West Area Minister The Constant/Inconsistent Church The church has always been a refuge, a safe harbor offering shelter through life’s storms. Whether outlaws seeking the safety of the sanctu-ary or simple folk like us, seekers of Christ and deeper spirituality, we ask the church to take us in and hold us for a while. The church is a vessel into which we may pour ourselves knowing we will find reassurance and rest. As we know all too well, the church is constant in its presence but always growing and evolving like some divine amoeba. The church may move in one direction but its boundaries ebb and flow. Sundry factors create this malleable environment, many of them thoroughly out of anyone’s control. Yet, in this uncertain environment molded and melded by economic uncertainty, fluctuating social norms, reprioritization and yes, apathy, we continue to yearn for the shelter of this community. However and whenever we choose to enter this family of faith, we find rooted-ness, sanctuary and belonging. We need this – this security of belonging to a peo-ple and a God. I wonder if this is not why the church exists. Not so much as a “house of worship” and not even so much for God, but because where “two or three are gathered” the body of Christ is our refuge, our strength. We find these gatherings among our church buildings, our seminaries and our camps. I have often wondered how church-goers can attend church for years and not become members of the church. I find I thrive in the identity of a particular church and I cannot “not” belong officially to a church community. Some folk simply say they aren’t “joiners”; again, this is a difficult concept for me to grasp. The idea isn’t rocket science, and I’m not “joining” the Eastern Star or the Rotary. When I transfer my membership to a church, I become a part of the spiritual woof and warp of the church community; it has nothing to do with becoming a “card-carrying” member. I “belong” to a community, a family. My prayer for all of us is that we may find our-selves always within a Christian community, among those desiring safe harbor and family. Grace and Peace,

Thank you for the Response! In our last edition of the West Area Coordinator we alerted you to the fact that the ice machine was shot. Thank you for the great response! We would like to report that the ice machine is paid for and in place. The campers, staff and especially the cook, Neda Gilbert appreciate hav-ing a functioning machine! We also sent out a Camp Needs letter and the response again was exceptional. We raised funds, which allows us to cover caretaker expense through December 2010. We thank you for the wonderful response. It has been great reading the notes attached to the checks. “I ♥ KBY!” “I attended in the 60’s –we slept in hogans. My kids attended years Later” “My husband was a counselor in the 80’s.” Do you have stories and pictures? Email them to us. We have a list of campers from 1992 to present and some di-rectors dating back to 1973. Ski Thing 2011 is January 28/29. Put on your calendar and watch for promotion.

Berea Christian Church, Russellville extends an invitation to join them in the 2010 Hayride. A mailing will go out to each church with registration forms and additional information. A post card will be sent to each Chi Rho and CYF camper that attended camp this year.

Plans are underway for Camp 2011. HELP wanted: If you are at least 21, and out of camp one whole year consider applying as Kum-Ba-Ya On-site Summer Staff. Two positions available – email us and we will forward an application.

If you counseled and your name is not on this list, please call Glori (or email) so I can update our records.
