Collect
Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all
things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of
lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided
and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under
his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Jeremiah 23:1-6
Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my
pasture! says the LORD. Therefore thus says the LORD, the
God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my
people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven
them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend
to you for your evil doings, says the LORD. Then I myself will
gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I
have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and
they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds
over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any
longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the
LORD. The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I
will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign
as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and
righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and
Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will
be called: "The LORD is our righteousness."
Psalm 46
1 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved,
and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea;
3 Though its waters rage and foam,
and though the mountains tremble at its tumult.
3
4 The LORD of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
5 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
6 God is in the midst of her;
she shall not be overthrown;
God shall help her at the break of day.
7 The nations make much ado, and the kingdoms are shaken;
God has spoken, and the earth shall melt away.
8 The LORD of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
9 Come now and look upon the works of the LORD,
what awesome things he has done on earth.
10 It is he who makes war to cease in all the world;
he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear,
and burns the shields with fire.
11 "Be still, then, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations;
I will be exalted in the earth."
12 The LORD of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
Colossians 1:11-20
May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from
his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure
everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the
Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the
saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of
darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved
Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He
is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation;
for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created,
things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or
rulers or powers-- all things have been created through him and
for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things
hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the
beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come
4
to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of
God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to
reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven,
by making peace through the blood of his cross.
Luke 23:33-43
When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they
crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and
one on his left. Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they
do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots to divide
his clothing. The people stood by, watching Jesus on the cross;
but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let
him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!"
The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him
sour wine, and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save
yourself!" There was also an inscription over him, "This is the
King of the Jews." One of the criminals who were hanged there
kept deriding him and saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save
yourself and us!" But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you
not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of
condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly,
for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man
has done nothing wrong." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me
when you come into your kingdom." He replied, "Truly I tell
you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

All are welcome to receive Holy Communion with us. Our tradition is to
receive both bread and wine, sharing in the common cup. Please assist the
chalice bearer by guiding the cup to your lips. You may also intinct by
dipping the wafer into the chalice. You may wish to receive the bread
only. Receiving the bread only is a valid and acceptable way to share in
Holy Communion. After consuming the wafer, simply cross your arms
over your chest to indicate that you do not wish to receive the wine.
Gluten-free wafers are available on request from the communion minister.
If you are feeling sick, please refrain from receiving the wine and be
mindful of those near you when passing the peace or shaking hands as
you enter and exit the church.

ST. JOHN’S CHRISTMAS GIFT DRIVE
Please return all gifts and books by December 7. The annual Christmas Gift Drive is here! As in past years, we are partnering
with Advocates for Justice and Education, Bishop Walker School, Southeast
White House, and St. John’s Community Services to bring joy to children in
need this holiday season. Each child has provided a wish list of toys, books, or
clothes that he or she is hoping to find underneath the Christmas tree this year.
The “wishes” are captured on angels hanging on the angel tree in the Parish
House entryway. Please consider taking an angel from the tree and filling a
child’s Christmas wish. The deadline for returning unwrapped gifts is
Wednesday, December 7. Gift distribution will begin on Monday, December
12, so it is important that all gifts are dropped off on time. All of the Bishop
Walker School angels are for books. For your convenience, we have created
online book lists at www.amazon.com through which you can purchase the
requested books and ship them directly to St. John’s (instructions below).
Instructions for Amazon.com book lists:
From the Amazon home page, select “Lists” and then “Find a List or
Registry” (top right of the screen)
Search for “St. John’s Church-DC”
Click on your child’s grade level (left side of the screen)
Select the books you would like to purchase; proceed to checkout
To ship directly to St. John’s, select “Rev. Andrew Olivo” from the shipping
address options, then select the “Gift Receipt” option and enter the name of
your child in the “Gift Message” box
You can also help by joining us to wrap the gifts on Saturday, December 10.
Join us for a fun-filled morning wrapping all of the donated gifts—it’s always a
great time! If you have questions, please contact Jeff Hantson at
[email protected] or Katie Hantson at
[email protected]. Thank you in advance for your generosity this
holiday season!

TWO EASY WAYS TO HELP OTHERS
• The empty casserole pans in the Parish House are waiting to be filled with food
for our partnership with So Others Might Eat (S.O.M.E.). St. John’s is
committed to sending food once a month to S.O.M.E. to be served in a meal
program for homeless and low-income persons in D.C. Participation is easy
and flexible! Pick up an empty casserole pan in the Parish House, fill it with a
casserole, and drop it off in the freezer near the dining room soda machine. A
parishioner picks up all the casseroles once a month and drops them off at the
meal site.
• When you travel, bring back unopened toiletry items for homeless
shelters. Place them in the basket in the connector between the Church and the
Parish House.
PASTORAL CARE AT ST. JOHN’S CHURCH
Praying for the sick and those in need is an important part of our life together.
We invite you to add yourself, family, or friends to the parish prayer list. Other
than birthdays, anniversaries, and deaths, names added to the prayer list will
appear for four consecutive weeks. If you would like the name to be on the
prayer list for a shorter or longer period of time, please let us know. We are
going to begin listing in parentheses the name of the person requesting prayers
for family and friends who are not members of the congregation. To add a
name to the prayer list, please contact the Rev. Andy Olivo at
FLOWER DELIVERIES
Help brighten the day of parishioners who can’t be with us by taking them

information. Thank you for checking to see if a delivery address is convenient
for you.

NEW OUTREACH COMMITTEE MINISTRY –
THE OLIVE OIL MINISTRY
St. John’s is partnering with the Olive Oil Ministry to provide the
opportunity to purchase fair trade olive to support Palestinian farmers and
the Tent of Nations. The Olive Oil Ministry is an all-volunteer
ecumenical project sponsored by the Middle East Committee of
Westmoreland Congregational United Church of Christ of Bethesda in
partnership with 18 other congregations in the Washington area.
Earnings from the sale of Canaan Fair Trade Products support the Tent of
Nations, an organic farm near Bethlehem that seeks to build bridges
between Jewish and Muslim communities. Purchase of the olive oil raises
awareness of the challenges facing Palestinian farmers and creates a
market for Palestinian products.
The Olive Oil Tasting: Sunday, November 20
To order, fill out the form below and return with a check made out to
WCUCC to the Outreach mailbox in the Parish Hall front office. We will
take orders through Sunday, December 4. Purchases will be distributed
after both services on Sunday, December 11 and Sunday, December 18.
For questions about ordering, distribution, or for more information
about the ministry and the organization which it supports, contact
Preston Cherouny at [email protected] or Jessica Sanchez at

IF YOU ARE VISITING a warm welcome to St. John’s.
We are delighted to have you worship with us. Please let us know who
you are and how we can best serve you by filling out a “Welcome”
card and leaving it in the offering plate or with an usher or greeter, and
joining us for the coffee hour following the service.
We welcome families with young children at our worship services.
Children’s Worship Bulletins are available from the ushers as you
enter the nave. For parishioners and visitors alike, nursery care for
children under age three is provided on Sunday from 8:15 a.m. to
2:00 p.m. The nursery is located next to the elevator on the lower
level of the Parish House. Take the elevator or stairs to the basement.
We also offer Church School at 10:45 a.m. for children and youth
from age three through tenth grade on the second floor of the Parish
House.
All persons, including children, are invited to take part in the Holy
Eucharist. Parents may decide if their children receive the bread
and/or wine. Children may instead signal their desire to be blessed by
the priest at the altar by crossing their arms across their chest.
