Art Murmur is one of a number of recurring cultural events taking place in Oakland between Jack London Square + the Uptown District. This location is a frequent nexus for cultural, social + political activity, while also acting as public transit intersection of Downtown Oakland through the MacAurthur Maze. It is a highly traversed interface between people and cultures, visitors and residents, and the cities of Oakland, San Francisco, Berkeley and beyond. The prospect of this Fashion Performance + Exhibition Labs, is to mix this physical nexus with dynamic spaces for expression + creativity.

This cultural corridor extends conditions which exert strong forces upon the site, including: frequency, duration, attendance density, publicity and notoriety. These external forces, in conjunction with local conditions generate formal deformations which not only shape the building envelope, but internal circulation and program organization as well.

    FORM CATALOGUE

This exercise in form generation is conceived through structural + spatial observation of four categories of human bones. A series of self similar components are generated as a result of these observations, whereafter, another class of generative, aggregate components were created from the original components.

    URBAN ANCHORS

A series of performative actions are extracted from urban + social

observations, such as grafting, implanting + bloating.

The extracted performative actions are digitally conceptualized + interpreted as program usage, duration, frequency + density.

  • From Bud to Bloomyear | instructor spring 2012 | Doron Serban

    location San Francisco, California

The intention of this work is a critical analysis + appreciation of the simple yet complex mechanics of biological systems. The analysis is to lead to an architectural + spatial understanding of the bio system. The event analyzed is the blooming of a Moon Flower. The recorded event is defined by both expansion and rotation in simultaneous action. These variables are the generative tools of form finding through encoded data.

    CODING + ANNOTATION

Major points of movement were identified as two sets of 5 points. Objects within the parameters of 10 + 5 were evaluated while be manipulated to demonstrate the outcome of state actions. Rotation manipulation of said objects are held within the parameter variables of 5, 12, 48, 55 + 90.

  • MORPHOLOGY :PHYCODURUS EQUES :: LEAFY SEADRAGONyear | instructor fall 2013 | Alexa Getting

    location San Francisco, California

A process of digitally generated morphology examined the growth and movement patterns of exotic creatures. Here, the Australian native, Phycodurus Eques, or Leafy Seadragon influenced the produced catalogue of biomimetic forms as consequence of the examined qualities of the creature.

  • Golden Gate Acting Academyyear | instructor fall 2011 | Karen Seong + Jennifer Asselstine

    location San Francisco, California

The atmosphere + historic arts + music culture of Haight-Ashbury is perfectly conducive to the development of an institution where creativity is intended to flourish. The condition of the community sees homeless youth living in Golden Gate Park, for reasons ranging from hostile home environments to drug addictions. This Acting Academys intention is to begin to create a safe, open environment, implementing a health clinic as well as other mental health + rehab services. The journey to becoming an actor or actress is an incredibly vulnerable + transformative experience, just the same as ones journey to heal on the inside.

    location San Francisco, California

Site analysis revealed prominent weather conditions which influenced orientation, form and applicable systems. Wind is the most noticeable feature of the location, which led to my use of image collection + extraction to develop an exercise in pattern emergence. The exercise influenced the overall architectural form, as well as circulation + spatial experience.

    location San Francisco, California

    collaboration Nasira Fabelhaft

The mission of the Hayes Valley Urban Health Center is to generate an accredited school with the means to educate local youth + young adults in the mental + physical rehabilitation of San Franciscos indigent population, while housing a number of those in need, during their rehabilitation process.

Assisted by state + federal grants focusing on the care + welfare of indigent populations, + augmented by financial agreements with other local universities in exchange for field placement at this facility.

450 Hayes St is located in the heart of Hayes Valley, San Francisco, a rejuvinated neighborhood filled with high-end fashion boutiques, top notch restraunts, So-Ho style funky art galleries and hip nightsopts (-SFgate). The high energy of this local culture shines light into the attitude and indentity of Hayes Valley. Site Analysis revealed that this neighborhood certainly does not lack entertainment venues or a good place to enjoy a relaxing dinner and drinks, however, independent social choice exhibits itself as a desirable cultural factor in engaging oneself in Hayes Valle and is the heart beat of the locals.

Environmentally, Site Analysis revealed 450 Hayes St to have excellent Southern Solar exposure to optomize summer solar energy and winter solar heating

Inside Patricias Green is community filled with energy and a common ideal of enjoying life. Children run and play on the playground, many line up at Smitten ice cream to get their delicious fix of sweets, while the rest enojoy their lunch on park benches while soaking up the sun before returning to work.
