Thus began the unlikely relationship of Christ UMC in Mobile and the UMC of the Ivory Coast. In 2013, we sponsored the first ILI conference in the Ivory Coast. Our goal was to equip the 28 participants with disciple-making tools that they would share in their sphere of influence. Little did we know that the first 28 participants were all leaders in the United Methodist Church. These leaders multiplied the training from the conference by sharing it with over 365 people. In 2014, we sponsored our second ILI conference with another 28 leaders, all young leaders in the church, who took the same training and shared with over 500 people. Our relationship with the people of the Ivory Coast continued to grow. In the spring of 2014, CUMC hosted Bishop Boni of the Ivory Coast. This incredible leader came to thank Christ UMC for our support as he inspired us to continue following the call of Christ. “Make disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world!” He shared with us his goal that United Methodists in the Ivory Coast would have a church in every village in the south and every town in the north. We were blessed to have Jean Claude, a church-planting missionary from the Ivory Coast, come and speak to us and share his vision in August of 2014. He plants new churches and trains new leaders. After prayer and discussion, Christ UMC chose to partner with him by pledging monthly financial support. Now the NEXT STEP! Jean Claude has identified a village, Gnangoussou (Youngoso), where there has been very little gospel witness. The majority of the 2,000 residents are members of an African religion where an elder of the people serves as their prophet. This elder recently passed away, leaving the door wide open for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This village has no clean water, no school and no medical facility. A local missionary, Brother Arthur, has been serving a small Methodist church there. We have the opportunity to partner with Jean Claude in the transformation of Gnangoussou! We believe that if the village is provided clean water through a new well, a church building for worship and education, and told the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the Jesus Video, we can play a large part in the transformation of this village. Together, we can bring hope. Together, we can bring better living conditions and show others the way to eternal life in Jesus Christ. It will take all of us to make the Next Step together! Plans are in progress as to how and when, through the grace of God, we can be partners in the transformation of the village of Gnangoussou. Our next step is to pray daily for the people of Gnangoussou, that their hearts will be open to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. What does God want me to do? I remember wrestling with that question following my graduation from college. I knew God had called me into ministry, but I needed a job. As I sat down with my pastor, I never will forget his words, “Jim, just take the next step.” If you think about it, that is how God leads us - one step at a time. God told Moses to bring the Israelites out of Egypt and out of slavery. One step at a time!

In 2012 at the General Conference of United Methodists, there was a call from the UMC in Africa to help them with discipleship. Pastor Jeff called Christ UMC to begin to pray and think about how we could develop relationships with our brothers and sisters in Africa. At the same time, the International Leadership Institute (ILI) became an approved agency of the United Methodist church for discipleship. In what seemed to be a holy moment, Julia Crim of ILI contacted Christ UMC. She asked if we would consider partnering with ILI and the United Methodist Church of the Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire) by sponsoring a discipleship conference.

Jean Claude has identified a village, Gnangoussou (Youngoso), where therehas been very little gospel witness.

It will take all of us to make the Next Step together! Plans are in progress as to how and when, through the grace of God, we can be partners in the transformation of the village of Gnangoussou. Rob Blackwell, Church AdministratorNow that we have entered Year 3 of the Seven Year Plan, it’s a good time to review our goals and progress. The goal of the Seven Year Plan is to eliminate $7 million of debt in 7 years, thereby giving us the resources and flexibility to more freely and effectively answer God’s call on our church. Here is a review of the core components with a few comments:• Intentional Emphasis on Spiritual Development and Tithing: Our emphasis on

spiritual development and tithing has been, and will continue to be, mirrored in the FORWARD initiative. The Giving Ladder is an important part of this effort.

• Incorporating the Mortgage Payment in General Operating (GO): We are now paying all interest on our debt from the General Fund (operating budget), right on schedule. This means that all 7YP funds go to principal only.

• 2nd Mile Sundays: Our two 2nd Mile Sundays have been completed; there will be no 2nd Mile Sunday this year.

• Planned Giving: We will begin talking about this part of the 7YP later this year.• Capital Campaigns: The FORWARD initiative replaces the need for a traditional

capital campaign. It works hand-in-glove with the 7YP, allowing us to meet the 7YP debt repayment schedule while still funding the ministries and operation of the church. Remember, the FORWARD budget includes the 7YP planned principal repayment (an additional $1.15 million in 2015). See the thermometer chart each month to track our progress. Note that we met our 2014 goal - Thanks be to God!

A blAnk pAGeAs we begin a new year (can you believe it’s 2015?), it’s like starting over again with a beautiful new, clean, blank page! The opportunity to set some new priorities and goals for the new year is available to us all. I encourage you to let your personal spiritual growth be a major goal for 2015. Stay connected to your Christ UMC family. Make worship

attendance, prayer, small group involvement, and giving of yourself to others major goals. Start some healthy habits and be committed to staying the course. January 1st is the first day of the rest of our lives—let’s make good choices!

The last two months of 2014 were certainly eventful in the life of Christ UMC! • We had a wonderful FORWARD initiative, in which we received pledges and

commitments of 10.6 million toward our two year goal of 11 million.

• We made a major decision to sell our corner Crossroads property to CVS for $2.35 million based on a 98% vote in favor at the church conference.

