◗ Aledo fi nishing preparations for Holiday CelebrationBy Katie MartinezThe Community News

Celebrating more than a decade of Christmas Tyme tradition, the city is hard at work with prepara-tions for Aledo’s Christmas Tyme celebration on Dec. 3.

Angela Kell, events planner for the city and Mrs. Claus to the chil-dren who visit Santa at his work-shop inside the community center, has been working behind the scenes since September to plan this year’s event.

A lot goes in to putting on a city wide celebration, from bringing in sponsors and working with local businesses to coordinating with health inspectors, planning com-mittees and city administration.

Aledo Mayor Kit Marshall said the event, in its 11th year, is always changing and evolving – and it gets better every year.

“Christmas Tyme is a really fun, family-friendly event that showcas-es all the things that make Aledo great,” she said. “It introduces the community to our local businesses and gives the community the oppor-tunity to usher in the Christmas season together.”

Kell, who is working on her sec-ond Christmas Tyme event, said after fi nishing her shift as Mrs. Claus last year, she was excited to see the fruits of all her labor.

“I remember I jumped in my car and went around to all the different locations, I wanted to see how all of our ideas were playing out,” she said. “It was great; kids were mak-ing s’mores and people were really having a great time.”

The most wonderful Tyme of the year

The event faced uncertainty when the East Parker County Chamber, which had always sponsored the event, decided not to continue, but Aledo’s Economic Development Corporation picked up the reigns and with the help of community sponsors has continued the tradi-tion without a hitch.

Marshall said that she spends a lot of her time on the wagon talk-ing to people about the history of the city and how the city has grown and changed, while still retaining its small-town charm.

“That makes it hard for me to get around and see all the other events, and I’m torn by that,” she said. “I do absolutely love sharing with people the history of our city – but I would also love to participate in all the activities going on all over town.”

The arts and crafts fair has been held at the Community Center in Aledo for the last 34 years, Kell said. It’s an important tradition in the city and Marshall said Christmas Tyme was structured to enhance the fair and help the local artists as well as the businesses.

Kell said she and her family are really looking forward to seeing what Milestone Portraits and the Bird’s Nest Salon are going to do, because their event is new this year. They will have a bounce house for the kids along with airbrush tattoos and an outdoor Christmas movie.

Marshall, who has been involvedwith planning the event since itsinception 11 years ago, said her favorite thing about the event is – everything.

“I don’t think I can pick one eventover another because what I loveabout Christmas Tyme in Aledo isthe way all the facets come together to make one fabulous event,” shesaid.

◗ Christmas on the Square in Weatherford has a new time this year, but everyone’s favorite events haven’t changed.Special to The Community News

Everyone is excited about Christmas on the Square and, as always, there will be lots of fun festivities to enjoy.

The event is free to the public and will take place on Saturday, Dec. 3 with a new time from noon to 5 p.m. a the Historic Downtown Weatherford Square.

The Annual Christmas Parade will kick off the event, starting at

10 a.m. at the Ninth Grade Center and following its route down South Main and west around the Square.

The theme for this year’s event will be “Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow” and many of the down-town shops and businesses will be decorated to refl ect their inter-pretations of the classic Christmas tune.

During the more than 20-year tradition of Christmas on the Square, the event has continued to grow.

Attendance got a huge boost a few years ago, when it was moved to Saturday.

Christmas 2011 – Birth of a New TraditionEditor’s Note: The following commentary has been adapted from an email that has been making the rounds.

As the holidays approach, the giant foreign factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with mon-strous piles of cheaply produced goods – merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift given time, nothing can be found that is pro-duced by American hands. Yes there is!

It’s time to think outside the box. Who says a gift needs to fi t in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper? Everyone – yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certifi cates from your local hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It’s appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn’t appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, local-owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certifi cate or a book of gift certifi cates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamins on a Chinese made fl at-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are numerous owner-run res-taurants – all offering gift certifi cates. And, if your intended isn’t the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn’t about big National chains – this is about support-ing your home town merchants and services with their fi nancial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn’t use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcy-cle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would love the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

Perhaps someone’s computer could use a tune-up; there is probably some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and potteryand beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre.

Musicians need love too, so fi nd a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, do you really need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a $5 string of lights, about fi fty cents stays in the com-munity. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mail carrier, trash guy or babysitter a nice big tip.

Christmas is now about caring about our neighbors, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the bene-fi ts come back to us in ways we couldn’t imagine. This can be the new American Christmas tradition.

Have yourself a Natural Little Christmas

◗ Bring Mother Nature inside to create an elegant holiday homeBy Jessica AbelsCTW Features

Sometimes taking a stroll into the holi-day-decorating aisles of your local store can feel more like falling through Alice’s rabbit hole. With everything from ani-matronic snowmen to psychedelic-lighted tree toppers, it can be tempting to go Mad Hatter and get carried away. But there’s a reason why no one sings “Deck the halls with plastic metallic tinsel.” This holiday season, why not let the original interior designer, Mother Nature, have command over your home?

Mar Jennings, a Westport, Conn.-based lifestyle expert, author and TV personality, likes to incorporate a number of natural elements into his holiday decorating.

While he says those boughs of holly and evergreen branches are great places to start, there are many other, more unex-pected ways to go au natural.

“I love to take a lemon and slice it in half to make a little mini lemon bouquet,” Jennings says. “There’s nothing better in the winter than to get a burst of citrus color.”

He incorporates more lemons, along with limes, by hollowing each fruit out to make just enough space for a small votive. Jennings calls them “lemon lights” and “lime lights” and says they “bring texture and color that are great for parties.”

At the table, Jennings suggests creating place cards using a metallic pen to write names on magnolia leaves, as well as using non-blooming fi g tree leaves as placemats.

“I also like to take cranberries, barley or coffee beans and put them in glasses and put a tea light or small candle in them,” he says. “It creates different levels of illumination using things from my pantry.

“When I do table arrangements, I use one vase and put another inside and line the wall of the outer vase with halved Brussels sprouts. That’s another way of getting something organic on the table.”

When it comes to the tree, however, Jennings says you may want to consider the artifi cial route.

“One thing more and more is that arti-fi cial trees are becoming so real,” he says. “Using an artifi cial tree is not a bad idea, especially when you can’t tell it’s artifi cial.

Back to the basics: Hand the reins over to Mother Nature (and décor expert Mar Jennings) for holiday-decorating ideas that pack a green punch.

It’s a great choice and with all the live trees we cut down each year, it helps the environment.”

He suggests creating a more natural look for the tree by taking your least favor-ite ornaments, or ones that are slightly damaged, and coating them with sand or moss using adhesive spray.

“Taking an old ornament that you nor-mally wouldn’t put on, you can completely redo the surface and make it brand new,” he says. “It creates a more organic look than you would expect on a tree.” This can also be a fun activity for the whole family, he says.

“Craft stores have wonderful things to get kids involved and make ornaments that last,” he says. “I try to get kids involved so they appreciate where they were that year they made the ornament, and to kind of keep in mind the traditions and history of the holiday by remembering the past.”
