In the Greek, only one of these elements is an imperative verb (i.e. a verb of command). The other three elements are what grammarians (which I am not) call participles. They tell us how to carry out the force of the command. For instance, I might say to my daughter, "Clean your room, vacuum, dust and make the bed!" In my appeal, the command is "clean your room." "Vacuuming, dusting and making the bed" instruct my daughter on exactly how to go about carrying out the command to "clean." The command of the Great Commission is: MAKE DISCIPLES. We would define a disciple as "a learner-follower of Jesus Christ." We make disciples by going and baptizing and teaching them to obey Christ. In making a disciple of Jesus Christ, first, we must GO to where individuals need the gospel. This includes places where Christians may not likely be expected to be. The worship leader from my first church was met in the bar of all places. He was very talented and after we shared Jesus with him we recruited him to lead worship. Next, the commission assumes that we will share the Good News of Jesus and call people to obedient faith in Him. In the New Testament the culmination of faith in Christ always displays itself in Christian BAPTISM. Here at FCC we practice full immersion because that is the example set for us by Jesus. Finally, we must TEACH the new convert everything Jesus has commanded us. Many people in the church seem to believe that the task of evangelism is over when an individual is "toweling off" after their baptism. Nothing could be further from the truth. Our job of "making a disciple" is just beginning when a person comes to Christ. The task of God's people is to bring to maturity those who give their lives to Christ. Jesus never asked us to go into the world and make church members. He asked us to make disciples. A disciple is a learner and a follower whose greatest goal is to be like his master in everything he says and does. Often people make the theological error that separates evangelism from discipleship. In the Great Commission, there is no such separation. To evangelize is to make disciples of Jesus. Let us make no mistake about it. Evangelism is not simply learning Bible facts. Evangelism is not simply understanding what other people believe about Jesus. Evangelism is taking part in God’s great work of redeeming the world through Christ. It is to reach out and allow God’s power and presence to extend into the lives of people through our daily lives. When we increasingly become aware of God working within us, the result will be joy--joy in our daily tasks and joy in the lives we touch. Wherever God’s will is done, the ultimate result for us will be joy. Then those famous words from Jesus’ parable will become the reality of our lives: "Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master." IRS is processing our application to be declared a tax-exempt organization in accordance with Code 501©(3). This will help us avoid some sales taxes, help us get deep discounts on certain purchases (e.g. software), and assist us when applying for grants where an IRS tax-exempt number is required.

The IRS has determined that the “Purpose Statement” in our FCC Constitution (Article I Section B) is not adequate to meet their Code requirements and is asking that a suitable amendment be made. To amend our Constitution, it must be done by a vote of the congregation after a two-week notice in advance. Therefore, it is proposed to add a second sentence to our Purpose Statement to meet the IRS request. This sentence would read: “First Christian Church is organized exclusively for religious purposes under Section 501©(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or corresponding section of any future tax code”. This was announced in services June 12th, and will be voted on at close of services June 26, 2016.

Hey everybody!

I just want to thank everyone who was a part

of VBS this past week whether you were

physically there or praying for the event. We

had such an awesome time and couldn’t be

more ecstatic with how the program went.

Throughout the course of the week we had

130 different students learn about Christ, and

over $1,000 was raised and will be put

towards Hidden Haven Christian Camp

tuition. If you were there on Sunday you

were able to see that we had a great group of

kids and had a whole lot of fun.

I’ve got some announcements for you.

If your child is going to need a ride to

Hidden Haven Christian Camp this

summer there are sign up sheets on the

youth bulletin board in the Fellowship

Hall for you to sign up your student in

their respective camps.

Also I want to announce that we will be

going to Mike & Eileen Burns place

Sunday, June 26th for our B.O.S Bash

(Beginning of Summer). It starts at 3:00

pm. This is for Junior High and High

School students to kick off their summer

with a bang!

Thank you everybody for doing what you do

for our youth!!

Brett Hartman, Youth Minister
