Resident Art ShowThe paintings of one of our owners and a member of our art group, Stella Hesketh, were featured in the month of December at the Richview Public Library. Some of her displayed works are shown below at the library.

According to Stella, she did not begin painting until she was 50. She “fearfully” started in a TDSB Learn for Life class and has been going back ever since. She credits a great teacher by the name of Zaria. Doris Pontieri of the Artworld Fine Art Gallery taught Stella more about painting, and Stella has added a couple of other art classes with artists in the public domain. Stella credits the teachers whose great skills have shown her how to paint, and given her so much joy that she can’t stop and has to keep going. So 20 years later, she is still going to art class and loving it.Bravo Stella from all of us. Perhaps you will be the first of the new Islington Group of Eight!!.

For those of you inspired by Stella’s accomplishments, our own art classes restart on Tuesdays at 1:00 pm under the direction of Larry Marno (416-716-4164), our resident art instructor. Call him if you are interested and he will help you get started.

Behind the scenes - how do we get our hot and cold water? Our fresh and hot water supply system consists of three components besides pipes: hot water storage tanks; boilers; and cold water booster pumps.

TwoHotWaterStorageTanks–HighZoneThis photo (left) shows two domestic hot water storage tanks which are for the higher floors in the building. There are also two more storage tanks for the lower level floors. The storage tanks are designed to store and hold potable water at 130 ⁰F.

BoilersThe photo on the right shows the three DynaFlame Hydronic Heating Boilers which are fired by natural gas. These boilers are designed for hydronic heating, which produces heat for our fan coils in the winter, as well as domestic hot water.

ColdWaterBoosterPumpsControlsEach building has cold water booster pumps designed to deliver constant water pressure under variable flow demands. The photo on the left shows the main cold water booster pump controls. There are two motorized pumps directly behind the controls. These booster pumps supply potable cold water to the suites as well as water to the boilers for domestic hot water and heating for the fan coils.

Our manager, Antonello, and our Supers, Tony and Paulo, are required to check these systems daily and ensure that they are operating correctly. Otherwise we might

find ourselves taking a shower with dry air!!

Las Vegas evening at the condo

On October 22, 2016, the Oasis Residents Club held a Las Vegas Fund Raiser in support of the SickKids Foundation.

The evening included slot machines, roulette wheels, blackjack, lucky draws and auctions. The event raised $2,680.

We would like to thank our residents, our sponsors and all of our volunteers. This is just one of the social activities held at our condo to raise funds for charity.

Can You Save a Life?A study conducted by Sunnybrook Hospital determined that it takes 8.1 minutes on average for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to arrive on a scene when dispatched. Add on time to call an elevator and get up to the upper floors of a condo. The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada states that a person in cardiac arrest has a 10% less chance of survival for every minute they are not defibrillated. If a person is defibrillated in the first four minutes of cardiac arrest, they have over a 50% chance of survival.

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are becoming common in many areas including condominiums, recreational centres, hockey rinks and airports. We have them at our condos: two at 2010 Islington on the P1 level and 18th floor across from Ste 1805; one in 2000 on the P1 level, and one in the Recreation Centre on the wall south of the library. They are housed in alarmed cabinets convenient for people to pull out and use in emergencies.

AEDs are very affordable (average price of an AED is under $2,000 at any Shoppers Home Health Care) and are easy to use for lay rescuers. You cannot harm a person when using one. If a person collapses, is not responding and not breathing, the rescuer should call 911 and proceed to get

the AED. Once the AED is turned on, it will instruct the rescuer how to proceed with voice prompts. Once the electrodes (pads) have been placed on the person

according to the instructions, the AED will then determine if the person needs a shock.

They are user friendly. If a shock is determined, the AED will guide the user to stand clear and proceed to shock. The AED stuns the heart momentarily and hopes the heart will pick up a normal rhythm again. If so, the person has just been saved.

This device has saved many lives at locations around Ontario. The Heart & Stroke Foundation statistics show cardiac arrests happen in the home setting over 75% of the time. With an 8.1 minute response time for EMS to arrive, the AED is well worth the investment. It is best to be prepared. Your life could count on it! It is highly recommended that people receive a 3-4 hour course in CPR and AED so they feel very comfortable in the operation and maintenance of the unit. Management plans to run such courses in the new year if there is sufficient interest amongst owners.

Oasis Halloween and Octoberfest PartyAbout 50 residents came out to celebrate Halloween and Octo-berfest. There were many great costumes, particularly those worn by Rosalie and Doug. As always, music was provided by Roy Meleca and had the people dancing. A good time was had by all.

Holiday Gratuity FundEvery year at Christmas time, owners show their appreciation to the staff of our condominiums by contributing money to our Holiday Gratuity Fund for staff. Staff include our cleaners, security personnel, our Supers, and Management staff. This year, 219 units contributed a total of $13,620.00. The money was apportioned between 16 staff and handed out on Friday, Dec. 23rd. The committee managing the fund was made up of owners.

Many thanks to ownersManagement, Superintendents, Petto’s Cleaning Personnel and Fortress Security Guards would like to thank all residents who contributed to the Holiday Gratuity Fund for staff. Your kind generosity was gratefully received,

deeply felt and hugely appreciated. Thank you and Happy New Year to all!

Who stole my pants from the locker room? When I came out of the pool into the locker room, I discovered to my dismay and embarrassment that someone had stolen my trousers. Imagine having to come up to the office without any trousers on to report the incident to management. Whoever took them, please return them to the locker room and that’ll be the end of it. I was rather attached to them and it is cold out there without trousers. It looks like the Board will have to add another rule to the rule book - do not take someone else’s trousers from the locker room.(Editor’s note; a true story)

New Director joins MTCC 570 BoardWelcome to Sandro Fasciani as a new member of the Board of MTCC 570. With a certificate in business administration from Seneca college, Sandro has worked for one of the largest road building companies in Canada and was responsible for establishing their health and safety department.

He has attended tribunal hearings and constantly interacted with the

Construction Safety Association. He has organized safety meetings for employees and kept management apprised of ongoing changes and improvements to the Health and Safety Act.

For the last 5 years, he has been employed at Innocon Inc. which supplies concrete to building sites, most of which are new condominiums. He is familiar with current methods used in the construction of condominiums.

Workplace Violence and Harassment PolicyAll residents, employees, and contractors are reminded that a workplace violence and harassment policy is in effect at 2010/2000 Islington. The Boards of Directors of the two Corporations are committed to the prevention of workplace violence and harassment and enforcement of this Policy.

Workplace Harassment means engaging in a course of vexatious comments or conduct against a person in the workplace, be it an employee, contractor, or resident, and will not be tolerated from any person. It does not include differences of opinion or minor disagreements or reasonable action or conduct by an employee or management that is part of his or her normal work function (i.e. changes in work assignment, scheduling, job assessment and evaluation, workplace inspections, implementation of dress codes and disciplinary action).

Everyone is expected to uphold this policy, and will be held accountable to the Board of Directors.

Harassment may also relate to a form of discrimination under the Ontario Human Rights Code.

Proper Locker-Room EtiquetteManagement has received several complaints that some users of the locker rooms are not showing respect for others.

Benches are for sitting - not piling your clothes and towels on them thus preventing others from sitting and getting dressed. Hangers and lockers are for your clothes and towels so please

show some consideration for your fellow man and woman and neaten up.