• $2,000,000 from the sale will be applied to principal debt.

We had a wonderful Advent season with spectacular music by our adult, youth and children’s choirs! We finished the year strong financially, and we also paid 100% of our conference apportionments for 2014. Let’s begin 2015 on strong financial footing as well. Thank you for your faithfulness as we press forward into God’s exciting future!

Adult Bible Studyopportunities

WednesdAy studiesn Bible Study with Pastor BobbyThe wilderness Journey | Begins wednesday, January 14 | 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. | Room A-209 | We all have “wilderness” times in our lives. Times of loneliness, despair, illness, depression, desertion and more. Learn from Pastor Bobby Williams as he brings to life Biblical characters who have also experienced the wilderness in their lives. Characters like Jacob, Elijah, Hosea and even Jesus.

n Balanced By Andy StanleyBegins wednesday, January 21 | 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. | Room A-204 | Led by Sandra Dunaway, a professional finance counselor. Are the arguments in your home often about money? Do you have trouble disciplining yourself with your resources? Can you be unbalanced financially and still be a devoted follower of Christ? What does it even mean to be financially balanced? In this 6-part study, you’ll be challenged to examine what you really believe about finances and faith:

n What does the Bible say about money?

n Can you survive without debt?

n Are you content with what you have?

n Are you giving God your leftovers?

This study is filled with insightful perspectives and practical exercises to build a biblical foundation for your finances. The workbook with DVD will be available at the first meeting with prior registration for a cost of $20. Couples only need one book.

WeekdAy studiesn The Power of God’s names by Tony Evans | Begins Tuesday, January 69:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. | Room A-206 | A ladies study | Led by Brenda Ragland | Learn more about the identity of God by understanding the context in which each of His names is used in Scripture. Workbooks available at first meeting with prior registration for a cost of $12. Child care available with prior registration.

n Mom’s Bible Study: A Mother’s Legacy by Jeanne Hendrick | Begins wednesday, January 7 | 9:30 a.m. | Parlor | Learn a mother’s legacy through a study of ten special women from the Word of God. Each lesson focuses on struggles that are as real today as they were centuries ago. You’ll also hear from contemporary mothers like author Jeanne Hendrick and learn ways to apply the practical truths you acquire. Brief enough to fit into your busy, and often unpredictable schedule, yet deep enough to really make a difference, A Mother’s Legacy lends a helping hand, because being a mother can be the most influential job there is. Cost of book is $11 available at first class meeting. Child care is available.

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever

you did for one of the least of these brothers

and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” Matthew 25:40.

Aren’t you glad Jesus was clear when He said how we

should help and treat one another? The Parable of the

Sheep and the Goats has always been one of my favorite

lessons from the Bible. It is our actions and our lack of

actions to one another that is so important. We have to

remember that we are responsible for helping others, and

as parents, to teach our children. My mother always told

us two things about serving. One of the main reasons we

are here is to help one another, and charity begins in our

own back yard. Join us this year as we teach the children

how to serve others. Every month, we will have a Family

Night and Family Service Day, and we encourage you to

serve! In Christ,

When you sleep, your heavenly Father watches over you with love. Sleep is God’s gift; to accept that gift is an act of trust. He restores your body and energy through sleep.

One of the hidden triggers to over-eating is lack of rest. When we’re overtired, we often try to boost our energy with caffeine or sugar or carbs, which ultimately leaves us more tired than before.

Trusting God enough to sleep builds your faith. Why does sleep require trust? Because we tend to overload our schedules and think that we don’t have time to get the proper amount of sleep.

Jesus relaxed, and He never felt guilty about it. Even God took a day off after Creation. Who are we to think we’re too busy to get the proper rest?

A neW orGAn for christ umcBy Ralph GudemanThis past summer, we announced the establishment of a fund to replace the Sanctuary organ which has served our congregation well for nearly 35 years. During this span of time, the organ, which was moved from the original Sanctuary, has endured both lightning strikes and power surges which have weakened and compromised nearly all of its electrical components. These events, coupled with the aging process, are causing the organ to both malfunction and fail on an intermittent and increasingly frequent basis. Bob, our organist, has been able to “coax” the organ along, but the time has come to replace it with a new instrument that will serve future generations of worshipers at Christ United Methodist Church with the same reliability and excellence that we have enjoyed for many years. The current organ was built during the era when the 8-track cartridge tape was still popular and cassette tapes were just being introduced. We were typing on electric typewriters and early word processors, and black and white televisions were still being widely sold in stores across America! Since then, technology has changed significantly and digital church organs today replicate authentic pipe organs with outstanding realism and warmth. They support all types of music with great tonal variety and versatility. The organs we are considering will not only support traditional hymnody and choral music, but all genres of contemporary music as well. The sound capabilities will essentially be limitless and designed to grow with the music program over the years. Look for more information in the coming months or contact me at 251.342.0462 ext. 221 or [email protected].

The STephen miniSTry can helpDid you ever want to talk to someone but felt no one really wanted to listen? Stephen Ministers

are trained to listen well. They will listen to you and respond lovingly and non-judgmentally. They are not there to tell you what you should or should not do. If you need

someone who will really listen to you as you work through a problem, you may want to consider a Stephen Minister.
