Fergus Henderson

The operation marked what I call my “renaissance” - and as many as one in four of those afflicted by Parkinson’s can benefit from this surgery. Professor Marwan Hariz, Dr Patricia Limousin and the team at Queen Square London are refining the technique and helping to break new ground. Their work deserves your generous support.”Michael Holman

Before my DBS operation, I suffered from daily ‘freezing’ which made me feel like a statue on a plinth - not able to show any facial emotion or move easily from one position to another. After my DBS operation, I regained the ability to smile and express normal emotions. My life has been transformed thanks to Professor Hariz, his team and The Parkinson’s Appeal.Stuart Carter

Professor Marwan Hariz and team, whose work is funded by The Parkinson’s Appeal for Deep Brain Stimulation, are truly amazing. I am so grateful to be under their care and have never met a team more talented, compassionate and totally dedicated to helping improve the lives of people like me. Amy Westall

When my brilliant charismatic husband Mo, a movie mogul in the true sense of the word, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 8 years ago, our lives changed dramatically. There are 120,000 sufferers in Britain – among the over sixty-five’s the rate is one person in one hundred. Parkinson’s does not always kill its victims but it kills their way of life.

I recently saw a plaque inscribed “The gen-erosity of few is the hope of many”. This could have been written of Simon Sainsbury without whom we would not have been for-tunate enough to have secured the services of the world renowned neurosurgeon Professor Marwan Hariz, who relocated from Sweden to form a team at University College Hospital, Queen Square, London, to perform a pioneer-ing procedure called Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). This miraculous surgery has changed the lives of many sufferers worldwide and his research has lead to DBS being used for many other movement disorders such as Dystonia, Tourettes, severe Obsessive Compulsive dis-order, some cases of Epilepsy that cannot be treated with drugs and deafferentation (phan-tom pain).

Both Fergus and I have been overwhelmed by the immensely generous response of all the artists, photographers, designers, event organiser Urban Caprice, everyone at St John,

especially Trevor Gulliver, Nicky Keane of JB Pelham PR who has worked many long hours, Christie’s and particularly Jussi Pylkkanen; all have contributed to the Auction on Octo-ber 16th and without whom this event would never have happened.

We are much indebted to the artists’ deal-ers who without exception have waived their fee to support the appeal. We are also ex-tremely grateful to our advisory committee, Sadie Coles, Kay Hartenstein-Saatchi, Stewart Grimshaw, Jussi Pylkkanen, Johnathan Ruth-erfurd Best, Martin Westall, Jasmin Pelham, Marion Naggar, Meredith Etherington-Smith and Francesca Amfitheatrof, who despite their busy schedules have worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of the event.

Last, but very much not least, The Monu-ment Trust, The Edmond J. Safra Founda-tion, The Peacock Trust, Culture Shock, Emily James, Dan Lywood, Piers Thompson and Roy Smiljanic for their generous and invaluable contributions. There are so many of you here tonight who have generously contributed over the years, enabling Professor Hariz and his team to continue this important research. Thank you all.

In the words of one patient “This operation has given me back my self esteem, human dignity and quite frankly my life.”

“I was desperate. Then I was chosen to be Professor Marwan Hariz’s 1st patient for Deep Brain Stimulation at the National Hospital. I can never say thank you loudly enough or often enough to Professor Hariz for his unexampled skill in giving back to me an ordinary life and

the desire to live that life, and to the Parkinson’s Appeal for funding my surgery.”

Dear Lyn Your latest child, nick-named U-FuN (Unit of Functional Neurosurgery) will celebrate its 5th year in October 2007. You entrusted the custody of the U-FuN to the Institute of Neurology and the National Hospital of Neurology and Neuro-surgery at Queen Square.

As Head of the U-FuN, I feel very sorry and frustrated that I cannot be personally with, and among, you at this wonderful art event. But be assured that my thoughts are there, and may I take this occasion of our Unit´s birthday anniversary, to congratulate you on such an endeavour: From nothing you created every-thing; thanks to you, more than 135 patients so far have been able to undergo the deep brain stimulation procedure aimed at alleviating the symptoms of their Parkinson´s disease or dystonia or essential tremor, all of which pro-voke disorders with uncontrollable movements that impair the quality of these patients’ lives. Several of the patients of the U-FuN have be-come so enthusiastic about the success of their treatment that they have become fund-raisers together with you.

Our Unit can still not “walk” independently; it still needs your help and the help of those around you, in order to continue expanding and providing surgical treatment and pre-and post-operative care to more and more patients.

Dear Lyn, this continuing need for your sup-port is actually a clear sign of success; because that success has in turn generated the need for more resources and more staff in the U-FuN, the needs for funds are increasing, and cannot be met but by your dedication and charity, as an important complement to university and state-delivered funds. This will ensure a con-tinuation and expansion of the service and the research at the Unit. Dear Lyn, as mother of the U-FuN, and on behalf of my colleagues, I wish to congratulate you on all your achievements, and we hope that you will be proud of your creation so far and for the many years to come.

Warmest thoughts

Yours, faithfully

George Parsons
