Good Evening
You are all very welcome to our Annual Prize Giving. The Abbey schoolcommunity gathers tonight to celebrate the many outstandingsuccesses of the past year in terms of academic achievements and alsoin terms of extracurricular activities. I would like to extend a warmwelcome to our graduates. It is great to see you back in the Abbey –many, many congratulations on all your achievements.
We also extend a special welcome back to the Abbey to ourdistinguished guest speaker tonight Mr Thomas McCall. Thomas is aproud Abbey man who has served the community of Newry andMourne with great distinction. He is approaching forty years of servicewith Newry and Mourne District Council and has given great leadershipin his role as Chief Executive over the last fourteen years. This work washonoured by the award of an OBE in 2011. We are delighted that he hasaccepted our invitation to speak tonight.
On behalf of the Board of Governors I offer our thanks and appreciationto all associated with tonight’s celebration, past pupils, parents, staff andstudents.
I wish to thank in a particular way the parents of all the studentsgathered tonight. I thank them for their continued support and loyalty.
I also wish to thank and congratulate the entire staff of the Abbey for alltheir best efforts, commitment and dedication.
In conclusion I hope that you all enjoy the presentation evening and Iinvite you to join us for light refreshments in the school canteen at theend of the evening.

Guest Speaker:Thomas McCall OBE
Clerk & Chief ExecutiveNewry and Mourne District Council
Thomas McCall was a student at the Abbey Christian Brothers’Grammar School from 1966 to 1973. In his final year he wasnominated as Joint Head Boy.
He has worked for Newry and Mourne District Council from 1974to date. During his career with the Council, Thomas has held anumber of key positions in the Finance Department, ThePersonnel Department and the Administration Department.
Before being appointed as Clerk and Chief Executive inDecember 1999 he was for several years the Council’s Directorof Administration. Thomas has had a long and distinguishedcareer in Local Government and has extensive experience inthe workings of Public Sector in Northern Ireland.
We are delighted to welcome him back to the Abbey ChristianBrothers’ Grammar School.

Biology Matt Kinsella Dr. M. Abrahamson Award
This award commemorates Mervyn Abrahamson who graduated from the Abbey in the early 1900s and who later became an eminent Physician in London.
Chemistry Matt Kinsella Prof. L Abrahamson Award
This award commemorates Leonard Abrahamson, a graduate from the Abbey in the early 1900s who later became President of the
Royal College of Physicians.
Physics Matt Kinsella Bro. M. K. Farrell Award
Brother M.K. Farrell was a popular and caring teacher in the Abbey in the 1960s and 70s. His work in the Physics Lab was matched
by his enthusiasm on the playing fields and he made a lasting impression in the lives of many Abbey students.
Drama Christopher Connor Bro. I. M. Liston Award
This award celebrates the distinguished teaching career of Brother I. Liston. For over 53 years in Newry Brother Liston conveyed to
thousands of Abbey students an awareness and appreciation of literature, poetry and dramatic expression.
Music Christopher Connor Augustus Toremans Award
Gus Toremans was an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher of music in the Abbey for almost a quarter of a century. His wonderful vocabulary and love of his subject brought an appreciation of all types of music to his students who will always remember him with admiration and joy.
Accounting Darren McGovern P. J. Kane Award
This award is dedicated to the memory of P.J. Kane a distinguished past teacher. P.J. introduced Economics to the Abbey and during
his teaching career he inspired both staff and pupils with his courage and dedication.
Business Studies Darren McGovern Bro. J. B. Hynes Award
This award commemorates the life of Brother J.B. Hynes. During his teaching career in the Abbey in the 1960s and 70s, he was a popular figure whose grasp of business affairs and fundraising was remarkable. His humorous approach to teaching colleagues and his pupils made him a popular friend to all who worked with him.
Irish Conor Hoey P. A. Crinion Award
Paddy Crinion was a distinguished member of the Abbey staff for three decades in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. A recognised expert in Latin he was equally gifted in Irish and during his time in Newry was involved in all aspects of Irish Culture and Language.
Spanish Conor Hoey Jack Cushnan Award
This award commemorates the work in the Abbey of Jack Cushnan who as Head of the Spanish Department in the 1960s and 70s saw his subject achieve new status in the school curriculum. When he left the school he became Headmaster of the British Council Schools in Cali, Columbia and Madrid, Spain.
French Kieran McKevitt Brendan Cassidy Award
Brendan Cassidy was a popular and dedicated teacher who served Abbey students for almost twenty years in the 1950s and 60s. As Head of the French Department he displayed a dedication and thoroughness to the teaching of his subject which was
inspirational to his students.
Psychology Kieran McKevitt Bro. W. O. Murphy Award
Bro. W. O. Murphy was a committed and outstanding educator. He was Vice Principal of the Abbey during the 70’s and 80’s.
He had a long, distinguished career in the school and loved teaching Irish.
Art & Design Colin Rice Bro. T. F. Beausang Award
Brother Beausang had perhaps the longest period of service in the Newry school where his love of Language and Art widened the minds of generations of Abbey students and his creative talents acted as a spur to literally thousands of students who benefited
from his teaching.
English Language Colin Rice Bro. Rehill Award
This award is dedicated to the work of a Christian Brother and former Headmaster of the Abbey. He was known for giving generously of his time and talent for the benefit of all the pupils in the school

