach Committee ask that you share these invitations with your friends and neighbors and invite them to DPC!

The Lord’s Prayer (Traditional)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever, Amen.

UPCOMING Events

5

ONGOING Classes GOOD NEWS AND THE OTHER NEWS. Current events are discussed while reflecting upon the story from the perspective of faith. Today—Prince Harry and Meghan

Markle Announce Their Engagement. On November 27, the UK's Prince Charles announced the engagement of his son, Prince Harry and American actor Meghan Markle. While this seems to fall under the category of celebrity news, the fact that Markle is American, divorced, biracial and that the royal family has welcomed the engagement is a change from past traditions that have marked the British monarchy. This news gives us an opportunity to examine the value we place on tradition and to consider how our children see the world differently. It also lets us think about what God's role is in a world of change. Led by Jay Stough, AH-207 iLIGHT. For those navigating career and family whether married, single, parent or not, we offer diverse topics and formats. All are welcome! Today. Which One…Matthew or Luke? The Gospels of Matthew and Luke offer different genealogies for Jesus. Why are these family trees included in the Good News? Some of them we easily recognize, some we know we've heard of...but can't remember, and others we have no clue how to even pronounce their name. All are welcome as we explore the family Jesus was born into and how we too are part of that family. Join us for this special Advent conversation! Led by Pauline Sexton, AH-211 MAN-TALK. We address problems seldom discussed. Presented by a Christian professional or Bible scholar. Coordinated by Lou Zoppel. Today—Faith in God. As part of a new series on Faith in God, this first message will be an introduction to faith, how the Bible defines faith and why it is so important to our Heavenly Father. Led by, AH-120 THE WORD AMONG US. An in-depth Bible study that welcomes all to explore Scripture. We are studying 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, and Ephesians. These four letters from Paul deal with problems of divisions and debates within the

church, immoral behavior among some of the early Christians, and theological questions arising from false teachers. Led by Dick Cornelius and Margaret Thoresen, AH-209

SPECIAL Classes BE A WALKING PRAYER. Prayer is often approached as something we say to God—learn ways to allow God to speak to you so prayer becomes a conversation. Today—The Practice of Prayer Led by Steph Heilakka, AH-213 INTERNET SECURITY AND SAFETY CONCERNS Join us as we learn how to protect ourselves from cyber thieves, hackers and online extortionists and our children and grandchildren from Cyberbullying. January 7—Be Cyber-Aware. Learn how to keep your online information safe. January 14—Cyber Security Threats. Understand and protect yourself from cyber security threats. January 21—Cyberbullying. Learn what it is and how it impacts young people and what steps to take to protect your child or grandchild. January 28—CyberSmart. Learn about social media and apps such as Instagram and Snapchat, what to be aware of regarding these and newer, less-common apps. Led by Ann Petro, DPC member and Danielle Hudak, Network of Victim Assistance, AH-Room 213

OBERAMMERGAU TRIP in 2020

Beginning in 1634, the small Bavarian town of Oberammergau, Germany, began to offer a Passion Play depicting the life and death of Jesus. It started as the fulfilment of a promise to God if they were spared the Bubonic Plague sweeping through Europe. Since that initial performance, the community has offered the Passion Play each year that ends in zero.

On June 30, 2020, John and Lori Willingham will begin a tour for persons who would like to experience first-hand that dramatic offering. The journey will start in Vienna and continue to Salzburg before heading to Oberammergau and concluding in Munich. Over the course of ten days, our group will celebrate the gift of music—religious and secular—that has shaped us.

Even though the event is more than two years away, tickets for May 2020 are already sold-out in Oberammergau. Thus, we are hosting an informational meeting January 10 at 7 pm in CCR for persons interested in learning more. Join us!
