CHRISTMAS EVE

A FESTIVAL OF NINE LESSONS AND CAROLS

†††

Welcome

(For those who are able, please stand for the portions of the service that are marked with an *)

* Opening Hymn “O Come, All Ye Faithful” Hymnal page 379

* Invocation

P In the name of the Father and of the Son T and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen

* Lighting of the Advent Candles

P Darkness cannot overcome the light. Five flames remind us that the light of the Christ

child defeats the deepest depths of darkness and brings life and immortality to light. One

candle is lit to remind us of hope.

C The prophets foretold a Messiah to come. People waited in expectation. Hope was

fulfilled.

P One candle is lit to remind us of love.

C God poured out his heart in the form of his Son. The Child was born of a woman.

Love was fulfilled.

P One candle is lit to remind us of joy.

C Angels sang “Gloria.” Shepherds ran to tell. Joy was fulfilled.

P One candle is lit to remind us of peace.

C The Prince of Peace was promised. The Child was peace in human form. Peace was

fulfilled.

P One white candle is lit to remind us of Jesus—sinless, spotless, shining, pure.

C His star is shining this night, making us whiter than snow.

* Confession and Absolution

P The Psalmist said, “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and

the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the Son

of man that you care for him?” The sheer number of stars sometimes makes us feel

insignificant. But our sin makes us more than insignificant; it condemns us to darkness

and death. Let us confess our sins to God, our heavenly Father.

Silence for self-examination…

P We confess,

C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting

life.

P On Christmas Eve Jesus was born to shine the light and love of God to a world filled with

darkness and sin. His light has conquered the darkness, and his death and resurrection

have given birth to forgiveness and life. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of the

Word, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the T Son and of the

Holy Spirit. And all God’s people said,

C Amen.

* Prayer of the Day

P Let us pray. O Jesus, on this night the beam of your light shines forth from the manger for

all the world to see. As it reaches our eyes enable us to take in the love and peace it

contains. Then let the warm glow you have placed in our hearts shine forth so that others

see the glory of your light and your love. For your light is always new, never ending, ever

shining.

C Amen.

The Gathering of the Offerings (We encourage our visitors and members to sign the red Friendship booklet located in each pew)

* Prayers Each petition ends with the response: P O Son of God,

C shine your light on us and save us.

P Lord Jesus Christ, your birth brought light into a world filled with the darkness of sin.

As angels sang and shepherds looked up into the sky, so shall we sing “alleluias” and

gaze in wonder at the glory of your love. Be born in us anew,

C shine your light on us and save us.

P Lord Jesus Christ, you are the Prince of Peace who was peaceably laid in a manger.

Grant our world the peace that only you can bring, where kings bow down to you and

leaders seek to serve you. O Prince of Peace,

C shine your light on us and save us.

P Lord Jesus Christ, you rule your church with a love that surpasses all limits and grace

that stretches far beyond the outer reaches of the universe. Bind in our hearts a love for

those who do not yet know you, that they, too, would receive the priceless gifts of your

love and grace. O King,

C shine your light on us and save us.

P Lord Jesus Christ, in your life you brought health and healing to those who sat in the

darkness of illness and disease. According to your will, grant the favor of that same

health and healing to those in need who are near and dear to us. O Healer of the Nations,

C shine your light on us and save us.

P Lord Jesus Christ, bring the bright beams of hope upon us, your people, as we welcome

you into our hearts and homes. And keep us ever watchful for your second coming that

we may greet you again with joy. O Light of the World,

C shine your light on us and save us.

P All other concerns we bring before you, Lord Jesus, in the prayer you taught us:

C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will

be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our

trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever

and ever. Amen.

* The Lighting of the Candles

(As the flames are taken from the Christ candle, they will be passed to each aisle and each worshipper is asked to light his/her candle from the previously lighted one. Please dip the UNLIGHTED candle into the lighted one to avoid wax spills. When every candle is lit the following carol will be sung. At the end of this singing you may extinguish your candle.)

* Hymn “Silent Night, Holy Night” Hymnal page 363

1 Silent night, holy night!

All is calm, all is bright

Round yon virgin mother and child.

Holy Infant, so tender and mild,

Sleep in heavenly peace,

Sleep in heavenly peace.

2 Silent night, holy night!

Shepherds quake at the sight;

Glories stream from heaven afar,

Heav’nly hosts sing, Alleluia!

Christ, the Savior, is born!

Christ, the Savior, is born!

3 Silent night, holy night!

Son of God, love’s pure light

Radiant beams from Thy holy face

With the dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth,

Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

* Benediction Hymnal page 377, v. 4

P All out of darkness we have light,

C Which made the angels sing this night:

P “Glory to God and peace to men

C Now and forevermore. Amen.”

P The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.

C Amen.

* Closing Hymn “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” Hymnal page 380

1 Hark! The herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King;

Peace on earth and mercy mild,

God and sinners reconciled!”

Joyful, all ye nations, rise,

Join the triumph of the skies;

With the angelic host proclaim,

“Christ is born in Bethlehem!”

Hark! The herald angels sing,

“Glory to the new born King!”

2 Christ, by highest heav’n adored,

Christ, the everlasting Lord,

Late in time behold Him come,

Offspring of a virgin’s womb.

Veiled in flesh the God-head see,

Hail the incarnate Deity!

Pleased as Man with man to dwell,

Jesus, our Immanuel!

Hark! The herald angels sing,

“Glory to the new born King!”

3 Hail, the heav’n-born Prince of Peace!

Hail, the Sun of Righteousness!

Light and life to all He brings,

Ris’n with healing in His wings.

Mild He lays His glory by,

Born that man no more may die,

Born to raise the sons of earth,

Born to give them second birth.

Hark! The herald angels sing,

“Glory to the new born King!”