Subject Pupils Award
Mathematics Darren Brady P. A. Sweeney Award
The name of Paddy Sweeney was synonymous with the teaching of Mathematics in the Abbey in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. He took such great enjoyment in solving problems and so conveyed this to his students that many were inspired to follow his footsteps.
English Literature Paul McCabe Bro. T. L Magee Award
Brother T. L. Magee will always be remembered in the Abbey as an excellent Headmaster and as an inspirational teacher of English. A gentle Kerryman he was as big in heart as in stature.
RE John McKevitt Bro. W. A. Byrne Award
Brother W.A. Byrne is one of those Abbey legends, a man of rare vivacity and enthusiasm. During his prolonged period of service in the school he was a shining example of the religious calling of Brother Edmund Rice. His attention to the disadvantaged in society and especially to the African Foreign Missions was unequalled.
Construction Conal Gallagher / Bro J. C. McDermott Award Paul Hearty
This award is named after a popular Christian Brother who taught in Abbey the 1970’s. It remembers the enthusiasm which he brought
to all aspects of school life including his time as Headmaster from 1975 to 1985.
Geography Mark Rafferty Bro. H. C. O’Hara Award
This award is dedicated to the memory of a gentle and caring teacher who after his return from a period of time in India served
the largest part of his teaching career in the Abbey where his many pupils recall him with warmth and devotion.
History Declan McShane Bro. P. W. Newell Award
Brother P.W. Newell was a legend in the Abbey where he served as a teacher and as a Headmaster during the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s. As an Historian, his attention to detail was remarkable and as Headmaster he was responsible for the planning and building of the Courtenay Hill school which was opened in 1966.
ICT Cathal Murphy Bro. D. W. Lynam Award
This award celebrates the work of an outstanding Mathematician who saw the beginning of the Computer revolution in the Abbey school during his term as Headmaster in the 1970s. His long period of service in Newry saw numerous students benefit greatly from his logical and enquiring mind.
Politics Conor Hayes Bro. D. L. O’Donnell Award
This award commemorates the life and work of Brother D.L. O'Donnell who had an abiding interest and knowledge of political affairs in Ireland. He had an exceptionally long connection with the Abbey Grammar School where he celebrated his centenary in 1998.
PE Studies Aaron Beattie Bro. P. C. McFarland Award
This award is dedicated to the memory of Brother P. McFarland and his enthusiastic approach to the teaching of English but more appropriately to his love of Gaelic games. He will long be remembered as a colossus of the Abbey playing fields where he displayed a drive for success that will be long remembered by legions of Abbey sportsmen.
Sociology James McGrane Bro J. D. McDonald Award
This award celebrates the work carried out by the last Christian Brother who served as Headmaster in the Abbey Grammar School. His period of office is memorable for the quality and extent of change he initiated. Many new ideas and subjects were introduced into the school during his time enriching the quality and variation of education offered to the students.
Technology RM Caolan Daly Bro. C. I. Gallagher AwardTechnology SC Paul McKeever
This award is dedicated to the long service in the Abbey of Brother C.I. Gallagher in the 1960’s and 1970’s. During his career both as a teacher and as Headmaster in the school he had a consuming passion for scientific and technological developments, a passion that he used to modernise the school for the benefit of his students.

Christina Fitzsimmons Trophy Conor HoeyThis award is presented to the pupil who achieved the highest marks across the range of Modern Languagesat ‘A’ Level. The trophy was donated by Mr. Tom Kelly. The award seeks to recognise the outstandingcontributions in the field of Modern Languages made by Mrs. Fitzsimmons during her teaching career in theAbbey 1968 – 1983 and is a fitting recognition of the high esteem held by her past pupils of the work doneby Mrs Fitzsimmons in and out of her classroom.
John Grant Memorial Award Aaron BeattieThis award is presented to the student who has made the biggest contribution to Gaelic Football during thelast school year and commemorates John Grant ‘a gentle giant’ and an outstanding member of the1974 MacRory Cup team who died suddenly and tragically following his apparent recovery from a seriouscar accident.
Pat Mooney Award Andrew McGivernThis award, donated by Mr Pat Mooney at the time of his retirement, seeks to recognise the studentwho during the last year made a major contribution to the overall life of the school.
