RNP-AR IN ABU DHABI – A PROJECT REPORT

FROM THE FIRST RNP-AR PROJECT IN THE

MIDDLE EAST

AGENDA

• Etihad Airways and Abu Dhabi

• Terminal Airspace efficiency as a local challenge

• The requirement of functioning ATM - better efficiency and capacity increase

ETIHAD AIRWAYS TODAY

17,600 employees

142 nationalities

98 aircraft

220+ firm orders

106 direct

destinations

240+ flights per day

12.0 million

passengers

45 million

Euros net profit

World’s Leading Airline 5 times

in World Travel Awards

A CHALLENGING CLIMATE

• Economic and political instability

• Volatile oil prices

• Consolidation, larger competitors

• Overcapacity, yield compression

• Market access constraints

• Infrastructure limitations

• Taxes, charges and imposts

• Digital-age consumers

• Skills shortages

• Air Traffic capacity

We have evolved from a startup airline to a global aviation player with one hub

India, China, Far East, Africa, South

America

Rapid growth in emerging markets

Much slower growth in

established markets

Europe, North America

Traffic flows are changing

Emergence of Gulf hubs, at crossroads of new

routes

THE AIRLINE INDUSTRY IS CHANGING

GLOBAL MARKET DYNAMICS – AIR TRAFFIC IS DOUBLING EVERY 15 YEARS

DEMAND GROWTH - Air traffic demand growth is the a Challenge facing the industry

PASSENGER AIR TRAFFIC TO DOUBLE BY 2030 SOURCE: ICAO, AIRBUS GMF 2010

CARGO AIR TRAFFIC TO TRIPLE BY 2030 SOURCE: ICAO, AIRBUS GMF 2010

$8.3B

$16.7B

$4.0B $3.9B

Costs To Passengers Costs to Airlines

Impact on GDP Costs from Lost Demand

ECONOMIC COST OF DELAY - Economic cost of delay is enormous and will only get worse as traffic demand grows

ANNUAL COST OF US DELAYS 2010: $ 32.9B SOURCE: FAA NEXTOR DELAY IMPACT STUDY 2010

COST PER EVERY MINUTE OF DELAY: $102 SOURCE: SOURCE: EUROCONTROL WESTMINSTER COST OF DELAY STUDY

ENVIRONMENTAL COST OF DELAY- Carbon footprint of aviation growing with demand while environmental pressures increase

CARBON REDUCTIONS REQUIRE EFFICIENCIES SOURCE: IATA PATHWAY TO CARBON NEUTRAL AVIATION 2010

EMISSIONS REDUCED 50% BY 2050 SOURCE: ICAO ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT 2010

The requirement of functioning ATM – better efficiency and capacity increase

CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT IN PBN IN ABU DHABI

• First RNP-AR approach flown into Abu Dhabi International on 6 MAR 2012

• RNP-AR approaches in daily use by 16 Operators

• Continual improvement of procedures

• Flexible use of airspace and real time coordination with military for aircraft inbound via M318 - ATUDO

BENEFITS OF RNP-AR IN ABU DHABI

LOWER FUEL BURN Less distance to Fly (8NM per flight)

Better Vertical Profile Fully Managed Descent

SAFETY Can potentially remove Circle to Land

Better Energy Management Fully Managed Approach

IMPROVED ACCESS TO AIRPORT Lower Minima

Less Diversions and Cancellations NPA on both sides

MIXED MODE SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTED

LINKED PROCEDURES

STRUCTURED DECISION POINTS

• Mixed mode operations (both ILS and RNP-AR) successfully accomplished through procedure design and controller training

• About 65% of aircraft requesting RNP-AR are issued approach

• Resulting in 40% reduced radio transmissions, stabilized flight paths, fuel savings

CHALLENGES IN DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS

• Collaboration ANSP and Pilots – both parties do not work fully integrated. Still relatively high number of rejected approaches after two years

• Procedure Design – “housekeeping” and improving the procedure is a continuous task and need special focus

• Standardization – not all ATCOs are confident to approve the approach. Different training standards have impact on operations

• Best equipped, best served – no clear policy defined for aircraft not capable to fly RNP-AR lead to interruptions in RNP “mass production”

Thank you
